xl/xr500 into klx250
« on: April 30, 2010, 02:11:20 am »
Hi,

I have seen a couple of pics of these on the sight and realise there is some cutting of frame to do.
How difficult a job is this, re frame, can I use the airbox, exhaust clearance etc?

Any info gratefully received.

I have never done it but Mark Meadows did quite successfully. Story goes you chop the KLX frame above the footpegs and cut and paste the lower mounts of the XL500 frame on so you get your XL engine mounts. Nothings impossible.

VMX #41 has an article on a couple of KLX specials, basically the lower half of the frame is cut off & then the lower half of the yamaha frame is mated up to it. Have a read & see if you're up to it, I know it sounds more than I'd like to take on

The Yamaha/KLX in VMX issue 41 is a TT/XT with Green plastics.

I did have a basket case KLX250 years ago and thought of fitting one of my spare TT motors but time and space put an end to that one.
Honda XL/XR500 have been fitted but it would be interesting to see how a TT engine would fit.

One thing that had me holding off on the TT/KLX hybrid was the 36mm forks. I'd fit 38's but you would need to have the same offset to try and keep that sweet KLX handling.

Imagination and $ are the only limiting factors!
