Decided to get the 84 500 back together , as I ratted parts for the 85 (front brakes) and 83 ( rear guard). plus it had heaps of dust from sitting, so I gave it a wash. Then I thought I would get them together for a bit of a photo shoot. Just thought I'd share.
When lined up it just shows you how many parts DONT interchange from one to the next. I always here the 70's had huge changes in bikes but there are plenty of differences in these three year models, thats for sure.
Nothing from an 83 interchanges. The wheels, front end and bottom end parts will interchange between the 84 and 85.

they look the go Brad i reckon they would go alright too thanks Michael. :)
-
Great pics Brad and i love those 3 models you have. i love this era. its a great collection in itself.
85 & 86 are the beasts of the Honda big bore range, after that they mellowed them done (and rightly so) to make them easier to ride.
the 86' is close to the 85 but lots of small changes as well once you look into it, 87 onwrds are different again.
Thanks for posting them up
-
Very cool, very nice, thanks for sharing the photos.
-
ya bloody show off! :o nice as always though Brad ;)
-
Hoony - I thought the urban legend was that the 84 was the greatest ever Honda big bore?
Rossco

how could you forget the 82 geeez ::)

-
even though it is has one hear less than the 83 i reckon it looks a lot better that is a beast caps get that mugen on there :)
-
still wait on my me kit frosty its on the way down from merry old england
-
and wicked bikes brad ;D once i get my 450 together should get them all side by side at the next classic dirt for a photo
-
oh you will be waiting a long time from england i always seem to
-
Nice Caps but it needs a trick shock :-)
-
I have an 81 and 82 but they need restoring. They are a fair way down the list as well. I will be updating the 83 pic's when i get the trick forks on and the Mugen kit re-plated and fitted .
Here are the forks. Never seen internals like this before. It was pointed out to me that the bottoms seem to be magnessium as they are very light.

-
they look like something differnt thats for sure
-
Those forks are interesting. The top cap with adjuster looks exactly like the aftermarket White Power fork kits available in the early 80's although i thought the knobs were red not blue.
-
brad when you were running it did you notice any power differnce with the mugen kit
-
I haven't put it on yet. I have to get it re nicasiled. That is how i bought it.
The ports are bigger and finished well.

ok sweet i pick up a me 460 and 480 kit but the 480 kits gunna take a bit of work needs welding and plating so im gunna try the 460 kit first apperatly there an improment on stock so ill see how we go
-
Caps i presume the 460 kit is for the '81 450.. Are you fitting it to a 480?
Did you have much trouble tracking down the kits?
-
So you are going to put the 460 kit on the 480. If you want to move it on,I would buy it off you when you put the 480 kit on.
-
yeh the 460 kit is nos too i might even leave it as a 460 as it should smothen the band a little
-
i actually found it quite easy finding 460 kit the 480 one was impossible and i have a spare me460 barrel here brad it will need replating motomanaic has first dibs i believe but i will be selling that one
-
No worries. I take it no head? Keep me in the queue.
-
yeh no head i got 2 kits one nos no head and one used with new piston and head and used barrel so made one new kit from 2
-
Very very nice collection, I can understand the addiction. How are you finding getting parts?
The evos were an exciting time, each year had a new experiment and the manufactures were going mad trying to out do each other. Buying a magazine each month had some new to offer. From the 50ies to the mid 70ties innervation was going from a BSA side valve to a two stroke east euro engine and shockys on the rear. Man is that comment going to cause a stir. ::) No harm meant. :)
From 1989 down the CR open class bikes changed heaps but I think you have the most varied between bike you have.
Today it’s bikes are just different color plastics. I was horrified with the suspicion put forward on the BMW when it came out, shame they didn’t progress with Knight. I think the Husaberg has had the modern community gob smacked.
-
Parts are a bit hard to come by. I have asked on several forums about replacement conrod kits for the 480 but no one can answer me on that. The 85 rod will fit the 84 but i think they are all thin on the ground as well.
I think that is why some euro bikes are easier to get parts for, as they dont change so much every year.
You spend a bit of time on the cr500 forum if i remember correctly.
Im getting my alloy framed 500 sorted at the moment as it will be my modern ride. Its got the David Bailey kit on it so it will not be out of place with these girls.
-
Brad,
I haven't found info on a replacement con rod yet. Sorry about the delay. (I started the CR480 Yahoo Group)
I have 2 rebuilt CR480s on the shelf with new rods in them and 2 NOS con rods in their bags. I know someone who had rods made for his RM500 and I'm sure it wasn't cheap. Maybe someday we can have a batch made, if enough of us will order them. (That's why I'm holding on to the NOS rods)
;)
How does the 84 CR500 compare to the 83 CR480?
-
I dont think there is such a thing as a replacement unfortunately. There is a definite market there.
The yahoo group seems to be fairly active.
The 84 has a narrower band and hits hard so it feels like it goes harder. The 83 has a broad band so is very easy to ride.
The Mugen kit is supposed to make a big difference. I hope it still has the same characteristics as the standard barrel.
-
if not brad id be happy to take it off your hands ;D

I normally blast round the CR500 forum; the Yanks are a different breed but not a bad bunch of blokes. An AF 500 conversion would be sweet, I may consider that myself one day. Having the 500 two banger is a modern frame has a certain appeal.
I have read comments from dudes that have one and they recon gen Y reaction is priceless while they way up a 250 two stroke compare it to there 450, 4 stoke then the vacant look of what tha and say Oh.
Do you have an engine, black or silver?
-
It has an '01 motor in it. I painted it black to keep with the old school theme. The conversion was already done, i have grafted later model plastics and am personalizing it a bit.
-
ive got a almost finish 500 af that will be for sale soon 2003 crf450 frame 98 cr motor

Late model is the go; Honda solved many issues with the later donks and tuned to a low pipe. I suppose you have seen but AJ from Service Honda has a Bailey replica style looks rather nice and an Elsinore silver version as well. Even though I prefer the old school look, I must admit I like Elsinore, quite sexy.

Sorry to hear you are going to sell, if I wasn’t in a different situation I would look at it. I need a rego bike and the wife has given permission for new bike late next year and no $ limit mentioned yet, so at the moment my eye is on the KTM690 all rounder. :)
-
Pretty much finished the modern with a big old school flava! I'm going to have to put it on a dyno. This thing has too much power. Last photo is how I bought it but its hard to see. Dont know how to make it bigger.

If red is not your colour, then try this one.
When we do club days i drag out the KATOOM and me best mate brings along NO21, a KX250/500 hybrid. No points for guessing who's bike it was. When i get a chance i'll get a side shot.

Ah, Traralgon.. haven't ridden there for a while. The big KX would be just the ticket out of some of those sandy berms...

I am a bloody show off for sure. Back in the day a mate came to watch me ride. I said watch me do the double! I came up short, left the track and went over the bars, dislocating my elbow! But you cant keep a show off down. ::)
The big debut is today. Keeping the two stroke dream alive.
-

Stanmore was closed but i stumbled on a track at Jimboomba. They were raising money by riding for 24 hours. I donated some money and got to ride. Went back and rode last night under lights. Had a ball.
