Tech Talk / Re: what did I stuff up here?

I'm interested to know what piston your using (single ring) if you don't mind sharing..?
Cheers.

The Wossner Piston is single ring with Teflon coated skirts.

I have seen this more than few times , You have to use an oil with wick action ( to help cooling ) if you choose not to then when you really labour the engine In mud/sand this can be the result. Most modern oils dont have wick action.

I'm starting to wonder the same that the Motul 800 isn't up to it? But a lot of people I've talked to run there air cooled big bore 2 strokes on it up to 40:1?
When I was racing my 1974 CR125 in the 1990's it had a problem seizing the piston on the exhaust side. The fix then was to get the piston Teflon coated and we ran Silkolene Pro Comp 2 I think it was? In a metal tin.

I'm feeling your pain Frosty. I've now seized our 1982 WR430 Husky 3 farken times at harrow. Over 3 years  :'(
The first time was with a new Wossner piston and running at 40:1 with Motorex Oil. It seized on the first big open strait.
Second time it had another new Wossner piston with slightly bigger clearances and runing at 25:1 on Motorex and seized on the track to the fuel dump.
This year we were out to 0.005" piston to bore clearance as it's on 3rd oversize and there's no fourth oversize. Also worked out it had a stuffed crank seal on the fly wheel side  :'( replaced that, we thought the seal was the reason for seizing it the previous 2 times.
We ran it in at 25:1 on Motul 800 this time and had a temperature prob in the exhaust to read how hot the gas temps were getting.
It was working well and I put about 60km in on it running it in. Getting it hot switch it off and cool right down, did that 3 times not even riding it.
Than road it for 5-10 minutes at a time short shifting it for 30km.
We did the practice loop on the Saturday at Harrow and it wouldn't rev out. So went playing with the needle and main jet.
With a 460 main (used to run a 440) and the needle on the bottom clip (Also changed the needle, I can't remember the needle that was in it but i was running a thinner needle to keep the mid throttle gas temps down) and it went the best yet.
I than got greedy and thought I'd try 30:1 and went for a ride and it felt even better up top. I was riding back to the camp and thought I'd check that it wasn't too hot at half throttle and glanced at the gas temp and saw 600 degrees celsius. And it seized again  :'(
I pulled the exhaust pipe off to have a look in the barrel and it's seized the inlet side of the piston.
Which by rights is the cool side of the piston.
So everyone's theory that the fuel has more of a cooling effect than the oil isn't correct as the engine didn't seize at 25:1 but did at 30:1 with a bigger main jet.
Anyway after that everyone at Harrow has a different theory why it seized-

1- Piston to bore clearance was too much not allowing the piston to transfer it's heat to the barrel and cool?
2- To bigger squish height, creating extra heat above the piston. It has been running a copper ring head gasket for years on Mahle Pistons and never gave any trouble.
3-  Something's wrong with the ignition timing or curve and it's running to hot with retarded ignition timing.
4- It has another vacuum/crank case leak somewhere?

Sorry to hijack your thread but I don't want you to be in the same situation we are in, 3 years in a row.
Harrow is a very hard environment on old bikes and every year we seem to be out of time and throwing our bike together last minute.
So our plan is to get the barrel re-sleeved back to a standard piston and correct clearances.
Get the squish height right.
Get the ignition curve checked.
Pressure test the crank case to 10PSI and make sure there's no leaks.
And than spend a lot of time running it in and than even more time getting the jetting correct which might be a lot easier on a dyno as after seizing it at half throttle I don't believe anyone can work out how hot the engine would be running at that speed and load by just reading the spark plug colour.
It happened that quickly.

Cheers Ryan.

We finally got the WR430 Husky started with a new piston and re-bore last night. This is the first time it's ran since seizing at Harrow last year-(bloody Crank Seals)  :o >:(
Anyway State Team- "Victoria's Better" is looking pretty good now that all four members bikes, PE175, PE250, DR400 and WR430 are almost ready to make the trip to hallowed grounds of Harrow on Friday. Lets hope the predicted rain stays away.    Cheers Ryan.

Husqvarna / Re: WR 430 maximum oversize Piston?

Thanks for the response guys.
I'm not getting into the whole rich/lean oil fuel ratio argument. I just want to get my bike up and running again.
Where is everyone getting there barrels re-sleeved? I've had a bit of a search on google and it seams either Serco or Ian Williams Tuning in SA.
Has anyone had work done by either of these two company's? Or can recommend another company to do this work?
Thanks Ryan.

