Competition / Re: Dual Leading front brakes on a Pre82/Evo Legal or not?
« on: October 20, 2016, 01:06:11 pm »
If you want to be 100% legal at all events run to Evo or Pre-82 rules, then you need to use the TLS brake from a Pre-1982 bike that came with no linkage, air cooling.

To the best of my knowledge, this means te angled lug brakes from any of the following:
1980 YZ465G;
1981 YZ250H;
1981 YZ465H.
The 1984 YZ125L also has an angled lug TLS front brake which is operationally identical, and would take an extremely well trained eye to pick from the earlier parts. I would argue that it is a legitimate carry-over part.

It appears that the National level of the sport, the current interpretation will allow other TLS front brakes l, including those fitted to 1982 and newer models.

The stainless bolts I buy from the local bolt place behave something like an 8.8 or maybe a 10.9 - I wouldn't rate them as "low quality".

The ebay/gumtree team certainly seem to have the reverse-Midas touch...

Both websites are highly valuable tools for us punters, despite the best efforts of their custodians.

A/B (83~85) are different to C/D (86~88).
Which does he need?

I think may have a left-over early one the escaped my big clear out of A/B model stuff a few years back.

General Discussion / Re: Essential restoration equipment
« on: October 08, 2016, 10:44:10 pm »
Really, it depends on how many restos you think you'll do, and whether they going to be race bikes, nice tidy shed queens or 100% restos.

I mean, if you're just doing one or two bikes, then its probably not worth investing in tools to restore them - but the more bikes you do, them more it makes sense to buy the tools...

Yamaha / Re: First Model TT350??
« on: October 07, 2016, 07:24:48 pm »
Trusting my memory:
The SOHC piston has a big ugly hump in the middle to get the compression ratio up, and is quite different to the twin cam piston.

Pics on parts list may help to confirm or deny this.

Yamaha / Re: TT250/350 fuel tank
« on: October 06, 2016, 08:50:34 am »
And now that I've offered something that's (hopefully) helpful:
Is there a big tank for these bikes? I can experiment myself, just hoping that there's a known conversion that's been done before?

In my experience, Clarke tanks are good, not perfect.

They all fit well and are the right basic shape, but they all seem to have a moulding ridge along the bottom edge (and sometimes the back edge, where they meet the seat) which is a bit clunky compared to the stock tanks.
And the white is usually very slightly dirtier or creamier than standard Yamaha white. Don't get me wrong - they're much, much better than every used 20+ year old tank, but it can be a bit of a let-down compared to the perfect new white radiator shrouds you've just bolted on...

That sounds quite negative, but I'm actually happy to keep buying them - just warning that they aren't exactly like a NOS genuine tank.

I'm going to hang out for the Moto 4  ;D

Yep. A modern Moto4 or 5 would get my money, but the 3 doesn't excite me at all.

Maico / Re: Maico 700cc.
« on: October 04, 2016, 01:23:16 pm »
Biggest capacity current model mainstream 2T I know of are the 300s from Beta, Husqvarna/KTM, Sherco and TM.

TSP in Victoria is making 330 conversions for KTM/Katoberg/Katovarnas, and ESR makes 325 kits for YZ250s.

It's easy to romanticise big bores, but they stopped making them for a reason. The 500s are bulk fun, but  even in 1988/89 (when the KX & CR500 were still up to date with the 125s & 250s), too few buyers chose a 500...

Maico / Re: Maico 700cc.

The newer Maicos seem to exist only as internet memes - lots of talk, but actual buyers/owners are impossible to find.
I wonder if you could actually get one, even if you didn't have a better way to spend the cash.

I have one, a 2013 500. Built by a KTM dealer in Dortmund, Germany. Based on the 83/84 Maico engines which are used as Zabels in sidecar MX. A massive bike, and as strong as all hell. Pulls like a freight train at anything above idle and if I am honest, not a huge amount of fun to ride. Cool as all hell though!

No real differance, other than bore, between the 500, 620 and 680.

Here in SA, there must be four or five that I know of.

Cheers

Interesting, thanks!
I've got an 86 250 in the shed, and can clearly see the "new" versions are the same basic bike.
Without wanting to upset anyone, it does seem pretty clear that trying to make a 30+ year old design work in 2016 is pushing poop uphill. When the bikes are more expensive than more current designs, then you're trying to push it uphill with a pointy stick.

How does the motor compare to a KX500 or CR500?

I've got a spare of Issue 91 in POOR condition. Its been damp at some stage and a lot of the pages are stuck together - they're coming apart without much drama, but it needs someone with more patience than me...

$Free.
