I have purchased a years subsription to "Moto Retro Illustrated". After I sent my money I received an email back from the editor Mitch saying thanks for the support etc. I've tried to contact them to enquire about when I might receive issue 1 by replying to Mitch's email and through the contacts on their site but my emails keep bouncing back as undeliverable.
So 3 questions:
Has anyone else purchased a subscription and received issue 1?
Is anyone else having trouble contacting them?
Does anyone know of another way to contact them apart from email?
Lets hope all is well and it's just a glitch in the system.
-
We subscribed and paid -but it hasn't come out of our bank account yet..
Perhaps they may be waiting on numbers-we may also end up with a limited edition subscription ;)
cheers
-
Hi Alison/Steve, money is definately out of my account, lets hope all is well and it's just a delay in postage.
-
I too subscribed a few weeks ago for a year, I still haven't received my first issue , I did email Mitch a couple of days ago and here is his response.
Hi Mark, if you subscribed in the last few weeks, your issue will be mailed shortly, if you subscribed a while back you should have it by now, let me know and I'll look into it for you, Thanks Mitch.
What concerns me is that I haven't heard of anybody with the first edition yet, maybe any of our fellow USA readers maybe able to tell us if the first issue has surfaced yet over there ???
-
What the hell was your rush ? His last effort went arse-up after three isues.
-
I'm in the same boat, paid my subscription months ago, no magazine in the mail yet...
-
According to posts on their facebook page issues have been sent out in the US. I have sent a message via facebook to Mitch and Jim West, I'll wait to hear back and let you know.
-
Received my Moto Retro Illustrated issue #1 today. (Melbourne post code).
Seems to have come via New Zealand for some reason. Quite damaged which is dissapointing.
Only browsed the photo's at this stage but looks to have some interesting content.
Graeme.
-
yay, mine arrived today as well, came from New Zealand ??
-
Hi Guys,
Just spoke to Mitch and he appologies for all the delays in delivery. He took a fall from his CR480 and ended up in intensive care with some broken ribs, broken collar bone and a punctured and collapsed lung.
Not surprisingly this has slowed the mail out progress. He indicated that if you subscribed before Aug 10, your copies are in the post [you should have them by now].
If you subscribed after Aug 10 then your copies left on Friday.
If you don't receive your copies, please email him: [email protected] and he will fix it personally.
-
Wow, important safety tip people....
DON'T start up a Vintage Motorcycle Magazine!
(those who don't know, I also ended up in hospital with a broken back, ribs and punctured lung four days before we purchased VMX :o)
-
Geez, that's nasty. Those big bores can bite hard eh?
I got my copy Friday, not bad at all. I like the broad mix. My favourite articles are the ELR one and the genesis of the Monsoshock Yamaha. Nearly tempted to buy Terry Good's book now! How good do those original Kawi superbikes look, huh? If I were much richer than I am I'd grab me a new ZRX1200, they look the goods.
-
What better reason for missing work than crashing a CR480, eh? :D
What was it that got you, Ajay? Wasn't it some girly trials bike or something? ;D ;D ;D ;D
Sorry mate.............. ;)
-
No I was bitten by what I still consider to be the best off road motorcycle ever produced - the KTM200. ;)
Unfortunately, my riding ability was nowhere near good enough to ride it at the speed it was capable of and remain in control. ::)
-
Yeah, I know what you mean........... :-\
I crap myself if I hit anything bigger than a cigarette butt these days............... ::)
-
I haven't got my copy yet so it must be coming this week.....I hope.
I lost all of my heart and bravado when I endoed from my DT1 in 1999. I've never been able to ride anywhere near as fast again. Whereas jumps had never previously bothered me, now anything bigger than my driveway now scares the shitter out of me. I've had far worse crashes before and since that particular one but it's the one that damaged my psyche preventing me from even thinking of racing hard again. It turned me into a big nancy boy chicken. :o
-
Well, at least you had the trigger to make you chicken. I was born that way! Jumps... whoa. I just cannot ever tell my hand to twist the throttle any harder than a poofteenth off idle when i get to a jump... And yet, it hasn't helped at all in regard to avoiding injury, cos I've had far too many painful ones the past few years.
Maybe I should just take up spectating, reading VMX and Moto Retro, and telling the young uns how fast I used to be...
-
Thats what I love about this place, you never know which way the treads are going to go… Always makes for interesting reading.
And Graeme, how do you catch the youngsters to tell 'em how fast you were… they are too quick
Ahhh, the glory of old [older] age.
VMX42
P.S. And Tony, I don't think the V-strom [or whatever it was called] is smaller than a cigarette butt…
-
You need to learn how to tuck and roll Graeme!
-
Look, I know this is a thread highjack but that's what I like about forums, the meandering nature of threads.
Tuck and roll... I used to be an expert at this, and managed to avoid injury almost every crash. But lately... It all started on my HL500. In this 4-stroke race I got a burst of testosterone and took off as fast as I could go. For the first half a lap I think I was in the lead and then Roy Gay snuck by. I thought, hey I think I can stay with him. I thought that just moments before for some unknown reason the thing threw me flat on my back and winded me. What the? No warning, no nothing. Just bang.
Not much later I was on my Husky 500 at ACT and it was a wet race. I was going OK in some race, maybe an Over 35s or something, and as I approached a jump it happened again. Bang. Flat on my back, winded. WTF? Investigation later revealed some lousy little branch just under the mud. As soon as the back wheel hit it the bike just went sideways and highsided me, flat on my back against the jump face.
OK, so those were just unusual crashes, no time to tuck and roll. You'd think from then on things would be fine, but no.
A little later I am racing my 05 YZ125 at the Coopers Gully grasstrack. It's a cold and off the start my specs fogged up and I couldn't see a thing. So, back right off, so far I am in last place. Dimly I can see this little V-shaped gully and I know I am gonna go slow through it, but I am not sure if there are guys behind me, so I go way left. Bang, I'm flat on my face with a sore hand. No warning at all. There was this great big rock just offline that I hit with the front wheel. It was so sudden that my hand was caught between the grip and clutch lever, splitting the bone. OK, that really hurt but good old TwistandShout convinced me I could keep riding if I taped it up.
Sure I can. So, a few races later I reckon I can do that. Into the first corner and some guy goes down. This time, I have the time to tuck and roll, except that the guys bike follows me and ankle taps me as I go over the top. Down I go, whacking the SAME hand. The ambulance guy just shook his head as I lay there moaning...
This is why spending my days reading VMX and Moto Retro and watching vintage motocross just may be the better option!!!
-
Graeme I know what you mean about the crashes becoming quicker. I remember a crash going something like this.
You feel the bike starting to go, you get a foot down and try to steady things, move the body to one side, try and fight it, you keep on trying to stay upright and even as you fall you manage to get an arm out or tuck and roll then you go down. It all used to happen in slow motion.
Now days I'm riding along (or doing my impersonation of racing) and then I'm laying on the ground and waiting to see what is hurting! I seem to miss out on all the stages in between!
But on the bright side I suppose there's no longer any worry about the embarrassment of falling off, just a sense of relief when I can get up and walk away.

