Title: How many Southerners want to venture north to watch Bubba ride?
Post by: magoo on July 28, 2009, 07:06:07 pm
it was announced today that Bubba Stewart is riding the last round of Reedys SuperX in Brisbane in December. What say we get a busload of southern VMXers to trek north to watch something special. Could be a good weekend.

If it was serious racing with a serious outcome I would think of going up. What's the chances that it will be an 'off season demonstration' race?

I can't see Bubba and Chad agreeing on anything, much less putting on a demonstration race. With the feeling between the two of them they won't be playing games. Anyway, I'd still pay to watch the two best riders in the world go head to head.

Busload?  Eeek.   :o

Last time I travelled between BrisVegas and Sydney by bus, I swore that I would never do it again....(it was the 1980 Brissy Supercross, by a strange twist of fate)

How about Flying Business Class?  Free grog that way and more time in Brissy.  Any takers?   ::)

In a major coup for Super X and the sport of Supercross in Australia, Global Action Sports has announced that current world supercross Champion, James “Bubba” Stewart, will make the trip to Australia to take on his biggest rival and Australia’s dual world Champion, Chad Reed, at the final round of Super X in Brisbane on December 5.

The two supercross stars have only ever raced against each other in North America and will go head to head in Australia in what will be the biggest supercross race ever held outside of the North America.

23 year old Stewart from Haines City in Florida is commonly referred to as ‘the Tiger Woods of Supercross” and is already considered to be among the supercross greats.

In 2009 Stewart claimed back the American AMA Supercross Championship from Reed, in the closest series of all time with only four points overall separating the two. Stewart had previously won the championship in 2007 whilst Reed won in 2004 and 2008.

“I have a lot of respect for Chad (Reed) and our rivalry only makes us race better and is great for the sport. This year was the toughest I ever had to fight to win a championship, which made the victory even sweeter.

“When the opportunity came up to race in Super X in Australia I didn’t think twice. I have never been or raced there before and I am really looking forward to taking on Chad (Reed) in his country. It will be a great race and we will both be going for it,” said Stewart.

The Super X series finale in Brisbane will be the first time the rivals will race against each other since the final round of the AMA Championship in Las Vegas in May where Stewart reclaimed the world championship. It will also be the only time they will race before the 2010 AMA series so both riders will be chasing the confidence boost that would come from a win.

“The only place I have ever raced supercross against James (Stewart) is in North America so I can’t wait for the match up with a home crowd advantage. It is by far the biggest supercross race ever held in Australia and will be great for the fans.

“It is a testament to the series that James (Stewart) will be competing in a race. He is riding at his best at the moment and had a great season in the USA. This will be my first chance to race against him in my bid to getting back the AMA Championship next year so we will both be giving it our all,” said Reed.

Reed is also in great form and currently leading the AMA Pro Motocross Championship by an impressive 65 points with four rounds remaining. If this form continues he looks likely to be wearing the crown when he returns to Australia for the Super X series.

In 2008 Brisbane hosted the final round of Super X and attracted the biggest crowd of the series when 20,000 people descended upon QSAC. Organisers believe the matchup between Reed and Stewart will attract an even bigger crowd in 2009 and are expecting supercross fans from all over the state and country to make their way to Brisbane for the epic battle.

Michael Porra who is the Managing Director of Global Action Sports said the event will make Supercross history and will really put Super X, the Australasian Supercross Championship on the map.

“There has never been a Supercross race like this outside of the USA where the two best riders in the world who are both at the top of their game will go head to head. This is a massive coup for the sport and sends a clear signal to the world of Australia’s standing in the world of supercross.

“We will be building the biggest track of the series in Brisbane with some exciting challenges for the riders. The racing will be fast and cut-throat and fans all across the world will be watching and following” concluded Porra.

The hugely successful Triple Challenge will feature in the finals at the Brisbane round. The exciting format pits riders against each other in three short and fast races of seven laps with points gained in each race to go toward their final tally for the round. For the first time ever the 250cc class will also race the unique format in their final.

