bare metal finish

i have seen a few cars in magazines where people have sanded off all the paint and sprayed clear over the top as apposed to painting it a proper colour. i tried this method on some metal push bike bits i had lying around and they ended up going rusty. why is that? i cleared them straight after the paint was stipped off to not give moisture a chance of setting it. didnt work obviously

did you paint on a humid day? did you give the surface a wipe down with grease and wax remover?

Some of the bare metal hotrods I've seen in magazines are pretty rough in the flesh, and a few of them just rely on a rub with some steel wool and a spray with CRC/WD40 etc.

What sort of clear-coat did you use?
The cars that survive in bare metal use top quality 2-pak - and probably don't get left outside all that often....

Hi,
I cleared my RM 465 frame some 12 months ago and all is fine. The only rust I have is where I have chipped the clear off.
I love the clear effect.  ;D

i used septone clear in a spraycan. im thinking i may have to redo it on a dry day and just give it a wipe over with oil or wax or something

Autobarn will mix two pack paints into spraycans.

I was doing some repair work on my car and found surface rust under the paint.  Two painters told me that even if I paint it in acrylic I should undercoat in two pack primer as it will bite in and seal against moisture.

Por15 also make a clear that is designed to go over chrome and polished alloy to protect it.
