Bought a KX 125 E 1986
« on: December 05, 2010, 09:22:21 AM »

Well i actually picked up 2 bikes, but I'll keep the discussions only about the kx here. From my experience as a bike mechanic years ago I know just how neglected motor cross bikes can be in especially 2 stroke bikes. I was actually surprised when I gave this bike a good clean and what sort of condition it was in.

The bike had been sitting in storage for years. I flush out the fuel tank (nearly spewed at the smell) and starting cleaning the carby up. I wished now that I took a picture of the before and after process.

I've stumbled on what has to be the greatest carby cleaner/carbon cleaning out there. It's made by three bond and it's called engine conditioner.

Anyway the bike fired up first kick and rides pretty well.

I'm not sure what my plans are for the bike yet, but i will start repairing the issues it has. Here is my list.

-Chain and sprockets
-Expansion chamber
-Front tyre
-Fork seals
-Front wheel bearings
-Front pads
-Change gear box oil
-Front rim (it has cracks near spokes)
-Front lever.

I did some research and that's how I worked out it's an 84. i was told that this was the first disc brake model front and rear, but from what i found it seems that it was the 82. I'm very new to the KX's so i don't mind being wrong or told.

I'll take some more pictures as the project goes along as i have many questions to ask. Here's a few to get started.

-Where can I find a decent online manual to download for free?
-Is this worth trying to keep original as possible?
-Would there be a market for this model or is it still to young?

I'll leave it at that for now.

Thanks for the info. i was going of the 10 digit in the vin number as per thread I found before. Cool I can do some more research now.

Looks like either the gear selector shaft or sprocket seal is leaking now. Self oiling chain system.

I wouldn't go molesting it for the sake of it.

There IS a market for it, but its about 10% the size of the pre-85 market. And like all bikes that are the oldest of their racing class they're less desirable than the later incarnations - they're a good bike but they're not a patch on (say) an 89 CR125.

It IS an 86, BTW - single down tube frame combined with "bottom linkage" rear suspension make it an 86.

If you want to sell it then let me know.
If you want to sell the disc protector, then please let me know!

I wasn't planning to molest it, but I was just thinking if I fitted a new tyre (example) that was exactly the same or had different tread and someone looks at it later and tells me it's worth more with the old original tyre.

PM send about the bike. As for the disc cover I would prefer to part with the whole bike warts and all.

I'm off back to the workshop and I'll take my camera for more pictures.

Stuff like original tyres are good because they show that the bike's done SFA work.
But they only directly add value when they're part of a really good/immaculate original bike.

Studdy, can you send me your number again please? The number you sent me belongs to an Asian guy who is most perplexed when I ask for you...

must be a 86 model ::)

Capitalisation was to show that I was confirming what you'd already said, and didn't think I was presenting any new info.

Yes I'm being a grave digger.

I'm keen to sell both the XR 250 and the KX125. Call me about either or both with a good offer and they/it is yours. i don't want to go through ebay if i can avoid. Pressed for time and coin at the moment.

They were a great motor. Had one in the day. The frames cracked badly near your left ancle. Rims tended to crack as well. Some good port work & a bigger carb they fly. Need to be on the boil.
