Does powder coat harden up or is it as hard as it ever gets when the job is done?

Thanks,  I'm getting some car alloy wheels done a mat grey and the tyre fitter asked because he said if it hardens like ordinary paint we will wait a while before fitting the tyres up

Once cooled I can pull bits out of the oven and hit them with a rubber mallet if necessary.
Just make sure your powder coater doesn't put it on too thick as it may chip easier

You should ask your tyre fitter to put rim savers in when fitting, they are like a plastic lip that covers the edge of the rim but they are slippery to allow the tyre to pass over it and removed before inflating.

Powder coating is applied via electrostatic gun & will generally be around the 60 - 100 microns in thickness. Think of it as a plastic coating which is applied as a dry powder & fused/melted in an oven generally 30 mins at around 200 - 230 C.

There are various hybrid powder coats around but the main one used will be polyester. Once cured it will be as hard as it will ever get & is always vulnerable to chipping dut to the film thickness & it is a coating always under stress (glass like).

For best performance, the substrate metal should be shot blasted to clean & roughen the surface as a good key base, followed by a suitable chemical cleaning/pre-treatment to help the powder bond better.

No, it's always a cry-baby.

I'm here all week. Try the steak.

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Thanks for the answers, can now ask the powder coater what he uses and ask if he keeps it to a thin coat
