Now, this sounds like fun. A Day/Twilight event at Canowindra. I recall a thread from a while back about this event but as yet no info has been forthcoming. Is the event still a goer? Can anyone tell me the details, like what, when, and classes etc? I believe it is to be held Saturday arvo. Is there any riding on Sunday? I am VERY keen to get to this as it will only be my second VMX race this year. Will there really be a Pre 78 RM125 race?
-
This event is defineately a goer. Event is being held at Canowindra NSW on the October long weekend. Saturday afternoon (evening maybe) will be trophy races based on age groups and Sunday will be two full rounds of normal HEAVEN pointscore racing. Camping facilities available at the track with showers and toilets, some power available on a first in best dresses basis. Pre 78 freindly grass track is going to be the order of the weekend with possibly a few small man made obstacles but again, these shall be Pre 78 friendly. We hope to get the flyer up on the website this week. The whole event is being promoted as a family event with plenty of local shopping and small country town attractions for the ladies. So get behind it guys and indulge in a roadtrip. It will be a great weekend so lets all get behind it.
-
Are the Mexican's welcome?
-
Mexicans, Canadians, you name em. The more the better.
-
I'm there. :)
Just up the road, in a nice part of the world, and the opportunity to race in a different setting - how could you miss it?
-
I'll blow the dust of the 83 KX500 and grab a drum of race fuel and where a goer.
-
On a sensitive note, I heard that Damo got his arse kicked by an old bloke, like 20 YEARS older!
Sorry Damo, I heard it on the news last night! EVERYBODY was laughing er talking about it LOL! :D
-
Great racing on the weekend between Carl and Damo in a number of classes, even if I was watching it from behind them in their dust! I am sure that both of them would agree. The 125 Trophy race was close for the whole race with not more than a couple of bike lengths in it for the majority of the race with Damo edging out Carl for the win. Carl was to exact his revenge though in the Pre85 Open race on his 84 CR500 that looked in unmolested original condition and showed us all how a big bore two banger should be ridden. Talking with Carl about the bike over the weekend and he said that he loves riding the bike and he sure does know how to ride it.

Brad,
You are a BAD MAN and a great fisherman.
If the WP shock on the 500 did not blow up and turn into a pogo spring it would have been a different story, Carl is always a fast racer and fierce competitor and deserves the spoils because he always puts in 110%.
Damo.

Looks like it may be a little while till we can get any more info from the HEAVEN site, it's been hacked. Hopefully their web-host can get it back online soon. In the meantime, if I can post anything here on OzVMX please let me know or send it to webmaster at ozvmx.com. I'll post up a basic blurb on the home page tonight.
-
Graeme,
Thanks for that. Much appreciated. We are working on getting the entry forms and all the event details together and hopefully shall forward to you by tomorrow evening at latest. Thanks again.
-
This event just sounds better and better to me. I understand the track is in the showgrounds, in town itself? That is very cool - imagine charging around in the middle of a town... I'm hoping they've even got grandstands and stuff for the huge and vocal crowd to pack and cheer us on. Or am I getting a bit carried away now?
Whatever, a nice little grasstrack on an oval in town with twilight racing has to be something you wouldn't want to miss!
Here's a map of town, I am guessing we are at the Canowindra Oval?
Edit: Yep, there's a grandstand and everything... Looks so nice and green and grassy. Is this sort of like a riding on a golf course thing?
-
Yes, sounds awesome.
"The word" is lots of fast-paced age-racing on Saturday arvo/evening - apparently they're aiming for five rounds of racing. Each round will be made up of races for age group races for pre-78 and pre-85.
My biggest dilemma is working out whether to go home on Saturday night, or to stay at Canowindra - but I suspect that Saturday evening might be one not to miss...
*What is "Normal" when you've got characters like Rossco and Fernando lurking around the place? :D
-
hey guys. just a quick note to let you know that the pic that graeme has posted for canowindra long weekend race is acutally of the sports oval and not the showground. i will try and work out how to post pics on this bloody thing and do so asap. if not just go to google earth and search for rodd street canowindra. you should be able to clearly see the oval trotting track, the bike track will be inside that.....cheers greg
-
What? You mean we AREN'T ripping up that lovely oval? Bugger... But I guess inside the trotting track is fine too. We couldn't like... ummm... run some long track AROUND the trotting track too, huh?
I tried google street view all the way up Rodd St but couldn't see the trotting track so can't post a pic of it. If anyone has a pic of it email it to me at webmaster at ozvmx.com and I'll post it here.
Nathan I like the sound of all that age racing stuff. It does mean that I won't be up against you at all cos you're such a young whippersnapper, but at least I will only be racing other decrepit old fogies.
-
But what about Sunday? Pre-78 125 grudge match! :)
-
Yep, grudge match on Sunday! A fastish grasstrack, should be good to see if the YZ-X is quicker than the RM-M, eh? We need photos! I'll do the race report of it, too!!!
I see the track now, it's the other side of the road from the Oval. Here's some pics, you can kind of just see the trotting track in the third pic.

