Yamaha / Re: 79 yz400 motor is it the same as a 77
« on: June 08, 2015, 10:14:26 PM »
Yes because the frame rails at the bottom are longer on the older 400 frame

And

No, not without a lot of welding and frame mounting point changes. Eg the front bolt holes and plates are different.

I'll  swap you a yz250E frame for a 77 frame.
All 77 plastics swap over as they are generally the same.

Bike Talk / Re: Restoration Project Knowledge
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:28:51 PM »
If the bike appears to be reasonable and all there, as you pull thing off it and your going to bag and tag, clean it up, inspect it and if its all ok then tag an bag. If its not ok then put it on your list and start looking for its replacement.
That little piece could be the project stopper if you cant find one straight away. Start looking sooner.

When you start putting it back together all the parts are there, clean and ready to go back together.

Good luck with the journey.

General Discussion / Re: Something we all should have in the shed
« on: May 23, 2015, 04:44:35 PM »
Two young apprentices on the end of a 3/4 drive socket - 2" nut and 2 metres pipe extension on a bobcat gear box drive nut to undo. Wouldn't move!
Boss thought we were whimps! and had a go himself. No luck! Started using all different methods he had up his (older) sleeve and still no luck. So he cut the nut off!
Didn't have the heart at that point to tell him the manual said that it had to be torqued up to over 250ft/lbs.

A week later and about $500 in parts to fix bosses handy work and $500 on a torque multiplying tool and some free choice words, one apprentice had the jobs done.

It was known for quite a while that two young barred up apprentices could F#@K the boss every time. (The joke lasted for years!) ;) ;) ;)

General Discussion / Re: How much 4 a tube fitted ?

Jimson

I showed your son how to change a tire on the DT1 at one of the CD's a several of years ago. Buy him the tire levers  ($20) and let him go for it!

When he's has had plenty of practice and gets the job down to 10 minutes off and on the bike, that's when you'll start making money out of him! Next time we catch up I'll show you as well. Practice Practice Practice!!!! Then it becomes easy.......

Tubes are cheap, times the costly item in life!

General Discussion / Re: GMC develops new Honda CR60 Pipe
« on: May 04, 2015, 06:55:17 PM »
I recon it would fit nicely on my uncles 1930's kero tractor. The standard pipe on it came from the laundry drain under the old cement wash tub. With it's 8 or 9"bore, 10"stroke, this pipe looks like it would give it plenty of mid range (at about 600rpm on this old girl). Might even get 6 mph out of the old girl too! or maybe I'm dreaming...................

Bit worried about the jetting though!

Tech Talk / Re: Ballards XR600
« on: April 22, 2015, 06:20:05 PM »
I had a standard xr600 and still have an Ballards Xr630.
The heads on the Ballards bike was some cleaning up of the intake around the divider before the valves. Yes, the big fin does help the cooling but like all agree, it would be only a small amount. Oil coolers and 500k oil changes make them live longer. The filter in the bottom of frame oil tank needs to be checked regularly. Oil starvation caused by this filter is teminal.
The 630 had the option of the forged piston which rattles and knocked until it got hot, something it didn't  do a lot unless pushed in the bush.
The suspension is the biggest improvement.
I've  had mine for 20yrs. Every time I think of selling it I  go for ride on it and quickly move that idea on.
Hope  you bought it. I'm after a another drum brake rear one (1988 to 1990) for VMXing.

Wanted / Re: 1977 YZ 38mm Forks
« on: March 20, 2015, 02:24:55 PM »
Viper

The 3 ebay ones are all 1978 or later forks. 1977 forks have only one drain nib at the back of the fork. From memory the under hang from the axle is longer also on 78's.
You would be challenged getting the bike off the trailer by someone in the know! As it did to me........ :( :o
It took me 6 months of ebaying to find the right set.

Good luck..

Put a standard head back on and see where that goes. The timing verses compression ratio makes a big difference. If the bike runs better than work out the difference in the combustion chambers and work towards a happy medium.

Also, are you using the standard DT CDI box. Strangely enough, an IT or YZ  CDI may make a difference.

Wanted / Need a mx125a or yz125c/x seat
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:04:27 PM »
Hi all

Looking for a seat for the above bikes. At least a reasonable base and foam for a new project. Anything reasonable considered. Thanks.

eBay Finds / Re: Honda 1991 CRE 250 ???
« on: December 30, 2014, 12:32:54 PM »
The CRM's were popular in Japan. Saw one there at the beginning of the year and had to have a second look. Not everyday you see what looks like a CR riding in the traffic! CRM's are like the DT200 Yamaha, sold up as a race ready trail bike.

They only made it here as second hand grey imports (some via Bikebiz in Sydney). They were bringing them in in batches of 50 if I remember right. Wouldn't have been more then 100 all up via Bikebiz. They were also bringing in the CBR250 before Honda realised what they were missing out on.

Only CR's that I'm aware of the ended up with compliance plates were the last of the CR500's (CRE?) and if you can find one you'll pay more than what they cost from the Honda Dealer.
WMW 250 and 125's (these are gold if you can find one) Real CR's with head lights. I think they ranged from about 1988 (?) to about 1992 but I stand very corrected on the dates.
