Husqvarna with Reverse Gear
« on: August 16, 2009, 05:09:22 pm »
WHY? Does my 76 cr250 have reverse ? checked all the brochures it wasn`t a option. ;) It`s done it maybe 6 times in 3 years of racing. Happened first pre 78 race of the Nationals and I have witnesses. I dont notice any difference in the way the engine is running and I just have pull clutch and retry 2 maybe 3 times and she`s all good. Very Strange?
Couple of CR`s

Did it back fire before it happened?
I had a TC80 Suzuki in the late 60's that several A grade Short Circuit guys loved to push start it in reverse and see who could ride it the fastest.
This usually happened late in the day at clubkarna's, always after a few bevvy's of course and was very funny.

Snowy,
Talk to Pete,
He said it is a gearbox issue, something to do with the clutch running in the opposite direction to the engine and causing the out put shaft to run backwards,
gearbox needs to be stripped and rebuilt ;D

I had a 250 that did that once..it is an ignition timing problem...timing set too close to TDC or the flywheel key is broken..and when you start it the engine runs backwards...let the clutch out and hey presto reverse..!! Check the timing first.. :)

Did it get wet? I had a YZ125C go into reverse after I dropped it in a creek.
Pulled it out and when it re-started it ran really rough - and went backwards when clicked into gear.
Kept on trying and it would only go backwards.

I gave it to the local bike shop and all they did was ride it around for an hour trying to get it to go backwards!
So they did nothing. I can only assume it dried out - and got better! :D
"Whadaya mean it's too loud?! It's a f*ckin' race bike!! That pipe makes it go louder - and look faster!!"

I'd have tho't ign timing too, only the other direction - too much advance causing it to backfire (on startup or at idle) & counter-rotate.

One thing you didnt mention is that there is no backfire.
Isn't there a Husky ad that says something about this?
Goes something like " Husky's run away from the competition ! "
Yeah, running back out the start area and into the van!
Maybe the bike was once part of a circus act?  ;D

I know this will sound really stupid but have you replaced the plug. I once hade a pump motor giving me "ingnition proplems". Everyone swore it was a sheared flywheel key. Giving a wrong ing timing. After going through every ign part despit the plug looking fine with great spark I replaced that. Fixed problem. All we came up with was it was acting as a cap & holding charge for a short time & delaying its bang.