i tried to send you a pic via webmaster. i couldnt work out how to do it......
cheers greg
-
Bet its a heap greener than that now?
My lawn is taking over - I assume its the same up at Canowindra?
-
Can we stray onto the Trotting track for a hot lap?
Is that Magoo's name & number on the toilet block?
-
looks hot and dusty, any chance of a water truck, maybe I can sponsor it
Damo give me a call I have quite a few photos of you from Clarence
rgds
Carl
-
hey guys its much greener now and i have aranged a big water truck and a couple of small ones. should be ok. Afraid no hot laps on trotting track this year but may be possible next time
cheers greg
-
Hey Greg, is the track layout fairly tight? I'm assuming if it's inside the trotting track it'll be a pretty tight little bugger, which is fine by me.
-
wont say to much but should be fun
greg
-
Is there power & running water and sealed roads and is it true your the Lord Mayor of Canowindra in disguise posing as a vmxer Greg :-*
-

Why is it, that the first thing I mentally add into those pictures isn't a race track, nor a bunch of old bikes, its a half-tanked Rossco?
-
What do you mean "half tanked" Rosco normally does the job properly.
-
Oh... I assumed that it was only half-tanked because he'd only had three shandies?
-
Hey Graeme when the half tanked shandie drinkers have finished carving up the race track, would love the after photos ;D
ps nice before shots 8)
cheers & enjoy
-

cheers greg
-
Thanks Greg, they'll do to give us an idea. Looks fine to me, I like the series of jumps thing. Should all make for some good racing and a decent spectacle for the crowd too. How does the start work - rubber band, flag drop, gate, or big bloke with a shottie?

