For anyone possibly wondering what this is in reference to, for well over 10 years Bazza and I have have bet a t shirt on the result of the annual Bledisloe Cup. He's wearing more Aussie shirts than me wearing Kiwi ones unfortunately. There's a Nationals shirt enroute Bazza. You were lucky bucko!
Rugby --probably the blue team
Wrong rugby code Alison. This is proper Rugby, Wallabies v All Blacks, not the other game.
Thanks for the nice words in the PM. Same back at ya. Sorry we never got much of a chance to chat, I didn't get to socialise much at all being stiuck in the tower most of the weekend.
-
South Africa for a Tri Nations win . Mark how about a bet on the Tri Nations, you win I send you a South African VMX t shirt, we win you send me a t shirt from one of your events?

Firko, the result was never in doubt.
Seven years and counting mate...

And to Quote Drakie "and 4 inches in the rear" :D :D

What are our chances of winning anything, with a kiwi in charge. ;)
Hope there are no poms on the forum, next thing the cricket will be on the agenda.
On a positive note , the Maroon team won the "other" rugby ;D ;D ; Sorry Firko seems you can't win a trick.
-
Yep it's been a pretty ordinary year for my sporting affiliations. My beloved Rabbitoes dumped out of the semis on the weekend and now I wake to see that the Cricket nancy boys have let us down again. All I have left is dear old Randwick in the rugby. They've never let me down......yet.
Mark how about a bet on the Tri Nations
Jeez Gavin...that's a sucker bet if ever I saw one ;D. The Springboks are unbackable favourites and the Wallabies haven't won a game. I think I'll pass.
-
What a game :-[ who owes who a shirt :-X

WANTED GOOD CDI FOR AUSSIE TEAM god only knows they need a little spark but the Broncos won hey hey

Rugby? Yawwwwnnnnn! The Saints v The Cats Grand Final . Should be a cracker. :D

Rugby? Yawwwwnnnnn! The Saints v The Cats Grand Final . Should be a cracker. :D
Gotta disagree on the yawn.
I was a ticket holder at the Brisbane Lions for about six or seven years (including the 3 in a row Premierships) and rarely missed a home game.
But I've given that seat the flick in favour of Rugby Union season tix for the Queensland Reds.
It's just not my game; I've tried but I can't get excited or care enough to watch it on the telly - except the Grand Final.
That's always good with beers at a mates BBQ.
And I've been to two Grand Finals - saw the Hawks beat the Eagles at Waverley and Adelaide beat the Saints at the MCG.
But after all this time I'm buggered if I understand the Aussie Rules version of a 'tackle'... that bear hug thing from behind.
AFL is an OK sport but it's unknown outside Australia - and don't even think about including that weird-arse hybrid game we play against the Irish!
And Rugby Union is global - it's massive!
For TV popularity it trails slightly behind the Soccer World Cup and the Olympics coverage.
But each to their own. And I'll be hoping for a Sainters win as I stand around with a beer at a BBQ...

Rugby is by far the best of the oval ball games, but the modern version is pretty boring and predictable. All the field play is just 'what they do' to while away the time waiting for the next penalty kick.
Change the point scoring system [1 point for a penalty] and bring back a running game with the occasional kick… [not the other way around].
Awaiting the abuse…

Hallelujah......I couldn't agree more Jeff . As a 27 year veteran of playing Rugby I find myself being further drawn into enjoying Rugby League more because of the pedantic kickfest that Rugby has become. The Rugby League scoring system would be the first thing I'd introduce to Rugby.
-
Firko,
You might be able to fix the scoring problems in Rugby, but you will never get the League guys to pack a scrum. They may as well just pass the ball straight to the 5/8 and stop wasting time.
God knows what they do while they are packed down. I can imagine the hookers chatting about what pub they are going to after the game - heaven knows they don't have anything else to do. Its just embarrassing and goodness knows what the players think of it - can't be good for the tough-man image…

P.S. whatever happened with those Dutch twinshock things???? HaHa!!
-
Wombat never got over the 2004 drubbing of the Lions by the MIGHTY PORT POWER in the final ;D
-
Jeff...This has to stop now!..ya hear!!! I can't stand it, agreeing with you again! Even my 90 year old mother throws things at the telly whenever the League blokes "pack down" for a scrum, screaming something about "Bumper Farrell rolling in his grave". What a f**king wank that is. I agree, both codes have their issues but they're still infinitely more watchable than the other oval ball codes to me. I was channel surfing today and managed to flick onto the Giants v Cowboys American NFL game and in half an hour I managed to witness 8 minutes of actual football.
-
we won the netball though ;D
-
OK Firko,
Just to restore some degree of normalcy…
"God I Love those wacky Dutch Twinshockers!!"
Happy now??