Yes, injuries can sure slow down productivity, almost as much as buying another bike ::)
A couple of years ago some mates were racing in Viper at Barrabool so I thought I would go along & pit for them. Dave rang me on the Saturday & said bring your riding gear along & ride one of the bikes in some races. I thought nah, don't want to hop on a strange bike (a Maico ;D) & try to go race pace.
Nup, got too much work on, just cant' afford any injuries at the moment. I'll be fine just videoing some races.
Well, got down their & the rain was coming down sideways so didn't dare get the camera's out of the car.
Helped push the ambulance out of the pits at one stage.
Not long after I fell in the mud & snapped my ankle.
It still all happened in slow motion though ;D
-
arrived yesterday-better half stole it off me,probably cause I was on here ::)
love it
cheers Alison
-
Mine arrived last week, looks like a great mag.
-
Has anyone got issue #2 of Moto Retro yet? It was supposed to come out in November and here we are almost in March and still zip. I complained like buggery about issue #1 taking so long and got some bullshit story blaming DHL for the mail delays but 3 fu*king months(September-December) to get here is a joke.
Now we have issue#2 also three months late.
Methinks Moto Retro will soon be Moto Deado for the second time. This shits me, you just can't treat subscribers like this in such a tight market, there are plenty of other places for them to spend their subscription money. Issue #1 showed promise but I think it's about to join Mark Thompsons Classic Bike Rider (CBR) in dead magazine hell.
-
On his website Mitch reckons he's fallen behind and it went to the printers late January. He seemed to think it'd be out mid Feb, but there's been no update since. My guess is it's fallen a little behind even that schedule. It looks like it's a wing and a prayer undertaking, possibly more prayer than wing at that. His injuries from that crash put him behind and I don't think he's yet managed to get back on track. I don't have a problem with that sort of thing but he probably could do with letting his subscribers know!
-
Your next VMX will be out in a week or three... ;D
-
The difference is that we can live without Moto Retro...
-
The cheque's in the mail Graeme... ;)
-
::)
-
Geez I am a subscriber and I am getting very toey for issue #2 as well but give Mitch a chance after all he has gone solo on his effort without big publishers backing him, from what I have read with his previous 4 efforts it's one of the best mags around, equal if not better than VMX and I subscribe to that too, he also had a pretty big get off on his bike a few months ago which sent issue #2 miles behind, he gives updates on his facebook page and from what I read on it he has sent issue #2 out to subscribers yesterday.I hope it continues ???
-
anyone recieved #2 yet of Moto Retro
http://www.motocrossdigital.com/
another one gone by the way side...really got to market yourself and stay out in front these days.
cheers
-
Im really happy that I took out a 1 year subscription to this mag, received one issue (late) and a bunch of lame duck excuses ever since.

