PE400 original LH grip
« on: September 09, 2010, 07:00:58 PM »
I purchased an "original" LH grip from suzuki Aus for a 1980 pe400 and they have sent me a similar grip but not original (part no 57211-27C00 . I have since been informed that is all suz Aus can supply as they dont carry the original gear and would have to get it from the states.

I found the part number i need from the schematics on bike bandit which is part# 1100342 (3322-001) however to get it from Bike Bandit in the states they have a minimum postage of $111.00...

Can anyone inform me where I can get the part I need in Aus or elsewhere but at a fair postage rate.

actual part # is     57211- 40200         and superceeded to   57211-27COO ( which means it is from another stock bin )

Ray might have the part ......but you will be parting with some serious dollars also  ;)

Ha, the original left grip is impossible to find. If you find one then let me know! The grip that superceeds it is very very similar and they are still the basic same waffle pattern, and if your not doing a concourse restoration then this would be fine for most people. The original NLA grips are not very good anyway, the ribs are not very high or cushioning. The new grips are better. From memory the newer superceded grip is whats fitted to some newer DR/RM models.

The problem is I put in a big order to bike bandit about a month ago and got a new throttle assembly that came with an original brand new grip but didnt include the left side. I know purchase the LH side from Aus suz and they dont match...

Yeah i had the same prob. What you have to do is remove the grip from the throttle tube. its glued on but yes it can be done. Then you need to buy the matching newer grip.......
Now the only thing is that i reckon when ever you buy a RH grip off one of these models that it probably comes on the tube. i dont know if suzuki sell all the right grips on the tubes for all these models? I think it may be hard to get one off the tube with out damaging it to put it on the PE tube. I really think you might have to get a set of $20 aftermarket OEM replica grips. The common XR pattern is very similar to the new suzuki pattern, still the basic old school waffel. if you dont mind aftermarket grips with brand names on them then the Scott Hurricane grips are a good pattern and quite popular. Also Oury are very good. You should find allsorts on ebay or oterwise just go to your local bike shop, they can help with grips. As others have said, even if you do find a NOS left grip, its probably gonna be dry/hard/perished or very expensive and for the price of that one grip you could get 5 or more pairs of aftermarket grips. The grip would be too expensive and if you havent got barkbusters on, the first time you tip the bike over the end of the grip will get damaged and there goes your mega dollar left grip! I its a $20 aftermarket set, thats not going to matter so much.

By the way, ive been trying to get the original grip left grip for 7 years for a resto and i would not be surprised if it was discontinued long before 2003.

I will only run original grips on one of my PE's you can get much better feeling grips than stockers anyway some Scotts or alike that still have a vintage look.

http://www.motoduro.co.uk/include/suzuki15.php

My PE400x has a quick pull throttle and scott grips that don't look out of place if you keep them black. :)

Again, if you need something like that...well there is just no way in hell it can really cost $111.00 to ship a grip. I can help if you can not get it in oz. I have offered this several times, but was only taken up on it once-by Glen, btw, you were so generous, the wife and I love the sweatshirts still.
I realize that I am in Texas, so big parts should go through the west coast of US. All I am saying is, I would be honored to help out any VMX brothers-and do not expect to stick you with bullshit cost to handle, hell send me a cool Oz vmx kind of decal and I am floored. We are not all attending tea parties and butt forking our underage cousins while watching nascrap. I have failed to locate some nos items requested, and reget that, but am always willing to send along from one of those sellers who is not only sickly nationalisitc, but fails to remember how Australia has fought side by side with the US in just about every major conflict since.. well you get the point.

Be well, James

James,
Thanks for the kind offer. With respect to the grip I took previous advice and got a complete aftermarket set.

I may have lived a sheltered life, but your the first American I have met in my 35 years that seems to be on the same wave length as us ozzies...

Remember the old trick of putting a 2 cent piece in the end of the bar then the grip so when you drop the bike it wouldn't chew the end off the grip?  ;D