-
Sorry Wombat but if you are going to follow the Wobblies, and the not so dirty Reds, I'm sure you'll be a convert to the "Working Class" game of league by 2011.
My opinion is that Tackling Technique seems confusing for Union players as well.

Right Jeff, with a statement like that, and you wanting the penalty dropped down to 1 point it would be worth giving you a good rucking and maybe even an upper cut in the scrum ;) ;D ..... no maybe a good stiff arm late tackle. ;D ;D

It just so happens I was a passionate League follower before the whole 'Super League' debacle.
Hey I'm a Queenslander! It wasn't until I joined the Army and left the State I learned not everyone plays League - who knew?!
But I still watch the State of Origin and the Internationals (my teams win ;)) and the Grand Final, but rarely a League game in between.
To me League is the predictable one of the rugby codes: five tackles and kick, five tackles and kick, five tackles and .......... ad infinitum!!
And don't the crowd howl in protest should any player be so stupid as to kick on anything other than the last tackle!!
Stoppages? Are you kidding me? After every league tackle the two sides stop to line up and face off again!
Kicking aside, in Union the game will continue on and on - until someone finally cheats in the ruck.
But I will wholeheartedly agree on that waste of time we call a League scrum... ::) >:( ??? what the hell is that about?
Bring back the contest of a scrum - or just throw it up and make them jump for it, but pls p1ss off that pale copy of a pack of 'Forwards'!
Sorry... I've banged on enough - we can chat about gang tackles some other time. ;)

both forms of rubgy isn't it a case of 1 guy with funny ears pushing 2 other guys up three guys bums or something like that???? Suppose I shouldn't mention that I am a Collingwood supporter at this point eh! ::)

Not after last weekend, you shouldn't, Ross.
And anyway, I thought Collingwood supporters were into that sort of thing. They do it to opposition supporters every weekend, even when they win :D :D

I aplaud you Rossco for being a West Aussie and at least knowing that there are two Rugby codes ;). A relative in Adelaide has lived all of his 50 odd years not realising that both Rugby Union and Rugby League existed as seperate entities. This same bloke can rattle off trivia and stats about AFL and SAFL ad infinitum but hadn't bothered to even notice the difference between the Rugby codes even though he watched both the State of Origin and Rugby test matches on the telly. It became apparent to me when he asked why George Cregan hadn't been picked for the State of Origin series. ::)
-
Firko, Ceorge who ? I'm from SA. :-*
-
Firko, Ceorge who ? I'm from SA
Exactly!....... ;D
I don't mean it as a put down on anybody in SA but use the example to explain the different prorities we give to footy. Whereas in the AFL states there is no other code of footy we here in NSW generally have an interest in all codes even though Rugby League is the most popular due to the historic origins of the sport, the average New South Welshman (and Queenslander I'd assume) is fully aware of the other codes and watches them all with some interest. As well as being a season ticket holder of the NSW Blues Super 14 Rugby team and a longtime member of Randwick Rugby(http://www.randwickrugby.com.au/rugby/news-and-events (http://www.randwickrugby.com.au/rugby/news-and-events)), I'm also a member of South Sydney Rabbitoes Rugby League and often attend Sydney Swans games. Most of my mates are of the same line of thinking but to talk to South Aussies and Victorians about anything besides their precious AFL and their eyes glaze over, not having a clue what you're talking about.
That's why the Rugby League stuffed up thinking they can get a League team up and running in Adelaide. They're just not interested. Sure the Storm have a following in Melbourne but it's subsidised by News Limited and can only achieve 12-15000 fans to a regular game which is piss poor when compared to AFL support. The Western Force Rugby Union team are succeeding in WA due I suspect to the high number of expat Poms, Kiwis and South Africans living there. If the club had to rely on indidgenous Sandgropers I fear they'd be in strife.
As a fan of both codes of Rugby I'd be pretty pissed off having to sit up 'til midnight to watch a game on free to air telly if I lived in Adelaide whereas AFL gets prime time here in NSW and Qld. What I don't understand is that while we in NSW and Qld enjoy all of the codes, why are the AFL states so blinkered towards one code only? I guess it's something for the urban anthropologists to work out.
-
Firko, Ceorge who ?
But after all that, I still didn't get an answer :D
PS having attended the World Cup in 06, the recent Bledisloe Cup in Sydney and having had to foorgo my tickets to State of Origin in Brisbane lately, I think I can say that South Aussies do recognise other ball sports exist and enjoy them as spectacles. Its just that we don't have the quality on our doorstep (sorry, United) except in AFL. :( You can only blame the Rugby codes for that.
-
I epitomise Firko's statement - I think there is only one form of football and the best team there is Collingwood - (just having a bit of a lean time at the moment????). Other codes............................??????
Rossco :D