Thanks for the info. I haven't had time to ring an Australian Wossner Piston supplier yet. I have check with Phillip from Husky Parts USA and he is saying a 4th over size isn't available? Does anyone happen to have a spare barrel laying about? Also I know that you have to split the cases to replace the clutch side seal. But would of thought if it was leaking it would of been sucking gear box oil and blowing a lot of smoke? Or can it still be sucking air? I really don't want to seize this engine for a 3rd time. The first time I was running it at 40:1 so I thought that was the cause for it to seize. So second time around we went back to the good old 25:1 and it still seized so that why I went and checked the flywheel side crank seal that had definitely been leaking.
Thanks Ryan.

Husqvarna / WR 430 maximum oversize Piston?
« on: July 05, 2017, 10:02:51 pm »
Hi,
Our poor old 1982 WR430 has seized its second piston on maximum 3rd oversize- 87.42mm.
I haven't got the bore parallel honed yet, to see if it will clean up well enough for a 3rd attempt at a 3rd oversize piston.
But if it doesn't, I was looking at husqvarna-parts.com and saw that you can get a 4th oversize 500cc piston- 87.94mm.

Will a 500cc piston fit/work in a WR430?
I also worked out that the reason why that it's seizing pistons is that the fly wheel crank seal has been leaking.

Thanks Ryan.

Not a problem TEX, We all know the power the ACT have on getting things there way. LOL. No hats off to them it was a huge effort to get 4 bikes and riders around the BIG lap course. We will hopefully see you all at Castella at the end of the year.

On another note YouTube has seemed to of done something screwy with my Harrow movie? It's meant to be about 20 minutes long. But stops at around 8 Minutes area? Anyway I've deleted the first 8 minutes and will try uploading the last half as a separate movie.
Cheers Ryan

Link to Part 2 of my footage with the annoying bit of mud stuck on the lens. There's some good pictures at the end of the movie if you want to skip the rest of the special test section.

Our- State of origin team "Victoria's Better" Harrow weekend had a great come back to the little town of Harrow after a year away.
We spent Saturday carefully running in my bike- 1982 WR430 Husky and Rob's 1980 Suzuki PE250 after both bikes getting a fresh can of compression earlier in the week.

Sunday came around and we were the 3rd team to leave on the frosty and foggy morning. Being in the first group of riders the bog holes weren't too bad, the special test was pretty tricky to follow. I got a bit over excited on the open sections and guess what, i seized the husky again  :'( Again i let it cool down and waited for the old man to catch up and then got a push start and she fired back into life. So from there on in i short sifted the husky and took it pretty easy.

We finished the first BIG lap and came back into the camping ground to have a feed and do some running repairs. I raised the needle on the husky and added a bit more oil to the fuel even though i was already running at 25:1 So we lost a bit of time doing all of this.

The second BIG lap was easier in spots and a lot harder in others. Poor Dad buried the DR400 and took 3 of us to free it in one hole.
Then Rob managed to smack a rock strait into his rear chain guide and bend it to the point it was pushing the chain off the rear sprocket. So we lost a bit more time straitening that out.

We all managed to finish 2 laps each of the large loop and giving us a total of 8 laps for our state of origin team- Not sure how we didn't win this?
Anyway we then stayed Sunday night and enjoyed a few more beers and BBQ.

Here's a bit of YouTube footage with a couple of pictures of the fun and games at the end of it, enjoy.
Cheers Dewy.

Vinduro / Re: The 2014 Harrow Vinduro thread!
« on: July 30, 2014, 06:02:15 am »
Well for my first Vinduro back since taking a break from it in 2013 I picked an awesome event. It could of been even better if i didn't listen to John and his- I run my Husky at 70:1 all day with no problems  : : ) : : ) : : ) : : ) : : ) 40:1 was to lean for my old air cooled girl  :'( :'( :'( But you can't keep a good Husky down  ;D

Well after not getting very much time to run the Husky in, I took Saturdays ride as a sighting lap and to enjoy a ride with my old man on his trusty DR400 and my mate Rob on his PE250T. I struggled to keep my eyes on the track, some of the scenery they had us riding through was just stunning. On the first long sandy up hill the Husky started to show signs it wasn't happy and by the time i reached the top she had stopped  :-\ After leaving her to cool down for 5 minutes she was happy to fire up and still sounded sweet. So we continued riding a long and enjoying the serenity and the awesome course.