cheers greg
-
It was Super Awesome.
More later, when I've had sleep.
-
I must admit I headed out to Canowindra on Friday with no real idea what was going to come of the event, it sounded good. Now, after competing on the Saturday (went home crook on Sunday), I can't remember having so much fun on a dirt bike of any type for years. It was absolutely fantastic. The track was a bit hard to overtake on but was a challenge and a shit load of fun, but from all accounts today was even better. Right next door to the golf club and 2 minutes from the centre of town, if they'll have us back, next year will be even better. Thanks to Greg and all his local mates and the Heaven club for the foreight to try something different. I can't wait 'til next year
-
Yep, totally agree, that was an absolute blast. The track might sound a bit tame, and I guess it may not have been all that challenging to the fast guys, but above all it was FUN. Everywhere I looked I saw happy faces, and watching the races I saw lots of good tussles all the way through the pack. Your webmaster even had a (brief) moment of glory when through a bit of good luck (everyone else fell over I think) I led the Classic 125 race for a couple of laps before letting Uncle Donnie and Nathan S by. Nathan of course seemed unnecessarily pleased with pipping me right on the line.
The facilities were great, the support excellent, and organisation was oh so smooth. Dinner and presentation Saturday night was all very civilised - what a top feed. Thanks to all involved in making it happen. Please let's do it again next year (I'll spend that year practising grasstrack to make sure there is no way Nathan can beat me next time).
-
Awesome weekend. Saw some of the best close racing I've seen for ages with battles going on right through the field in all classes. Some new faces in the winners circle too.
The age races were great as we got to ride against guys from other classes that don't normally compete against each other.
A huge thanks to Greg and all the Canowindra helpers, the HEAVEN Committee and to all the riders that made the effot to get there.
Bring it on next year ;D ;D ;D
Cheers
Shaun
-
Yeah, it was a blast.
There was tons of great racing going on, including repeated close battles between Graeme, Don, Juzze and myself on the 125s. Justin had a spectacular crash while leading the second 125 race which put him out of contention, but he's certainly improved a whole lot in the last few events.
The track was actually quite difficult to master - on one hand, a raw novice could learn to ride around on it, but to ride it quickly was actually really tricky. As Shaun said, it put some different people at the front of pack on many occasions. Reversing the direction opened up a lot of new lines, and made passing easier.
Some thoughts/high-lights/observations:
The locals all seemed super cool and friendly. I think that Canowindra has the potential to be another Condobolin (Based on what I've heard about Condo - I never went to a VMX race there).
The event deserved to be A Big Thing. Its different, accessiable and good enough to be. Everyone who was involved in making it happen should be very pleased with how it all went.
Magoo won all of his age races!? I guess he was the only bloke in the 90 years and older class?
Snowy crashed a lot.
Doug won all of his pre-78/age races on Pete B's YZ125X, and was very strong on his YZ490 - but then choked when it really mattered, including three crashes in the one race.
Carl B is fast on a huge variety of bikes, and won a heap of races.
Mike W's Triumph Metisse had a most spectacular DNF when a conrod let go. He was pretty cool about it. His CanAm is very pretty even though it had minor technical dramas.
Nitram was always at the pointy end of his races (including winning a couple, I think) on his 175 Enduro CanAm. He's got an 'old school' riding style - sits down all the time, bolt upright - but it obviously works for him!
Eric yelling good natured abuse at me as he blazed past, early in one of the pre-85 races... Mongrel! I'd just gotten my best ever start, he'd gotten a shocker (by his standards) and then he's got time to rib me, as he goes past in heavy traffic! :D
Woody's stealth passing move on me, right at the end of one of the pre-85 races.
Dave O's many stealth passing moves on me in virtually every pre-85 races. He went past so quickly, I have no idea why he spent so much of the race behind me.
Steve on the pretty standard DT-B was always right at the pointy end of his age races, against a stack of good riders on (supposedly) superior bikes.
The young bloke (sorry, didn't get your name!) on the CR250RC and the DT360 was also impressive. I wasn't too far behind him in the first pre-85 age race, and so I figured that I'd be able to chase him down after warming up. Wrong! He put himself right at the front of the field, miles ahead of me!
Rossco the Turtle.
So yeah, it wasa good race meet! :) x1000
I babbled to Anna like an excited kid, when I got home yesterday. After about half and hour of listening patiently, she said "So you had a good weekend dear?"....
-
Just have to add a couple of my own observations about the racing.
Snowy DID crash a lot on Saturday, I think the 1st corner should be named Snowy's in recognition of this. However, he came out on Sunday with his race face on and from what I saw, was blazing fast. I saw him putting it to a few fast names in one Pre 78 race in particular. Mr KTM, Dennis, was going extra fast in the age races on his 400. He looked super smooth doing it too. Carl B, what can I say, he was very fast and very smooth. I had a ball watching him from the grandstand. Wish I could ride half that good. And as for Nitram on the CanAm, well, I think there needs to be a protest on THAT one. 175 indeed. I think that's gotta be a full works 500 in that unassuming frame. And lastly, yes Magoo DID win his races. And he looked ultra smooth and fast doing it. Who'd have thought the old bloke still had it in him? Most of the time on race days you'd think he was asleep, yet here he is out in front!
Just noticed I described all these fast people as smooth. That was the key - to be fast, you had to work out a way to keep up the speed and the flow. That's smooth. Whereas for me, every corner in every race was a completely new experience. I wouldn't have hit the same line twice all weekend. That's the trick, right there.
-
Good to see Nitram having a blast after the injuries he has sustained in the past --good for him for getting in there with a win. :P
Hope Snowy is ok ths morning and not to bruised 8)
Thanks for the report-glad you had a GOOD ONE !
cheers

I had the Jag warming up in the driveway ready to head for Canowindra when it started pissing down. I went inside, looked at the Weather Channel and got a 'rain all day' forecast so I put the car away and went back to bed. We later went to the Oktoberfest for a soothing few pilseners and some pork buckle with some chums. As much as we enjoyed the Oktoberfest, Canowindra sounded like fun and I'm sorry I didn't go now.....
I feel for Mike after seeing that big hole in his Trumpy engine. Expensive bummer mate!
-
Yes I couldn't agree more with the above posts, I had a great weekend, it was a great track to ride, in both directions, I experienced everything from wining a couple of races, coming last, crashing the RM a couple of times and banging bars with a few riders on the MX360 ;D, a big thanks to Greg and the Heaven Commitee for putting on great race meeting.
-
G,day all

