I am restoring a SC500 . It has a YZ 490 ignition on it , I have been told it is supposed to make them less light switch like and better power. Might be a option for you
If in doubt ,WIND IT OUT

Hi, by memory--[used to work for a yam dealer a lifetime ago] SR500 Yams are 12volt cdi or tci so just saying be careful what you buy. If it's the original system it'll only have the trigger coil only down the bottom, i think it's sitting outboard of the flywheel activated by a raised strip on the flywheel. XT/TT250's are cdi & don't get me started on 'that'--they used to stuff the box & stay fully retarded [barely run--idled good lol], had one [still got it] guy bought to me with the exact symptoms--cdi box i said, so to prove a point before spending lots on a box i advanced the flywheel & did it up bloody tight minus the key which helped but didn't fix it and found [after head scratching] that the inlet cam lobe had all bit disappeared [i mean gonnne]. Went good after that lol. Sorry--getting off track again.

no sr500 have their own cdi charge and pulser coils and need no battery for sparks. they also have a 3 phrase alternator for running lights etc but that doesn't power up the ignition system ;)

sorry, cocked that one up & should have 'google imaged' the stator first. Knew they were 12volt for lights & charging, real good big headlight too.

actually i know what got me thinking along those lines, the words 'ignitor unit' makes me think battery powered rather than stator coil powered for some reason, probably because i've had to replace a crook ignitor box on my old 'honda vigor' car.--anyway, back to me beer.

Honda;s had 12v powered up cdi's on e/start xl600rmg and 650 dominators, they had an inverter in them to step up the voltage from 12v dc to the voltage cdi systems run at.
