I have a 83 125 which is probably the fastest EVO 125 I've owned ofcoyrse its a Husqvarna not a Keep Taking your Money.

dennis I thought that you arent allowed any more bikes

Anyway what regulations do I need to stick to for the pre 85 class

can I add later model bike parts to my pre 85 such as late 80's brakes

do I need a front sproket cover on my 83

Yes you need a sprocket cover. Doesn't have to be the original one, just something to stop fingers getting caught.

No you can't fit post-85 bits legally. Because the pre-85 class isn't defined in the manual (yet), the exact rules depend on the club running the event.
Generally speaking, everyone looks at the VMX regs that are in the manual (pre-75, pre-78 etc) and converts them to suit the pre-85 bikes. This means that shocks, ignitions, controls (levers, bars etc), pipe/muffler, engine internals and cosmetics are free, but everything else needs to be made before 1985, or be indentical to bits made before 1985.

In reality, minor transgressions are usually over-looked. Unless you're particularly fast and/or obnoxious you'd be unlucky to get pulled up on having an 85 motor in your 83 bike (for example).

as i understand it, don't need a sprocket cover if distance from nearest tooth to frame is less than......some distance.  i think 30ml.  but most 80s plus bikes don't need them cause they needed to locate cogs near as poss to frame to keep the chain on all thru susp travel.  i'd be sure your rd (like my rd) don't have to have one.

The GCR's (or competion manual or whatever the hell it's called these days) spells out the specs for maximum clearance and whether a chain guard is required. Don't get tangled up in the additional requirements for PRIMARY drive covers though.

If you are going to tough it out and not run a chain guard make sure the law is on your side - you could drive a bloody long way only to be a flaggie !!!

I have a set of 40mm marzocchi forks and tripple clamps that came off a 82 mx 250 i think?   Very clean, with a few small spots on chrome, but not worth re-chroming for.