Don

I think this was the best weekend of racing I had for a very long time..
The racing was very close and I mean that when I was washing the old ktm 400 to day and to found tyer marks on bothside of my
back mudgard.
I know that rubbing is racing But shit ..
you could win one race and than run larst in the next .
The track made the evey one equal in some way .
Guys how were fast on saturday were slow on sunday
Snowy 76 had a shiter on saturday and Sunday on fire..
Doug P was 1st and then larst
Nole L was Super Fast on the TT two wheel slide Dirt track style.
Damo had to work very hard and clean up when it was needed well done.
Betric was riding very well.
look I could go on and no so many storys to tell .
the bench racing will go on and on .
Top week end .
Greg well done Mate well Done.
-
Thanks Greg and all the people who worked hard to put the weekend together, would be great as a one off round each year and a pleasant drive to get there and back.
Highlights of the weekend (tongue in cheek)
Me and Browny even did a couple of hot laps around Mt Panorama on the way home getting ready for nexts weekends event. Had the BT50 and Jayco Flight scooting all over the ripple strips, even got it on helmet cam ;D
Now with all the get offs in the slippery after water conditions, it was good no one got physically hurt, only pride took a tumble. The Hondas probably had an unfair advantage, they all had an extra Knob on em :-* ::)
Nathans S (Aka Trophy Hunter, professional shit stirrer but not a bad bloke despite what most people say) winning a trophy only having to hand it back because of a points tally mix up, the gods must still be smiling above :D :D
Bruce Mc (AKA Magoo) winning three from three on saturday, not sure what happened in the finals though, must haved choked like his football team :P gotta feel for the big fella having to go home early with a little tickle in his throat :'( :-*
Dennis (AKA oz555maico) riding quick, reckons he would have been National dirt track champion if the 400 ktm was running this sweet two weeks ago, still needs a win to replace his old KTM jersey and nearly pulled it off on saturday, the win that is :o
Fernando (AKA husky parts) on a mission cutting through the pack unceremoniously blocking all in his path, another to take a pride battering tumble on his clacker :D
Gotta feel for Mike ( AKA dirt trumpy) dropping a conrod on the Metisse, dont think I have ever seen a motor let go as bad as that one and I think Mike held it together extremely well, I would of been swearing and cursing beyond belief. Im sure he would of had a moment when he first looked down to see metal flying in all directions, I was flagging right near it and never heard a bike implode like that before :'(
Snowy was a laff a minute on Saturday, 4 out of 6 races produced get offs, even better when all clubmates keep taking the piss out of you when you walk away with only your pride in tatters. Funny looking at how wide his eyes were opened when youve got the whole field just about to ride over you ;D
Damo Carl Pete & Doug going at it was good to watch, very smooth racing and trading place on regular basis. Carl (czek)putting in an ironman effort, think he rode every race including Juniors at i think 57 years young, really enjoying his riding at the minute ;)

Sad to see such a classic bike let go like that.
The rod certainly did its best to punch its way out.
Commiserations Mike.

Hi
What a weekend, had a ball, thanks for all those people that somehow make it happen. Went to the oval next day at 7am
and Greg was already there running around in the tractor, guy deserves a medal. Thanks again.
I have about 250 photos from the weekend, a lot of good action. should I post them on here or is it just to many. Looking for suggestions. Maybe if you want them I could burn you a cd. Let me know.

Good to see no negative feedback from Canowindra. Anybody that does complain should be shot or bashed with some thing heavy as Greg and Heaven did an outstanding job organizing the event . I for one hope that both Greg and Canowindra will have us back again. I really enjoyed the close racing that a flat track brings and the fact that family and friends could see the entire race from the comfort of a grandstand .There is also a lot to be said for flat camping ground and hot showers. I was surprised though to come around a corner and see what appeared to be a giant turtle on the track there must be something in the water out there.

You guys just crack me up :D Were you there on the weekend Sean, I dont recall seing yo out on the track :-*

Rosco,
Sean was the one rearranging all the white drums during race's,
I could only get there on Saturday and had to head home again straight after racing
but it was worth every Hour on the road,
Had a ball, and thanks to Fernando for the Sponsored ride on the Big Husky, what a weapon that thing is,
Dennis did you save a tee shirt for me ;D

Guys, it would be fantastic if we had the chance to check out Carl's pics. Has anyone got the resources to host them for all to see?
Carl, you could try http://photobucket.com/ and post a link to your pics like on this page;

I would just like to say a personal thanks to Greg. You did yourself, family and town proud. The organisation was brilliant and the help from the community excellent with the event going off very smoothly. Glad to hear there will be another one next year. The racing was fun, good to watch and more often than not close. It was also very safe and easy on the old bodies. What a win win situation. Also congrats to the Heaven committee for going with the idea and to all who supported it.

Awesome, thanks (again) Greg.
I particularly like this pic. No points for guessing who was the hare and who was the tortise in this - but the tortise was in front! ;D

And always grip the bike tightly with your knees!

I remember that race, Snowy fell off at the start, passed you once and was coming around to lap you all in two laps, spectacular piece of riding ;)
-
Nice try Rossco - except that nobody would ever believe that he only fell off once in a race.
(Sorry Snowy... I'm sure we'll all let you live it down one day).
-
only till the next time he falls off ;D
He has turned into some one you don't want to follow in case you end up running over him ::)
