General Discussion / Re: 2019 Broadford Bonanza
« on: June 05, 2019, 11:38:55 pm »
Hi Jasper, MX needs a theme. Road racing have the major theme but Rick Wason always organises a theme for the Speedway and Dirt Track eg Romsey Reunion, The Street SR4s, Vincent/JAP sidecars. Many top line ex MX stars have frequented the Speedway as they also rode Romsey or Short Circuit. But nothing leads them to the MX track as it just a ride what you brungtype feel. Lots of Wallan racers when Rosco Holden did his Mini bike Reunion last year. Why not develop a theme such as showcasing the Grand National winners and racers from Christmas Hills or let’s honour Ray Owen for starting many careers at Wallan, or bikes of the Suspension revolution, or Big Bad 4 Bangers. It needs someone however with the drive to contact and persuade some of the greats to attend, organise and showcase some riders and bikes. Just an idea and my 2 bob opinion.

General Discussion / Re: Plastic Guard suppliers

Thank you everyone for the info. The 73 Penton has been a long process. Used to ride one back in the day in sub juniors when Stephen Cramer and Skippy Parsons we’re racing them in A and B grade. Found a frame that had been heavily modified with an Aspes motor, 250 swing arm and forks. Found a motor and just about got everthing re engineered back to stock. Know the foibles of thegearbox but I was keen to have something a little bit different. A few mentioned Peston Petty guards might be a better option and that they are available in Oz. Can someone tell me who is the supplier of these.
Again thanks.

Looking to buy a set of guards for a 1973 KTM/Penton. Not probably going with original alloy. What are DC Plastics like to deal with. Same guards advertised at Maxwells and VMX Unlimited but I believe there are issues purchasing via them.

Restoration with the occasional dirt track. What do you recommend Walter.

I feel 2 things need to occur for VMX to be successful at the Bonanza.
1. Need to have someone step up onto the organising committee; so that the track can be modified in some way to suit the older bikes and 2. also this person needs to coordinate a theme.
Rick Wason does it with the Speedway/Dirt track. We had the 2017 Romsey  longtrack Reunion and this year the Neil Street Tribute/SR4 Jawa conversion which revolutionised speedway to the 4 valve motors. Also linked to the Road Race theme with 11 Vincent Sidecars for track and display. Each year brings new people to the event, most like it so much they return. 2019 theme is already set as Speedway and track sidecars through the eras. Already there is much fb chatter with sidecars coming out of mothballs to be recommissioned for the event. This then becomes part of the Speedway Spectacular at 4.00pm.The weekend becomes a celebration of some major event in Speedway/Dirt track history.

VMX has lots of history and could have themes such as Big British Bangers, The LTR revolution, The Japanese Invasion, European uniqueness. have a parade of these bikes at Luchtime and maybe an Exhibition ride round by past Champions, akin to what Classic Dirt does. Would be good to see the likes of  a Flood, Adams, Pengelly, Cramer, Dinsdale etc

When I go I just see a couple of bikes circulating. I do the swap meet, wander the camp grounds to see the bikes and then head to the Road Race section. Finding a snugger camp spot would be good so seeing all the bikes without walking miles may also assist

Won’t modern MX bikes be contrary to the theme, that the Bonanza is for the older bikes?

Going to be a beaut Grouty. I’m starting on a replica of the BSA speedway bike, Nigel Boocock tested. Have a CCM motor that a mate used in our Junior MX sidecars back in the day. 500cc or under. He won many Victorian State titles on it and placed in the Aus titles. The gearbox always blew so he carved it off and put 4 studs to run an A10 gearbox. So the motor is very close to how the speedway motor looked. Going to put it in a jawa frame until I can get my hands on a Rod North frame.

Left cr125 for a while and clutch plates are sticking. Any way to get working other than pull apart?

Story goes that Dean Taylor of SA on his tz700 yam speedway sidecar and Clarry Jones of Vic had a fierce rivallry (as most sidecar boys do). At Bendigo Showgrounds one night Dean got Clarry to dive into his tool box and was met by a pet snake. Clarry retaliated a few weeks later by swallowing his gold fish at a party. Apparently one re emerged later still flapping. Didn't witnessed this one but I did of a few of Clarry's other jokes.
