REMOVING OLD CONTACT FROM FIBREGLASS TANK

I have a Frontera tank that I'm struggling to get some old contact off. It's brittle and hard as a cats head. I've had a little bit of luck laying a rag soaked with turps on the surface but its still hard work. I have now officially run out of fingernails and hope that someone out there can offer some advice. Thanks Jerry

Hey jerry we have a bit of luck with a product called Citraforce, they have just changed the formula in bulk but you may still be able to get a sprsy can of the old formula if anything will work it would be that stuff it will dsolve dry tar off the cabs of our trucks lust spray on leave and watch it run off then hose off dosn't seem to harm the paint work.... as always the new formula is a step backwards but oh well still works something to do with the cost of citrus.

G'day Jerry, i have found that CRC / WD40 takes off the gluey adhesive residue left after removal of things (like stickers), not sure if it will attack the old contact though. try it on a test patch.

have you tried a range of solvents (Metho, acetone etc) ?

like Chrisdespo mentioned, try the citric acid products (Orange Power brand "sticky spot and goo dissolver" from supermarkets is a good one) maybe try eucalyptus oil.

I've used Orange Power and another citric acid based product with great success. To remove stickers I use a hair dryer or a heat gun on low to warm and soften the sticker and glue. They come off in little time and the glue residue will quickly come off with a rag soaked in the citric stuff or even thinners or turps although thinners may remove some paint. Try Orange Power first.

Fingernail polish remover works well for the gooey stuff left behind.

I,ve done 2 frontera tanks .they are fibreglass so just get out the bloody electric sander and go to town on it. Then get yourself some car bog and give it a touch up. I have just finished the Gold Medal tank and the gold colour I bought in a pressure pack from CHEAP AUTO PARTS.  The colour is called CONTESSA GOLD. It,s a discontinued stock but get them to check on the computer for other stores that may still have it in stock, and you might get lucky like I did.  And don,t forget to get a can of clear finish.              Also I cross threaded the petcock thread on the tank today and I was friggen spewin,so I went down to the bolt shop and for $32 they gave me a complete self tapping and rethread kit complete with thread inserts. Drill it out, tap the Oversize thread, then screw in the thread insert back to standard size" Bloody Unreal".   Threw the tank back on and went for a ride around town and I just got back.

nice job.Hope car bog does not "pop" out with leaching from petrol fumes. Been there done that,then got trick boat epoxy 16yrs later perfect.

There is a Tank Tool Box on Ebay now. Also Peter Shoene sells them.  Another important thing I forgot to mention when refurbishing old fibreglass tanks is that you must do the inside of the tank as well by resealing it with epoxy . This might sound like a big job but it is actually quite easy. You just buy the 2 pack mix and pour it into the tank then just keep turning the tank over and over for a complete seal. This will ensure no fuel leaks as these old tanks get brittle inside and out, again Peter Shoene is the man to contact, regards lyle.
