General Discussion / Re: Pre90 RMX250 which years eligible?
« on: June 05, 2017, 11:31:36 am »
90+ models have a 2-piece clutch cover among a bunch of other internal changes. This isn't an issue in itself, but I believe you cannot fit an 89 clutch cover to a later motor, so any 90+ motor stands out.

That said, the changes aren't huge, so you could probably make an argument that they are an eligible carry-over part.

Forks changed every year, and changed significantly in 91 or 92. Easily spotted by the steps in the upper tube between the triples.
Aussie delivered 94 & 95 RMXes got the upspec jap model, based on the 93-95 RM. These are easily identified by the radiator shrouds that cover the fuel tank. They are definitely not carry over bikes.

The yanks only ever got the same basic bike from 1989 to 96. The 96 got right way up forks.
Australia got the old/yank spec bike in 1996.
The last two points confused the hell out of me until I figured it out.

Wanted / Re: 92 Kx500 sub frame and seat

How good does the subframe have to be? I've got a couple of straight ones with some spinning threaded inserts and the like.
I can check them out properly if you're not chasing a perfect one.

General Discussion / Re: Should the factories reproduce classics?
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:16:46 pm »
This comes up with cars all the time.

What really matters is what happens when you're standing in the showroom with the cash in your pocket.
For all the internet talk of "I'd definitely buy a new [whatever] if I could", when you're about to hand over a substantial amount of money, all the romance and optimism suddenly disappears and you choose the new bike/car - you know, the one that does everything better than the old one (except look good).

How many of those repro Maicos do they sell in a year? ;) Even if they could mass produce them and drop the price to the same as a new YZF, how many more would they sell? How many people would plonk down $11k for one, instead of the same money on a 2017 YZF?

How many people bought new 513 CZs, when they were available? How many sat unsold until they were heavily discounted?

The Lazarus models only work when the factory screwed up and killed off a bike that was still competitive in the marketplace, and replaced it with something inferior: think KLR650, and um...

Yamaha / Re: YZ 125G/H

H swingarm fits straight on and is a good upgrade.
H wheel obviously fits straight into an H swingarm.

Pretty certain that the airbox and shock mudflap are the same, but it's been a long time since my brain has been in YZ125G mode.

Tech Talk / Re: KX125 1985 idle??

Depending on how lean it is with the needle dropped a clip position, it is possible to get shims that are half a clip thickness.

General Discussion / Re: When building a dirt bike/scrambler
« on: October 26, 2016, 09:24:29 am »
Depends on what you're doing with the bike.

Race bikes need to work, but I try to keep them looking mostly original. The billet, anodised bling stuff looks awful on old bikes - and that includes Pre-95 bikes - it only became semi-common in the second half of the 90s, so it looks out of place on anything older.

Project or runner?

I've got the one I was riding last year, in pieces. It's about 90% complete. Motor needs a rebuild.
Cheap, esp for a VTR member.
Give them my number if they might be interested.

I can't get to Bendigo in the foreseeable future, but I'll pay money for the MXAs.

What 85 Husky said about the thirty seconds.
Big or small, race bikes aren't meant to idle away forever - but you want them to idle for a bit so that you can put your goggles on or whatever. My point was more about you shouldn't get upset if it stalls after idling for minutes.

I sort of agree with the Vandy/Paulos train of thought, that a high idle can make a 125 easier to ride in some situations. But it can also make the bike hard to start, and just generally find it irritating.

Don't overthink it. Get the jetting right, and then set the idle so it idles reliably for 30 seconds when the motor is warm. Then go riding.

So yes, 83/84 Husky front brakes are also legal for Pre-82.

Simple people like me think.

Could anyone have fitted a 1969 roadbike hub (for e.g.) to a 1974 model MX bike in 1974?
Yes. (and likely someone, somewhere,  did)

So how can't it be legal in pre 75?

There USED TO BE a rule that prohibited road bike parts, but that was deleted a few years back. This allows era-correct road bike disc brakes in Pre-78 and earlier... For better or for worse..

For Evo, apparently yes.
I won't comment on Pre-82 without checking the regs (which
I'm not going to do on this f$&king POS phone!).

General Discussion / Re: Gumtree Scam
« on: October 20, 2016, 03:02:38 pm »
Here's another Gumtree scam to be aware of.

In this case a boat & motor, but could just as easy be bikes.

Buyer : "Hi Mate, the pictures look great, I'd love to come and look at it. WHAT TIME BEST SUITES YOU?"

Seller: "Any time after 4"

Buyer : "OK, we're coming down from up the coast, see you at 5"

Seller gets home at 3:30.....boat is gone.

Cheers, DJ

There are ways around that without being a dick... Easiest is to tell them the street but not the street number (so they can still find their way to the general area), and then have them ring you for the rest of the address at the arranged time. Or meet at the local servo and have them follow you home (servos have lots of security cameras, which is a bonus).

Also, actually talking on the phone weeds out lots of scammers, thieves and time wasters. It's not 100%, but it does radically improve the odds.
