Have you considered a ceramic coating, one of which is much like nickel. Just a thought

I just contacted PipeKingRepairs on Facebook.  On my YZ125K original pipe, he would clean it, polish it, remove all the dings and dents, re-weld the pipe and blue all the welds.  $150 which i think is a good price for all the effort and work that would go into turning your old hard to get original or rare pipe like new again.

thanks Alex - am going to drop the pipe down to him over the weekend - unfortunately for me we are at opposite ends of Perth  ;D
