SWM enduro update
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:04:15 pm »
Ok, I picked it up this morning, gave it a run and I'm happy. Why do all these Euro bikes sound like they're about to blow up??  :D
It's definitely not stock, but I can get it back close with the parts that were included. It came with the original (and new) front end complete and internals from the rear brake, so it will cost me nothing to dump all that stuff.
It's got Ohlins shocks and a modified swingarm on the rear. Shocks are leaking slightly, so that might need doing soon.
It's got a Mikuni carb but again the stock one is in a box.
Turns out it is a 280 after all and even came with a brand new Wiseco piston kit to suit.  ;D
No doubt I'll have more dumb questions as I get into it.
All in all, should be fun and very different to the Montesa.  :)

Yeah, I had planned to get it back to completely stock, but it's growing on me and it's certainly got patina.  ;D

P.S. I can't seem to find any numbers on the engine or frame at all.  ???
I concentrated on the steering head area on the frame.

Suggestions?

Tony
Can you take some up close photo's of the mods.
Is it an Aus bike or a later import?
The numbers should be on the steering head.
You could always sell it to me I'll find em :D
Cheers
Noel

This thing was allegedly built by Barry Higgins (yes, the Barry Higgins) when he had H&H KTM/Husqvarna etc in Georgia in the U.S. Not sure when it was brought over here.
I called him this morning and have emailed photos to him to clarify it's history. The Yamaha front end supposedly came off a bike that Mickey Dimond broke at a supercross. Long story how it ended up on this thing, but hopefully Barry will confirm the details.
There's definitely no numbers on the steering head and none that I can find on the engine.
The ATK brake setup is a simple bolt-on modification and I have the parts to retore to standard.
It's a strange one alright! Interesting though.  ;D

Paul spotted it for me on eBay.
It's been sitting in a shed in Elizabeth (Adelaide) for the last 15 years.  ;D

Thanks for that, Tex.............  ::)

The plot thickens with this thing. Apparently it sat in the crate at Barry Higgins' shop before being bought (still in the crate in 1984)
I can't help wonder why it was there.  ???

I'll keep digging........
