Wanted / Re: Tap
« on: March 24, 2023, 01:18:42 pm »
Hi Hoony , its for a prototype cartridge , I am limited with room , so I cant use 28 . I have 25, 26 and 28 x 1 , but not 27 . They are very expensive to buy as a special order . If we dont go ahead with the project or change it to another pitch , it will be another pricey item lying around forever . DC Swiss  could  make a die +tap  for $1850 , so I am trying my luck here first .I am not getting any younger , therefore much of those special tools will go to scrap one day , unfortunately .

Somebody asked what H6 means . H is the tolerance in size and the numbers are the finished surface . http://www.pfeffer.ch/isotolerances.htm

I am aware of the 12mm chromatised rods . Althoug the are not hardened , they will OK for a stationary restoration. What about the other  sizes 11, 11.5 11.8 ,12.5 12.7  and 13 mm . Are they available ?

You can probably get parts needed from seal suppliers Not much back then was especially made for shocks. They used seals already made for other equpment. I'd say if you really want them go ahead, theres always a soloution. Worst case scenario go to different size shaft, make a new seal head or whatever.

How much can you make a correct shaft for ? That is , using C45 rod , machine the ends , harden the outside .5mm  and then hard chrome it? How much would one shaft cost ?

Thanks , that's great to know that some people are after them . Next time we replace a set with new shocks , I will offer them to you . It happens less and less now , because there not many barn finds anymore like 10-15 years ago . There is Konis and the odd Marzoccis going in the bin sometimes as well .OEM shocks I always to keep them now as spares ,in case the bike gets sold . I remember advertising a mint T500 a few years ago .The two blokes from Sydney flew in and going over the bike thoroughly. In the end they said "If you had the original shocks ,we would have bought it at that price "  I quickly retrieved the original from the bin and said "There you are Sir" ......

And by the time you do all that , you can buy something adjustable and modern for similar  money or less.  (and paint them red , if that is what you want ) https://hyperpro.com.au/store/shocks/3612-adjustable-emulsion-gas-twin-1-pair/

General Discussion / Re: brisbane chroming recommendations
« on: September 29, 2022, 09:32:46 am »
Many (re)chromers have given up over the last few years ,mainly due to environmentally laws  , but also due to many people not willing to pay for a proper job .They hand in a rusty piece of metal and expect a better than new condition  piece back .Eroded surfaces sometimes need to be copper coated a few times and polished, before the final layer of chrome can be applied.

Yamaha / XS stuff
« on: September 19, 2022, 01:49:53 pm »
I have a huge stash of XS 650 stuff that has accumulated over the years .(New and used parts) (about 5 tons of it )Those engines have been used successfully in DT and VMX (mainly chairs). Anyone out there looking for that sort of stuff PM me . Also interested to the sell in one lot to someone that wants do sell it bit for bit at swap meets and make a buck or two.The price of certain XS parts have started to rise since many people are restoring them now or turn them into choppers.

Introductions / Re: Feetupfun is back after a break

Hi David welcome back . Good to see a face from the early beginnings . Not too many of us left here . A fair number have quietly passed away or lost interest .There were many good blokes around in the early stages of the forum (or VMX in general  for that matter ). It later changed a bit and got rowdy  , but most of them are on medication now ,or left altogether. ;). Looking forward to see old projects and hear old stories again.