Having lived "most" of my life in Vic, I'd say it's due to a number of factors Firko. One, AFL stemmed from the VFL and VFA competitions and once a upon a time, you could actually go to the suburb of the team and watch them play - that creates an ideal of ownership for the people who live there. I grew up with Essendon as my closest team and had a few players as teachers as well - that formulated who I was going to barrack for. The other reason is MARKETING and to this end, it has been done well.
Apart from the Melbourne Storm, rugby is just another ballsport. To the majority of Vics, rugby is just a game that some expats play in a local park during winter - nothing more, nothing less.
Prior to the shift of South Melbourne to form the Sydney Swans (and subsequently Fitzroy to Brisbane), aussie rules was probably much the same in the northern states.
I suppose I was lucky enough to have a great PE teacher in high school who introduced me to many sports, one of them rugby (in both forms!).
I'm willing to bet there are a few more like me, but not sure I'd hold my breath waiting for them to come out of the woodwork!!

Ah.....the penny drops. Gregan with a G! It's ironic that a South Aussie caught me out. Take a drive up to Christies Beach and try and enlighten Brian for us...I don't think the two codes message quite got through. ;D

Yes a good half back, but the man who's shoes he had to fill was possibly the best half back the rugby world has ever seen.

DJ, you're referring to Nick Farr-Jones I take it? You realise he's an Aussie, right? :o
Mate, when the kiwis on the forum read what you've just said you'll be banished from the land of the long white cloud!
You'll be the Salman Rushdie of New Zealand!
Call me when you get here - I'll arrange somewhere for you to hide... ;)
-
I've gotta agree with you DJ....Nick Farr-Jones was one helluva halfback. We could do with a bit of his or Georgie Gregans brilliance at scrum half right now.
-
Wombat, as a kiwi I'm allowed to say how good an Aussie rugby player was now that he has retired, but if he was still playing, now that would be a different story ;) ...... ;D
I dont know what it is about rugby union in these professional times, it just doesnt have the true passion of the sport(well for me it doesnt) like it used too. The players of today just dont seem to have the same passion as the players of yesteryear. I remember seeing Phillipe Sella catching a high kick under his own posts with the all black forward pack arriving at the same time. He took the ball and never let it go which would've given away certain try straight in front, but did give the penalty away. When he finnally got up from the rucking his rugby jersey was in threads. That took balls, passion and for the love of "the game", or what ever you want to call it, but it didnt take money??
It seems that all national teams seem to be struggling in the half-back position, and yet it doesnt seem that long ago when we had players like Sid Going, Mark Loveridge, Mark Donaldson and Andrew Donald.
I was luckly enough to get taught (as a half-back and first five) by Mark Donaldson and Bob Burgress. Today I look at how 'they'(todays' players) pass a ball and just shake my head.
I remember well the day the Irish had Aussie on the back foot in the world cup(I sat up late) and I just thought to myself ..... what ever you do, dont let Champese get the ball. What happens.......Try in the corner.
Players and Captains,
For NZ to be a world force in rugby again we need a leader. A leader like Nick Farr-Jones, Buck Shelford, Martyn Johnston...... Leaders by example.
Now I well need that place to hide Wombat...... ;D ;D
-
All quite at castle de firko
Did you manage to get to the maroons and blues Vets game held last night ?? Those players body sizes haven't change with age. Just watch a flik on the news..looks like it was a good game !!
cheers A
-
I didn't even know it was on until it was over. I saw a bit on the news but watching a bunch of old Leaguies huffing and puffing around the paddock wouldn't have been much of a priority in my house I'm afraid. ;D
