Champion Astro frame on its way to my shop, I will email Jim the photos
he can post them
I haven't been able to get the other Astro frame yet. Hopefully this week coming. I will be interested to see the pictures of the Champion frame.

As my Astro originally had no brakes do I fit drum style or can I fit a disc as I want to try and ride this bike at the titles next year. If the bike must stay period is what I mean so that it is legal.

That's the go Jim, as I said to Mark we could have a match and build through forum members at good pricing so that someone could take their motocross motor out and slip it into an Astro copy for a flat track meeting.

Sounds like a plan to me.

I know somebody that would be very interested in one or two frames if you went ahead with your
plans. Keep us posted. The Astro is a great looking bike. Do you have the fibreglass? If so,... that same person would be keen to do some moulds/forms. Hmmmm,,.....

As you can see my rebuild is just starting. I am borrowing a mates Astro so that we are comparing two frames and then getting the cost for jigging and manufacture. The guy that will be doing it for me is an aeronautical engineer and currently makes featherbed norton chassis.

I will work out pricing one I have spoken to him and presented him with the two examples.

What I would like to know is the type of steel required as I think the originals were like a Reynolds seamless tubing but some of the last ones were chrome moly ?? He can do it either way. If someone has some more info on the materials used it would be very helpful.

This guy can also CNC triple clamps to suit, so I am very interested in the dimensions for the wide front end.

Also can the front brake be a disc or is that not allowed.

Thanks for the info guys, it's much appreciated. I read the full rebuild story on the RD last night and was amazed at your attention to detail. It's a credit to you.

I am also interested in what size 19" rims are on the Astro, ie 1.65 / 1.85 ???

I am going to fit new wheels so I want to get it right.

Feel free to put any or all pictures of your bikes up as I am toying with having my frame jigged and then selling unpainted Astro copy chassis without engine mounts so that you can fit any motor from scratch and the geometry will be spot on.

Hey guys I have pulled the old chassis out of the shed and need some help from forum members. I am in the process of doing up my Bultaco Astro 250 1976-1977 model number 163.

As this bike originally has no front brake as std and most have never had a brake fitted to the front begs the question. Can this bike be raced in the pre 1980 class Australian flat track championships with no front brake. The rear brake std is a hydraulic disc and if I want to fit new wheels and hubs, where do I stand under the current rules. I would hate to change the original design.

Also it will be fitted with a Pursang 360 motor as this is all I could find.

Can anyone help me as I am out of touch with the rules.

Had a great day Saturday at the Bonanza and met more new people from the forum including Slider29. It was great to put a face to the names. Rode my dads Bultaco hagon and my Godden  speedway bike most of the day. I think I was more tired watching Jody line up time after time than I was from riding. Worst part was I forgot to train last year and ran out of puff again. Might have to get off my ass this year and really set some goals.

Condolences from the Wason family in Wangaratta. Another die hard leaves us but will not be forgotten. Many a time I sat in the pits pissing myself laughing as Lloyd and Allan King argued the night away at race meetings. R.I.P.

For those that are interested the above photo is one of the most current showing Jody Mason about to pass Ray Stevens and win the Victorian over 40's flat track ( short circuit ) title at Broadford this year. In 1991-92 I was the engine builder for Jody's much talked about Yz250b. Having only known Jody for some 23 years or more, I still missed seeing him in his early motor cross years. Later on we trained together for speedway and one night at the Victorian speedway Titles in Mildura Jody had to lay his bike down to avoid a fallen rider and in doing so broke his Tib and fib off the knuckle joint at his ankle. Had he finished the race he would have been Number 5 in open Speedway in Victoria. This guy is a very accomplished rider. I have also had the pleasure on many occasion to watch Jody on the 2 Valve Jawa around Broadford that he purchased off my father Ray Wason. Jody also rode my Fathers 250 Bultaco hagon in the 1997 Australian Championchips. Another bike that Jody rides is his Weslake Short Circuit bike and recently competed at the OZ titles on his slider Jap which he should have won but for mechanical troubles. Also recently my son Josh Wason bought Jody's lay down Jawa and is now a regular rider at Broadford.
I love the site and have not had a say recently, but when it comes down to it Jody and myself have lined up against some international riders that others could only dream of like, Phil Crump, Leigh Adams and Jason Crump, mark lemon, Chris Watson, Ryan Sullivan, Shane Parker and many more in Speedway, plus myself in early motor cross with Gally and Gunter, Goat Breker and Chuck Sun. So as you can see I have a lot of respect for this man and I am honored to have him as a friend.

Great story Brendan.
I remember Dad telling me that in the early days he could not afford a bike trailer, so his brother would tow dad to the races behind a car on a rope. He would race all day and then get towed home again.
Stuff like that is legendary.