Once back at camp it was time to check over everything and lube the chain and fuel up for the next day, the Husky was all good and so was the DR400.
Robs PE had stalled after going through the last creek crossing  ??? He eventually got it up and running, but once back at camp we found there was only one bolt holding the exhaust flange to the barrel  :o So we went about pulling the expansion chamber off and finding some bolts to screw here back together.
We got her into the parc ferme just in time.

Then it was time for a few beers before we headed off to the hall for dinner. The meals were great and again we had a few more beers but i was trying to take it a little easy as Rob and i had a pretty big night Friday night when we first arrived.
We wondered over to the pub after dinner and there were a few teams in full swing and really having a good time.
I think i called it a night around 10pm.

Sunday-
I was dreading the cold start and knowing the husky wasn't starting well since its rebuild didn't help. We watched the first 10 or so teams head off on there way and we were starting on the 24th minute. Once again the Husky didn't want to start so i ended up roll starting it down the little hill near the start line  :) Might be easier to do that next year.

As i was part of the Occidentals team twice  ??? ??? Something funny going on there : : ) : : )  I thought I'd have a bit of a crack and left Dad and Rob to set there own pace. So the Husky and i were off at a reasonable pace and I got my first hit of reality going under the bridge with an injured rider that distracted me enough that i stalled the bike.
I hope he was ok??
The husky still didn't want to rev out and just seemed off. On the first open paddock section i opened her up and by the end of it the Husky had once again seized and this time wasn't keen on a re-start  :'( :'(

Another fellow husky rider pulled over and felt my pain and offered to send help. After about 20 minutes Dad and Rob caught up to me and we tried push starting the Husky, she fired up and sounded ok. So i continued on riding and she didn't seem to bad after her last seize.

I caught up with a few riders and rode with a guy on an Honda XR for a bit that was setting a good pass most of the time seems i wasn't game to open up the Husky again.
When i got to the pits i thought why not try putting her back to 25:1 and see if that will help her survive the rest of the day. Well as soon as I reached the other side of the first creek crossing it felt like a different bike. The old Husky was pulling like a train and really wanted to be opened up  ;D ;D

And all i could think was my old man saying your running it a bit lean aren't you... Oil;s cheap, engines aren't... So beware of running your old air cooled bike to lean, I guess a jump from 25:1 to 40:1 was pretty big.

I finished out the day having a ball and really wishing I had just put some more oil in the fuel from the beginning, as the husky was flying with some really fast transport sections and enjoying every minute out on this fantastic course.

I ended up doing 3 laps on Sunday and finished my third lap at 1:50pm and was told i couldn't go out again  :'( :'( Which now looking back was probably a good idea as I was stuffed.
A big thank you to all the sweep riders, the Harrow township, and the Veri committee for putting on the best Harrow yet. Bring on 2015.
I hope to have some GoPro footage by the end of the week too.
Cheers Dewy.

hitting the water that hard is why its taken 2 years to rebuild it! its not a jet ski.....

I was trying to aquaplane across the creek and clearly failed.  :o :o
Will try hitting it in 6th gear this year  :P :P

Tex- If you're on a Husky, that's probably a good idea anyway.

ill take your advice tex and go the long way, I hate wet feet! ;D

My Husky had no problems going through the creek flat out in 2012  ;D ;D

The old girl fired her first shot in anger today since I pulled the barrel off her over 12 months ago  :) :)
It was bloody hard to kick start it standing on 3 spare car wheels, while it was still strapped to a work bench on a centre stand with no wheels in it.
But I was determined to make sure it would start before i headed off to bed.

See ya at Harrow, travel safe.
Thanks Dewy.

P.S.
It would be nice to be taking home the 2014 version of these dust collectors, after I missed out on riding Harrow Vinduro last year  :P :P

For Sale / Re: Classic Jersey's and T shirts
« on: July 17, 2014, 05:07:00 am »
I should have some of the Husky T shirts at Harrow Vinduro. So if you would like one please let me know what size and colour combo you would like.
The Jersey's-
I'm still looking into, from what I can work out the Suzuki ones shouldn't be a problem, I haven't got to Mr Yamaha yet. But from the sounds of it they don't like keeping the good old days alive  :'(

Tycon who made the Suzuki rising sun Jersey are another Aussie company to bite the dust  :( But they were operating not that long ago.

Anyway I'll keep you posted and thanks for the offer of original gear to copy if we can.
Cheers Dewy.
