Is it worthwhile converting a TS125 into a TM125? If so what needs doing and roughly what's it going to cost if I'm building it to race mx not restore. Thanks
-
sell the ts and buy a tm and save the head fark!!!
-
I agree, just buy a TM
-
and the other thing is it will have a higher resale value when you go to sell it compered to a tsm125 faker and a lot easier to sell
-
I agree aswell try for a genuine tm i am stil trying to find a tm400 i can but wont make one out of a ts the most appealing part about owning vintage bikes is they are what they are why make a motocrosser out of a enduro i have resolved to the fact if I cant get a genuine tm400 i dont want one id prefer an original ts any day over a un original bike thanks Michael.
-
A TS125 can be modded to dust off TM125's but it really does depend on few things
1. mechanical knowlege (ie. - the cases will need to be split for some mods)
2. parts availablity (TM parts that is)
3. patience (because it won't happen anywhere near as quick compared to simply hunting down a TM instead)
4. you need to be a little fanatical about the TS125's in the first instance ;)
the ingredients you will need are,
From , either a complete motor as it's a bolt in swap or a TM125 Cylinder/head, Gear clusters or donor bottom end, TM125 Stator and CDI, TM or similar pipe and a decent carb. The rest basically comes down to serious you want to be with it. Alloy TM wheels swap over as do early RM but then there in not an overly huge amount of weight difference between the steel or alloy. 21' front wheel is a little more desirable then the stock 19'. Forks if the steel lower jobs could be replaced with some later items from either a TM/TS/TF125/100 or whatever else has 30mm tubes. Replacing the headset for a TM item is purely asthetical as the TS items weigh less but don't look as trick as TM. TM clamps require some mods to the stops also in order to fit. TM pipe more or less bolts straight on as does cylinder/head/gear clusters/carb. The motors run best using a simple pod type filter so ditch the stock airbox. The rest is simply fiddling with little things to suit yourself. Not really a difficult thing to do but you do need the parts availablity ;) Keep in mind the TS125MX has been around in kit form 2 years longer than any TM125 so it really can be classed as a VMXer. If you wanted to race a Suzuki 125 in mx in '71/'72 the TS was the only available option.

this TS below has become my fav 'pre78 ride bike and is much quicker all round than the TM125. It may well dust off early case/reed RM125's also :o I can't complain about handling as again, it feels quicker to ride then the TM. For mine it feels like the quickest piston port 125 I've ever ridden. I also own a TM125 and RM125B/C for comparison and it also feels quicker than the RM ;D I did utilize RM125S engine parts though not TM hence it's pre'78 not pre'75 ;)

Really does depend on the list of ingredients you have available. For most simply buying a TM is the better option but if you've some time for a project then the TS can probably be made into something a little better than a TM ;)

