well i just tried to glue a piece of mildsteel to the cromoly(?), 3mm thick both parts, used 6013 rod 95 amps, looks not bad..unfortunatelly i'm not so good to upload pics on this board yet..

here in italy these BETA frames (and also complete bikes of this era) are pretty commons and low priced too..actually i already built a twinshock XT250 with the original XT frame (KLX250 swingarm\IT250 forks);  the bike is nice and goes well, has been my daily drive for the last 4 seasons (april - october i use only 2 wheels for everyday moving)..only problem: it's a bit too long wheelbase (1500mm): this doesnt hurt the handling at all: i can U turn at low speed just as with a Vespa.. it's the look that i dont like 100 percent..

back to the welding: i guess back in the days these frames where welded with oxy\acetiline torch..

thankyou guys; actually i'm now thinking to modify a BETA 250 1977 frame to put in a yamaha XT250 2 valves motor (the goal is to build a little HL..do you now if this particular frame is made in cromoly? can i stick weld on this? if yes what rods i should use? the bike will be not raced or jumped in any ways..actually i use the bike on tarmac for 99%, albeit roads are not so smooth here

i'm searching info and real stories about  frame fabrications from scratches..plenty for harleys and choppers, nothing for vinduro\cross\twinshocks dirty thumpers?

mikuni VM 28 or 30? exhaust it's already free flow, the bike has a nice oomph at low end but not so good at higher rpm

Honda / Re: XR600 engine differences
« on: May 30, 2017, 08:56:10 pm »
all XR600 are 591cc 97X80 bore\stroke; early model 85 - 87 is twin carb equipped, 88 - 00 are single carb.

design of the heads are different between these 2 versions: the later (single carb) has automatic (centrifugal) decompression system (it's mounted on the camshaft right side), so camshaft are different (non interchangeable); the camchain and its wheels are narrower in the single carb motor (to have room for the decompression device).

except the heads, the motors are identical, except for the covers: magnesium (super lite and brittle) for the early 2 carb motors, solid , heavier alloy for the single carb motors (anyway they are interchangeable)

note that the XL600R motor (83 - 87, twincarb) are very similar, but they are 100X75; many parts are interchangeable with the XR motors; actually the XL600R it's a larger bore XR500 (83 - 84) motor

all these motors are bulletproof, if you care to provide them frequent oil changes: only the stator failure (they become fried often) can stop them

referring to a KLXframe \XT250 motor hybrid i guess graeme (is the boss of this forum, correct?) says that he done it and it's a rather easy swap (minor mods required).. i remember i found this statement somewhere in an old thread here..
