Hey Brett,
What model KLX and where are you located?

The crank is also the same as the KL250 from the same era. The early 250 road bike was the same too, so long as it is not the leccy start model. The left crank bearing is replaceable too, despite what the manuals say !
72mm pistons are available in the U.S. I use MTC pistons in Florida. There is a guy on ebay selling them. He is super reliable and reasonable too. It takes only a few days for him to ship to the UK. The link below is my supplier Joe Hooper.

If you message him he will sell you just one piston kit. The valve cut outs work perfect for the KLX. The compression goes up a bit too.

Thanx for the info Grouty.
I have a kz/road bike engine , not sure what year it is but the crank is different in two aspects ie; the bearing on the cam drive side has a larger id and the shaft on the clutch drive side has a keyway as opposed to a spline on the klx. This engine doesn't have a lecky start but does have a balance shaft. Cheers. Brett

Should have also said the later balancer shaft motors are different. You may be able to use the crank cheeks and pin from the later engine, and your crank stubs (if they are still good) from your blown up one.

Have you seen this?

RH is to the same models
Part # = 13037-5002
Part Description = CRANKSHAFT,LH
Model Count = 5
KLX250-A1 79 250 KLX250 OFF ROAD
KLX250-A2 80 250 KLX250 OFF ROAD
KL250-A1 78 250 KL250 DUAL PURPOSE
KL250-A1A 78 250 KL250 DUAL PURPOSE

The later KLX doesn't come in in my parts list but the crankcase is completely different to the earlier versions
