88's in Oz had conventional forks, and the Oz 89's had the 43mm USD's (as mine has above).

Some Pro's reckon the 46mm conventionals (found on 1989 US models) are far superior. You can grab a set and legally fit them.
Ando has an import bike with them on.

I've ridden both and I havent really noticed - but I am just a hacker.

One other difference is the rear shock on the 89 has a fork lower end, whereas the 88's have an eye end bearing.

Oh and the tank is different on the 89's too... it sits lower.

There could be other changes - but I am not really sure. Actually I think the stator is different from memory.....

Other than that mate - just BNG ... lol

 :)

Minor detail but my 88 had insert bushes in the sub frame, bitch of a set up as they would seize and spin and then the side covers were permanently fixed..... apart from that mine went well

89 also has a smoother motor and a twin piston front brake.
If you want to get into train-spotter territory, the rear caliper is different and the 88 rear caliper guard mounts to the swingarm rather than the caliper itself.

I'm slower than Hardo, but I hate the 89 forks - big spike in the midstroke when you least want it.
The 88 forks are lovely once they're set up: Smooth action, fork seals last, and no dramas with the upper alloy tubes corroding. With some Gold Valves in them, they are 99% as good as the best forks I've ever used.
The US-spec 89 forks are even better - bigger cartridge and better base valve design mean there's less need for GoldValves.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.
