Hi there,
Thanks for the good information. Ive got a ohm meter off my workmate today so will begin testing each of the parts I have and compare the results against each other and the factory specs I have from a page out of the manual. Will check timing through the method suggested and hope to be in better spirits by the end of the week.

Cheers!!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your valid comments and yes ive tried a new spark plug cap but this has not rectified my issue. Further to my previous rant i have now tried every combination of bike A parts and bike B parts with much the same results....goes sometimes and the next day or so later it wont....to add injury to this i got 6 stitches in my pinky after stabbing it with a knife trying to strip off cable sheath in an effort to locate a short circuit. I now believe there could be three reasons my bikes wont go 1. both CDI units are crook 2. there is a bad connection or short in the wiring or 3. the decomp lever is not allowing the valve to return correctly. To cut a long story short i think im screwed unless someone has a brainstorming idea. Sure you all have had similar experiences so will understand the frustration. As a last gasp does anyone know a helpful soul in Christchurch NZ that would have one of these old bikes and may be willing to help me.

Cheers ALex

Hi Guys,
Would someone be willing to comment on the issue I have with my 1980 DR400 please. The bike I own kickstarts easily enough but once running has an intermittent faulty, that I believe to be electrical, which causes is to run at approximately 50% power. I have been unable to rectify this with all manor of tinkering so managed to pick up another 1980 DR400 as a donor bike. Ive swapped the entire electrical system that is Magneto, CDI and coil from the donor bike to my rebuilt one but now the bike wont kickstart. It does backfire through the carby and give me a painful kick back after about 10-15 kicks. I have managed to start this bike, with the donor bikes electrics, by pushing it an when it did run there is no evidence of the lack of power i mention earlier. I had intended to buy a new spark plug for the bike and maybe try a hotter one than the NGK D7EA im currently running. Can anyone suggest any alternative strategies for me to attempt to get this bike to kickstart with out breaking my lower leg or a small fire.

Gidday,
Is a rear guard similar to the one pictured on the MX action mag DR400 available anywhere? My rear guard is knackered and am looking at options to replace.

Hi there,
thanks for the tip we have pyramid parts here in NZ too and I can get fork seals from them at a reasonable. Are aircaps available for these forks still? They are mentioned in the white bros hot up for DR400 bikes.

Hi Riders,
If servicing DR400 front forks what is typically required? Ive done a bit of investigation and think Oil Seal, Ring Stopper, Dust Seal and Case Dust Seal would be sufficient. Can someone with experience verify this please. Also, are these seals available aftermarket or is it the same cost to go direct to Suzuki NZ.

Cheers Alex

Hi There,
ive had a look on the popular US sites for bike parts alphasports and partzilla and cant see any oversize pistons or rings still available. Do you chaps know if there are any rings available in oversize from aftermarket suppliers? I saw a Weisco set at 86mm and wondered if that would be possible since I think the bore is 85mm stock presuming the Weisco set are stated in diameter.

Cheers

Hi MXers,
were the DR400 bores known to be hard wearing? Im considering a set of rings and seals kit to reduce mine burning oil but thought I best measure the bore for wear before I go too far as I cant see any oversize ring sets available. Do you blokes know what the chances of the standard set of rings doing the job would be?

How does the front end come away from the frame on the DR400? I can see a single bolt at the top of the triple clamp but am unsure about the remaining assembly method. Would appreciate any pointer on this topic. Also would like to know of the availability of piston ring sets in NZ.

Thanks I think...Although I read in my Clymer manual the units are disposable or is there new technology that make that statement untrue.

Hi All,
Shocks on my DR are flogged strictly spring only action making for a ride with zero damping. What is best value for money in terms of replacement units. I will be honest ive got two kids so time riding is very limited therefore dont need top of the line gear.

Thanks for the good advice all,
Its a cam style carb and ive dropped the needle clip to the bottom because when i first fitted the carb it had this very problem and i figured it may have been starving but didnt know to fiddle with the choke for better performance. It goes like hell when it I do get it to stop the miss-firing. Really hoped to avoid stripping the carb again though so any ideas how I can achieve your points without breaking it down again?

Hi All,
My '80 DR400 has a unusual carby fault somewhere....The bike starts easy with the choke and decomp but once running its terrible in the mid range. Idles o.k and top end seems ok. Then if I operate the choke a few times while giving it some revs it seems to come right and run fine from then on. Would like to know if anyone else has experienced this with a 36mm Mikuni carb or could suggest what is the problem. If it ran like it does, once ive fiddled with the choke, i would be over the moon.

Happy new year all,
Our local suzuki dealer has no part numbers earlier than 1996. Can some one please post a link to a site where I might search for original part numbers that way i can approach suzuki with the parts im after. Failing that is there another more available cover that could be modified to fit?
