Crank Seal Problems
« on: February 15, 2012, 08:11:54 pm »
Ok, need some advise, installing a new crank seal, the outer rim of the seal is rubberized. There is a groove in the bore where the seal is to be fitted, looks like damage from levering old seal out, groove is about .5 - .75 mm deep.

Question is do I fit seal with some kind of sealant around the outside to fill in the groove, if so what do you recommend, or do I install it and hope the rubberized outer rim will take up the groove.

Any advise/opinions greatly appreciated.

Best to do a leak test after you build the motor to check the seals and everything else is tight. Pressurize to 6 psi or so and see if it holds pressure for several minutes. You will need to make up plugs and seals for the
exhaust and intake so you can pressurize and monitor the pressure. Well worth it - good practice for any engine rebuild. Peace of mind.

I don't see what harm using some sealant will do to the crank seal. Another option is Belzona or liquid metal to fill the groove and then machine or sand back to smooth. If its under the seal it should be fine. Good luck.

Use one of the "remain soft" type sealants like LOCTITE Master Gasket 518 around the outer rim of the seal. It will help fill any gaps along with the rubberized outer rim.
