Tech Talk / Re: Round Mikuni Main Jet conversion
« on: August 28, 2016, 11:59:52 pm »
I know this is an old thread but it caught my attention for a couple of reasons.

I gather most overlook the air jet/needle jet correction factor on most carburetors as well as the fuel used, both are a huge consideration when quoting jetting for any application.
The other is the needle jets themselves, be careful comparing OEM spec jets to Mikuni general consumer parts, many times the OEM spec has marking like the standard parts but is in fact quite different, shroud length for example changes everything.

NOS Suzuki RM 400/370 connecting rods, $225 USD each, I pay the shipping worldwide, buy 'em all for $700 USD shipped worldwide FREE!
RM400 N/T (last one) ,  RM370/400C (3 on hand), the 370 rod will also fit 400's all years. The only differences are the 370 rods use oil slots on the big end instead of holes and the needle bearing is 18 x 22 vs 18 x 24, for reference a 490 Maico uses an 18 x 22 bearing so no worries here on a 400 either.
Rods will be sent with appropriate small end bearing included.

Jerry Haas is the guy that knows what Pomeroy used for the Spanish GP, find him (Hugh Weaver stays in contact with him) and you'll put this to bed.

Blowing up from low res. scans don't usually come out very good but you can just make out the swingarm gusset on the far side of Jims bike.
That just about blows the CMS claim out of the water.

Unless of course they made their early frames with the single plate gussets like the originals.

Geezus Jerry, I thought you must have finished it......dont tell me Geoff is holding you up on a thingamejig.....I've been waiting for a pipe for 3 days now ??? ;D

You'll be waiting 3 months now ya cheeky bugger

I can't believe this much effort was spent to find out what I said was true, Pomeroy + CMS = B.S..

It was a comment in an add from Dirt Rider ( I think 74?)
It seemed like news to them at the time.

Pomeroy used a stock Pursang with his rear shocks, that CMS ad is bullshit.

A sad end for this one, a friend of ours (Freddie Collins) made it in to a 3 wheeler with a Cagiva conversion kit and basically killed it and it wound up in the Haverhill Massachusetts landfill. It used the RD frame and the rear shock I'm pretty sure wound up being a Koni car coil-over, the Yamaha damper was way too long.

Nice shot.
Kawasaki helmet on, but it looks like a Maico to me!

You're right, I had a Kawasaki sponsored ride for the 250 class but no open Kawasaki at the time so I rode my 501 until my sponsor came through with a new KX400.

Frosty, not long after this picture was taken Eric tried to make it a bit more "dirt friendly" by switching to one expansion chamber and both headpipes, it helped but more was needed, a 90 degree firing order would have done much to improve things but it still had the twin crank spinning and acting like a gyro, handling was "interesting". Eric switched to a Bettencourt  Husqvarna 360 Mikkola replica a few races later and pretty much was the guy to beat in his NESC class.
