My favorite sidecar pic.  I took this at Barrabool, around 1975.

Every time I have ever thought about racing one...I remember this and shake my head. ::)

eBay Finds / XL350 in XL250 frame
« on: September 04, 2017, 09:29:43 pm »
On Ebay now:   http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-XL250-XL350-Barn-Find-Survivor-VMX-Vinduro-Tracker-Resto-Project/162659029915?hash=item25df3bd39b%3Ag%3AUBQAAOSweD5ZqpSk

XL250 with XL350 engine. Owned by older rider & dry stored, unused for many years.

The Good news, the motor has plenty of compression and starts easily, top end is quiet. Wheels are excellent, New sprocket & new O-ring chain, Brakes seem very good, Tyres are 95%.  Classic period Mods: Renthal alloy bars, custom exhaust (compact & pretty quiet), Mikuni carby conversion, Leather seat cover, welded shifter.

The Other news, seems smokey, tank was full of two-stroke, but tank and carby flushed out, & still some smoke. NO blow-by from the crankcase vent. If you're Lucky, it's just oil in the exhaust pipe, degraded valve stem seals or a glazed or stuck oil ring???
Might be worth giving it a real good run, before pulling the top off.

250's are pretty common, 350's are very desirable. This bike is offered in "as is" condition, unregistered, as a restoration project. Start price is the Reserve price.

Cheers, Daryl.

They require a tuned length of around 28 inches with a little bit of back pressure.

Depends on the Revs.   At 11,000rpm  20" is nearer to ideal.

I use a drilled metal cone for a baffle, area of drilled holes is greater than pipe end.
Gives something for the machine examiner to tick the box as an "effective muffler".

Tech Talk / Re: Leak Down Tester
« on: March 27, 2017, 10:50:12 pm »
I bought one, like this, for a really, really, good price. (gotta love an on-line Auction)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Leak-Down-Engine-Cylinder-Head-Leakage-Detector-Tester-Tool-Kit-Car-Truck-Auto-/131647121913?hash=item1ea6c7a9f9:g:OOsAAOSwzgBY0cAK

Idea is to block the outlet (create 'zero leak') then set the testing pressure with the regulator, (therefore a constant test pressure).

Connected to a cylinder, (2 or 4T) you read the leak rate on the second gauge as a percentage pressure loss.

2T's Loss from rings or head or plug seal with piston rings above exhaust or wherever with inlet & exhaust blocked.
4T's you can listen at the exhaust and inlet ports, for leakage from valves.

Best as a comparison test, against a known good (new parts & bedded in) assembly, than an absolute reading.
Use to monitor wearing in & then wearing out.

One TRAP for Young(ish) players with the Chinese kits.  The hose must be the same one they use for the Compression Tester Kit.
It has a Schroeder valve at the bottom.......No leaks are detectable with this valve in place.

I also replaced the air fittings with Nittos (personal preference).

Cheers, Daryl.

Pursang Cro-Mo Frames had a head stem tube that was expanded, for the bearings.

A Mk5 or 6 has the straight one, as pictured.

General Discussion / Re: Gasless mig ?
« on: December 04, 2016, 12:19:52 am »
Back to Gasless Mig (more accurately called Flux Cored arc welding).
They have their uses. eg. welding outside, where wind will waste an awful lot of Mig or Tig gas.
Flux Cored is also more tolerant of older, dirty or rustyish metal, (like a stick welder).

Biggest problem, is that the really cheapest ones, are AC welders, (like a stick welder).
They Splutter & Spatter and make welds that look like you have never used a welder, (Arc, Mig, Tig or Oxy.) in your life.
With patience & practice & fiddling with speed & power (volts/amps), you can sort of 'stick metal together' with one.

They can be vastly improved by converting them to DC, using suitably rated diode rectifiers.
You can also add capacitors, to even out any DC pulse, if you are worried about that.

If you don't have knowlege, experience, confidence & time to do this,
Spend the extra money and buy a Gas/Gasless Mig which should have a DC output, and use it gasless.

You need to ensure the polarity is changed to Negative Electrode for flux cored.
For thin panel steel you still need to do stitch & cool welding to prevent burn through & distortion.

Heaps of u-tube videos about all this stuff, though most are not worth your time.

Cheers, Daryl

General Discussion / Re: Gumtree Scam
« on: October 20, 2016, 11:00:37 am »
Here's another Gumtree scam to be aware of.

In this case a boat & motor, but could just as easy be bikes.

Buyer : "Hi Mate, the pictures look great, I'd love to come and look at it. WHAT TIME BEST SUITES YOU?"

Seller: "Any time after 4"

Buyer : "OK, we're coming down from up the coast, see you at 5"

Seller gets home at 3:30.....boat is gone.

Cheers, DJ

Different balance factor between 125 crank & 250, big difference in piston weights.

Cheers, Daryl.
