Spokes

Any clues on where I might be able to buy a repro/aftermarket set of spokes for a 1982 CR125? I need rear wheel set but would also buy a front set if I could find them

Where are you located? Do you have the old spokes?

John Titman or Ash's wheels will have the specs for them and make a set up no problems.
They're both in Bribane.

I've had mixed results from this mob in Thailand. My first two sets were perfect but my last set had the totally wrong spokes for my MX Yamaha rear. They fixed the problem but it was annoying and time consuming. Can't argue with the price though.

I'm in Brisbane also so what JohnnyO said. Titman is a wholesaler so you can go through your local bike shop and order them.

PCMax,

A few of us have been using a Sydney based plater to re-zinc or nickel plate the original spokes. They come up good with a bit of prep effort and at least you know what you've got holding your bum off the dirt...

A mate had after market locally made stainless spokes and all the heads snapped off his YZ250 D over a jump at one of our Heaven rounds. Pulled him up quick. ;D

Is there a strength difference between Chrome & Stainless aftermarket spokes? Or is it just rust resistance?
The link for the chrome spokes Firko put up are half the price of stainless from the US.
Who are the best to re do your original spokes as I won't find aftermarket for the Cagiva.

AJ,

Best place would depend where you live. We have been using Blue Chrome in Sydney and Pioneer Plating at Moorebank  9734 6609 (Tony).  Reasonable results and a reasonable price.

Thanks for all the replies. Replating is not really an option as several spokes snapped when I was initially trying to tighten them, a couple more snapped or required the assistance of a hacksaw when trying to remove them.

Firko, the ebay ones look OK have you fitted a set personally? I have sent the guy an email checking that they have the sizes for my CR as well as enquiring with John Titman in BNE.

Hussaberg Pete, I did see the result of Seano's rear wheel collapse didn't realise they were aftermarket. Can you PM me with the details of who made them/relaced the wheel (just so I don't happen to fall into the same trap)

Thanks again
Peter

Peter, have a look at the Yamaha back wheel of my Cheney on page 54 of the current isue of VMX. That's a set of Thai spokes in there. I've used them in two other bikes as well including my DT1 restoration. When they sent me the spokes for the Yamaha hub in the VMX photo they sent 36 spokes all the same length when in fact the wheel uses two different length spokes. They fixed the problem but it was a pain in the arse and it dragged out the final couple of weeks of the build causing me to not quite finish the bike in time for CD7.

Firko, had a similar problem with the Thai guy.
Bought a set of spokes from Thailand (on ebay) emailed him referring to the ebay lsiting and asked him if the spokes were for a 1982 CR125 I even specified the sizes I needed & the guy replied saying "yes 100% fit your bike" then he sends me a set of totally different sizes.
I emailed him and pointed out that I had gone to the trouble of telling him exactly what I wanted & he had then sent 54 spokes the wrong lenghts and 18 spokes the correct lenght but the wrong offset. He apologised and said he would send me another set (for free) when they arrived that set was still missing 18 190mm spokes for the back wheel, though I now had 36 230mm spokes (only needed 18)
.
I also discovered that ALL of the spokes he sent had a 90 degree offset and the 1982 CR has only 18 90 degree ones the rest are around 45 degree. This guy was advertising these spokes to fit a CR125/TL125 he really has absolutely no idea what he is selling.

Total waste of time but will be putting them on ebay soon to try to recover the $100 I paid for them.

Anyhow the wheels are now at Chivos at Granville its going to cost a bit more but at least I know I will be getting spokes that actually fit. The   spokes they re using are also 8 gauge about 4mm dia. The Thai guys ones are only 3mm