Brisbane will be well represented across the Open and 250cc class with a large number of Super X competitors based in the area such as Troy Carroll, Robbie Marshall and a number of Brisbane riders that race overseas to be announced in the coming months.

Tickets are on sale now. For more information and to purchase visit www.superx.com.au

James Stewart has announced today that he will withdraw from competing in the Genoa Supercross (Genoa, Italy) and Brisbane Super X (Brisbane, Australia) due to medical reasons.

James was forced to withdraw from the 3rd day of racing the Bercy Supercross (Paris, France) and forfeit his potential win as a result of contracting a severe case of food poisoning.

Upon return to the United States and his home base in Florida, James took minimal time to recover before getting back into an aggressive training and testing program for the upcoming races and 2010 Supercross season.

After recent medical evaluation, his Doctor and L&M medical staff found his immune system to be dangerously compromised and James was advised by his Doctor and Team that he should discontinue any strenuous activity and not travel out of the country at this time.

When asked about the decision, James had this to say: “I am really bummed about not being able to race in Italy and Australia. I’ve had such a great experience racing internationally. The fans are incredible and the race organizations really go out of their way to support me racing. I really wish I could still go but after talking with my doctors and team it’s not in my best interest to jeopardize my health before the long Supercross season starts.”

Said Larry Brooks, Team San Manuel Manager “At this time, James will be focusing on getting healthy and preparing to defend his Supercross championship title. Taking time to improve his health and well being is our first priority.” James will continue to undergo medical evaluation and refrain from any kind of strenuous training activity until his Doctor and medical staff advise he is fit to resume.

I bet that there is alot more to this story than we are hearing.
Its hard to believe that an athlete at the top of his sport with millions of $ and all the trainers ,doctors, dieticians etc behind him  can suddenly discover that his ammune system is compromised.
It would be interesting to hear some comments from Gally about all this , especially since he had a falling out with the Stewart Family.
IMO all the people who were going just because of Budda have got it all wrong. Those people should still go to see the Racing and support our guys.
Im not out to upset anyone but I've never been a huge fan of Budda's.He's a great rider of course but IMO lacks maturity and mental toughness, he 's still like a kid to me ( sorry)
I saw him get beat by Everts at MXdN in 06 .Everts passed him on the biggest most rutted of camber on the track without taking a foot of the pegs an Budda says that he wasn't trying to win individually only do enough for the team win.Yer right .

Okay go ahead guys start bashing me now .I can take it.

Quote:There’s a good chance now that Stewart’s out,” said McGrath, who rides for Woodstock Honda Thor Racing while he’s down under. “I’ve told Yarrive [Konsky, WHTR team owner] and Mal [Peter, Super X general manager] that I’d do it, so it just depends on whether they get some other current big guy.

“I’d do it. I mean, Brisbane’s awesome and was fun last year, so now that I’m riding a little better it’d be fun for sure. Part of my heart is Australian so it would be good to be here. I’m keen to do it, so we’ll see.”

The immune system thing...... maybe it's like Casey Stoner's mystery illness? I think the reality is that he isn't feeling 100% and these other "jobs", (Bercy and Australia) was just pocket money to him. He wouldn't want to risk the BIG PICTURE ($) and not be ready for AMA SX starting in January.

Yer you are right about all that and the BIG PICTURE($) but pulling out of Bercy on the last night is strange. He was already there.
Still dont understand how he could get to that point.Whats he been doing since SX season ended?
On the other hand IMO Casey Stoner was wornout/stressed out and needed a break.I can't see how Bubba would need a break when he hasn't done much since end of May.But I take your points.