Thanks Doc! Nice bikes you've got there, looks like a lot of blood sweat and tears have gone into them. Anyone know how much a race ready (not a show bike) TM125 and 250 would roughly go for these days?
-
Thanks Dave, my guess for race ready mainstream TM125 would be around the $2000-$2500. Unsure with the 250 as they're not as common but probably closer to $3000-3200 or more. If you hunt around you may come up with something a bit cheaper under 2000 but chances are you'd have do some work to have it up to scratch.
-
Dave,i started flat tracking on a TSM125,TS125 with TM head,& barrell, std pipe, not sure about the box, think it's w/ratio?,i got a spare cluster with the bike ,so never bothered to check,it's got the TS flywheel (huge),but hey the inertia carrythrough the corners??,it's still fun which everway you go,resale value, shit guys he hasn't built it yet,let alone sell it,(get a life :P :P),
-
Dave remind me next weekend to send them pics of the started resto TM for you.
-
Thank's fella's, lots of food for thought. Money is very tight, life is getting short and the wife and daughters are forcing me outta the house. I got an XT500 project under way which is for racing not for show. But, I'd like 2 bikes for different classes. Cheers Freakshow I'll try and remind you.
-
A TM bottom end on a modified TS cylinder will be as good as you can get.
Is that silencer making another appearence Doc? ;D
-
nah Loz, CF RGV250 track bike items, picked up a pair for being in the right place at the right time. They work extremely well and cut noise considerably ;)
-
Hey Doc
You really are a Suzuki fiend.
-
someone has to give the oddballs and orphans a home Curly :D
-
The TS idea has a lot of merit. As Doc has said the TS frame is lighter than the TM and the geometry is the same. The motors have so much in common and most of the suspension stuff will interchange even if the TS may be a year behind.
The one main problem I do remember with my mates TS125L was that the footpeg brackets bolt on and can sag with a heavy rider or on jumps. I lost count of the number of times I reweled those things. The TM has the brackets welded to the frame and overall it's a stronger setup.
-
With my weight I'd have to be jumping like Dale Buggins (RIP) to bend em' Brent but yup, replaced my pegs by welding rubber dampened XT250 items to the original brackets and refitted with hi-tens bolts ;)
-
I have to add Doc that my mate was a 13 maniac
-
stone or years old or both Brent? :D
-
The guy was about 13 stone and looking back probably not much older.
He was a big boy!
-
probably a little over the SWL for the pegs but eh, oldfart borrowed the TS400 with a similar bolt on peg setup for Conondale a few years back and it came home with somewhat droopy pegs :-\ he did mention he was getting good air though :P
-
Be nice ;D Yes I have decided to weld Tm like mounts to my TS/TM hybrid for the same reason .
Progress is Slooooow
-
:D g'day ol' fella, you've been veeeewy qwiet of wate, were your ears burning? ;D
-
just surfing :)
-
more like you read TS 400 and your ribs ached for 3 days ;D ;D ;D

Can someone please get a TM400 for Michael to put him out of his misery? I love how he takes every opportunity to put in his request for one. If I had a TM400 I'd sell it to you Michael.
Now.....resume normal programming, Hot Rod TS 125 Suzukis.

Wow :o that kit is awesome!!
-
Are you going to have a bid on it?
-
I wish! That kit is trick and it's nice to dream. I'm still looking for another bike TO race while I fix up my XT500.

I have most of a 185 kit (pipe, 175cc cylinder, piston/rings, inner rotor ignition), but I have a webco head for mine along with an RM125S intake adaptor (for up to 34mm carbs) All to be nestled into a TM125 chassis with a DG swingarm too ;D

Thanks Firko I can only hope I will find one in the not to distant future I keep asking because I'd really like one and I'd be extremely happy with just a motor and frame to build from alot of people say they are a terrible bike it's hard to believe that when it doesn't seem to drive many out for sale thanks Michael.
Also when you build a ts to tm specs properly I'd expect you have to pour in a bit of money are you better off with a slightly expensiver tm to start with as no modification is really needed. If you factor in purchase of ts parts motor work paint etc etc I assume it would cost quite alot to have the finished product thanks Michael. :)

If he ever learns how to punctuate a sentence, I suspect his school would donate a TM to his family in surprise!

Dont blame the Kid , its the bloody PC School system these days :o
To much time spent on PC and greenie bullshit and not enough time spent on the basics >:(

Jeez....When I had a shot at Michaels punctuation I got hammered by Freaky and someone else for picking on him. You guys are absolutely right though.
Come on Michael, as I said on the other thread, you're a great kid but you need to get your punctuation in order for us to read your posts. A forum post isn't a text.

So true. I'm gobsmacked by the illiteracy of today's generation. My goddaughter is working in America and her emails to me are something you'd expect from a 10 year old, not a tertiary educated 23 year old. She's far from stupid but has got into lazy "texting" lingo for everything. As a lover of the English language it pisses me off that educaters and the kids themselves don't give a shit. Ask an 18 year old what the last book he or she read and unless it's Harry Potter or Twilight, they'll look at you blankly.
-
grumpy old buggers eh Frosty :D rumor has it, it's hard to teach ol' dogs new tricks ;) :P
-
Ok I will try and write things up a bit better