I understand how difficult it is to put out a niche market magazine without serious financial backing and big corporate advertising but Mitch is blowing it bigtime here. Even if we get our five month late issue#2 this week, the ability to attract future subscribers and advertisers is now seriously compromised. With the mythical issue #2 being so far behind schedule who'd want to fork out for a 12 month sub or pay for advertising knowing that we could possibly never see another issue? I feel a bit sorry for Mitch but he must have gone into this both seriously under funded and under staffed which had him behind the 8 ball even before issue #1 was released.
I'm also glad I've only got a one year sub.
-
Yeah starting to think us subscibers have been stooged >:( pity really his previous efforts were excellent reading , I heard him getting interviewed just last week on the net, reckons he has 3,500 subscribers and climbing each week ??? I suppose if it does bit the dust the one and only issue will be a collectors item :-\
-
Mitch Boehm is an extremely well regarded and respected moto journalist with decades under his belt at Cycle World and running Motorcyclist. He has spent years building his integrity and I highly doubt he’s stooging anyone. I know two things from him directly; he had a big off while doing issue 1 that set him back weeeeeeks (which has set back issue 2 weeks as well), and he’s basically getting buy on freelance work and his wife’s salary.
Doesn’t sound like a pyramid scheme to me.
Anyhoo, issue one was so good I read it twice, one time without moving my lips even… so I’m happy to wait for number 2.
-
I agree with you on Mitches abilities as a journo Rudy but was merely thinking out aloud about it now being hard for him and Moto Retro to catch up after falling so far behind. The accident came at the worst possible time in a new magazines life which undoubtedly set a downward spiral in motion. I don't think Mitch's duping anyone and really hope he can pull it out of the shit as I reckon it's the only magazine that can even come close to VMX as far as quality of content and production values. To save it all, Issue #2 needs to be on the shelves pretty damn quick.
-
There may be a ray of hope, Soup had a pic of the front cover of #2 on recently, a pic of Kenny Roberts with his 1978 title-winning 500.
-
Small world- my Husky mate from the big smoke sent me this ;D