Luke I don't go to school any more I really did hate being there even though I got good marks I prefer trade school. I am an apprentice Plumber and Gasfitter I work with my Dad. It is funny you say blame the PC school system my little brother doesn't get to do much if any handwriting they all have laptops with auto spell check so how do you learn with auto correction. Also Cyclegod all the kids now know teachers cannot touch them if you knew you were going to cop a whack you would think twice about doing it again thanks Michael.
I Reckon it's a good idea to go on with the ts tm thread insted of Frosty not being good at spelling but wanting a tm400 thanks Michael.
-
think the thread is pretty much done anyway, there's only so much you can do to a TS125 ;)
-
The last thing this thread needs then is a pommie reminding anyone that 'Educater' .....is actually spelt e..d..u..c..a..t..O..r.
-
maybe Firko needs spell check

Listen Firko & friends, I am an Educator at the primary level and we do f^#*k teach the basics, when the f^%#$k bureaucrats and politicians decide to let us!!!! In fact that's what I want more than anything else except that I spend most of my time dealing with rotten kids who's parents don't give a f*(&k! Either they aren't interested or they're down the pub or elsewhere! Or they'd rather buy a packet of smokes than pay for a $10 bus fare to go on an excursion to the Art Gallery to see the Picasso collection! I spent most of my life outside of the teaching system and find it strange that some people who don't understand or know anything about schools are more than prepared to put the knife in. I love teaching kids and making a difference some of them have such f*&^ked up lives, so give us a break.
-
:D yeah so stick that up ya jumpers! :P ;D mmm..maybe we should have listened to Frosty and got back on with the hotty TS125 tips ;D :D God I love the internet, it's my main source of amusement! ;D
-
Yeah maybe :D :D :D :D
-
Hey Dave I got a 1973 TS125 here only missing the headlight , perfect for your project start. $350 ;) Cheers Tim. ( Crass sales pitch I know but to many projects got to rationise :-\)

I thought Teachers got plenty of breaks ??? Smokos, lunch breaks, Half terms , Full terms, All public holidays , Easter break, christmas break, Annual leave. Have I missed any ;) ;D ;D ;D

Teacher only days........

Who's a pom? Not me, I was born in Paddington N.S.W. Jeez I make one typo and you give me a serve ::) My spellings a hell of a lot better than most so there's no need to give me spelling lessons matey. It was a simple bloody typo.

The bottom line is that the kids are not learning the art of communication. I edit asignments and essays for uni students and I'm really disturbed by the atrocious spelling, lack of punctuation and inability to articulate a point from these kids that have obviously recieved a high enough pass to get into university. I was nothing special at school, left at the age of 14 and worked with my hands my whole life yet here I am advising them on how to write an essay. There's something mighty wrong with the system. I apologise for singling educators as the bad guys behind this, I should have blamed the system. I have a couple of friends who are teachers and they're in love with what they do but like you are frustrated by a system that's more interested in political correctness than education. Another friend was the headmaster of a primary school who was continually being carpeted because he took the time to give some students extra after school lessons. In the end he left in frustration and started a gym. He's still bitter and he totally agrees with what I say.
Ok I will try and write things up a bit better
Michael, I'm sorry to single you out mate but your posts were getting a tad hard to understand. Like I've said all along, you're a good young bloke who seems to genuinely love the old bikes which in this day and age is a rare thing. Your latest post is a great and shows what a difference a bit of punctuation can make.
-
Unlike tow truck operators who are undoubtedly the backbone of the nation eh Bill . Seeing your such a shy retiring type I bet you never gave teachers a hard time at school either;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
What is this thread about anyway ???
-
Loz dont bag the Towies :o you know were sensitive shy retiring PC types ;D
-
The thread was about ts125 to tm125. I don't know how tow truck drivers got involved but we definetly need them if you haven't had to use one you have been lucky. I think teaching would be a hard job too no doubt. Firko I'm not worried about being singled out I understand some of my posts may have been a bit rough and hard to understand. If any one wants to sell me a tm400 that would be good and I would be happy with just a motor and frame thanks Michael.
-
I'll give it to you Frosty .....your persistant ;D
-
you're persistant oldfart not your. jeez!! ::)
-
Hey, I went to school to eat my lunch and look at the girls. "so put that up you'r pipe and smoke it " ;D
-
put that up you'r pipe and smoke it
last thing I stuck up a pipe was a spud in my tech drawing teachers mini ;D it was meant to go off with a bang but instead it blew the seam on the muffler :o run Forrest RUN!! :-X