Have you seen the photo of king kenny's museum out back of his house in amcn, plenty of fine looking machinery in there
-
Issue 2 is now on sale, bought mine this morning from England. Issue 1 is also still available. ;D
-
I finally got my Moto Retro #2 and you know what? It's very good. The Kenny Roberts and DT1 pieces are great but my favourite is a nostalgic piece on my favourite ever motocross track, Carlsbad. The quality and content are great and if he can get back on schedule, should have a good future. It's got a different vibe to VMX and CDB so it fits right in for those punters who like both dirt and road/race bikes and personalities.
-
Got my copy today down mexico way, It,s been worth the wait, lots of good reading,I hope mitch can keep it going, there is an interesting add towards the back, some mob called ottoco who do repro dg heads amongst other things,I tried googling them to check,em out but the website is not finished yet , there stuff looks top quality
-
Got ours today way out west.
Nice long interesting articles on other people. 8)

Just signed up and wanted to thank those of you who hung in there, waited patiently for issue two, and didn't throw me under the bus like so many others here. That sort of behavior seems to dominate the forums I've been on; amazing to read sometimes. Working on issue three now, and I'm sure you'll dig it. All sorts of '60s/'70s/'80s mx and street stuff, including a motocross roots piece you'll really like - Edison Dye, J. Robert, DeCoster, Larsson, etc and an event that got mx started here in the U.S. (Of course, judging by some of the posts on this site, America is still a hated place populated only by buck-toothed, ignorant southerners. Whatever.)
Thanks again, and if you need to reach me, my email is below.
Best,
Mitch

Glad to see you made it to the checkered flag.
America is still a hated place populated only by buck-toothed, ignorant southerners. Whatever.)
It’s not that we hate Americans, quite the opposite, but we do get annoyed with the ones that think Australia is some communist country in Europe or a town in Honduras
-
Just referring to Mr. Evil's tiring rant, is all...
;-)
-
Mitch.
I'm not just American; I'm from New York - that's like a double dose of paranoia and guilt.
Difference between me and 100 million other americans? I learned that Paris wasn't just in Texas and that Sydney isnt in Nebraska...
It’s also the irony in my postings, given I live amongst my fellow Australian here in Sydney ( 18 years).
Once in a while we get to laugh at some of the high jinks our old compatriots get up to and “take the piss” when it doesn’t gel with the laid back laconic lifestyle here.
Even you have to laugh at some of the stupid shit that rolls out of US of A.
And of course I actually defended you in this thread, so be kind.
Glad issue two is out, can’t wait for number three. They are both the only magazines I’ve read cover to cover three times since I was a kid and bought my first MXA.
I’ve still got a year and a half left on my subscription.

Plus - and lets make this perfectly clear - I drink way too much Scotch when I'm typing.
-
Re: Too much Scotch...
I know the feeling. ;-)
I guess I've just tired of all the U.S.-bashing. Some is warranted, of course. But the idiocy of some of it is, well, tiring. Yours was funny and clever; guess I just used too big a hammer when commenting on it.
Really happy you've read the issue completely; that's the sort of response I'm getting from readers all over the world. It really helps the personal motivation to keep this ship floating. Issue three is gonna be cool. Please let me know what you think of it. (And somehow I know you will.)
Thanks,
Mitch

I dunno about the US bashing Mitch - we Aussies cop a bit of flack on the US forums too at times! And Geez, don't they like to give Chad Reed a serve. The thing of it is that there are often no shortage of people happy to fill the role of stereotype. ;D
And yes, Issue #2 is a beauty. Looking forward to #3 now (although to be honest I still haven't finished #2 - that Roberts interview is a top read).