Matt Moss was quick not doubt about it and possibly as fast as Reed.
unfortunately he threw it away in the whoops in the 2nd final and got carted off by the medics.
Reed went 3 from 3.
Reardon looked the goods but had a tangle with Moss in one of the races that put him back a little.
Marmont was up there also.
Millsaps was better than i thought he would be with solids 2nds to Reed and both he and Reardon were the only 2 guys i saw doing a tricky jump at the end of a fast sweeper.
Josh Grant appparently went down hard in practise {i never saw it}, he won his heat race, got a bad start in the first final in about 7th~ish and then i lost him after that. he must've called it a night. shamme, cause i was hoping to see more of him.
young P.J. Larson from the states took a while to find his rythm but went quite well also.
about all i'm thinking of right now. kind of tired and full of junk food.
 :D

Was also impressed with the privateer in the open class, never heard of him before, but spent most of the night floating around in the top 5,he was seriously pumped in the interview after the first final, don't think he'll be a privateer for long.
Loved the format, individual timed laps to determine grid selection, and three 7 lap finals.

P.J.Larson was the privateer, there are plenty more like him in the US.
It was dissapointing Josh Grant pulled out of the finals, he would've really given Reed a run. Not sure what happened to him.

No, it wasn't PJ Larson, he was an Aussie, surname started with 'S", he caught and passed Larson in one moto. In the first final he was rubbing plastic with Marmont and Millsap for a few laps. He was fast but didn't seem to be riding over his head, seemed very comfortable at that pace.
Number 24 I think

Matt Moss already had the Lites championship wrapped up, but the competition was intense for the round win and minor places in the championship. America’s Kyle Cunningham riding for the Serco Yamaha took the first of the three motos, local privateer, Brendan Harrison took the second and Rockstar Motul Suzuki’s Lawson Bopping won the third as the rain set in.

Cunningham won the round overall which gave him second in the overall Lites championship, Bopping finished second in the round and third overall in the championship and Brendan Harrison finished the round third.

“I just want to thank my team and all my sponsors. It’s been a great series and it’s been a great preparation for the US next year,” said Moss.

Cunningham prepares to return to America for the 2010 AMA Supercross series after filling in for an injured Mitch Hoad.

“I had a few ups and downs throughout the season and overall it was a great learning experience for me and everybody is really nice out here,” Cunningham said from the podium.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of Gavin Eales and everybody at Serco Yamaha. I had my sister here tonight which really helped me cross the finish line and to do it in front of the team’s home crowd was awesome.”

Monster Energy Super X will return to Australia and New Zealand in 2010 with the series calendar to be released early next year.

MXRad Motorex Coastal KTM race team's Daniel McCoy has had a positive start to the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals taking a 8th place overall at round 1 in Horsham, Vic, last Sunday.

McCoy showed enough speed to be with the front runners every time he hit the track for the three 20 minute moto's but a small injury and some bad luck saw him further down the overall standings than he deserved to be.

“I pulled a muscle pretty bad in my chest in practice, so I was riding with a bit of pain," McCoy explained.

“I got a great start in moto 1 and just put my head down and started to log some laps. The lead bunch got out in front pretty early and set a really fast pace, but I had my own battles with reigning champ Jay Marmont behind me”.

“After the 20 minutes though, I was able to cross the line for fifth, which was a good start to the year”.

Out of character for the drought-stricken region, the heavens opened for the second moto, and the tacky clay surface turned to an unpredictable mud. The rain wasn’t real hard for the second moto McCoy had to make the choice between roll-offs or tear-offs.

“With it running at just a drizzle, I went for tear-offs, but the water crept it's way between the bottom tear-off and goggle lens and my vision was gone," McCoy told.

“I ditched the goggles on the second lap and raced the whole 20 minutes without them. The roost was horrible, my eyes were swelling up and I was in pain, but I managed to stay in sixth for the majority of the moto, until a last lap battle with Craig Anderson and Cheyne Boyd relegated me back to seventh.”

“Moto three was a real wet one with conditions deteriorating rapidly. Lap times slowed a lot and the riders did the best they could with the slippery conditions. I was running around the same position I had been for the first two motos and then I was taken out right near the end, which dropped me back to 10th. A bit of a bummer, but still a good start to the season."

“So far, I’m stoked with how the team has come together. My bike is running awesome and I’ve got awesome support from some great companies. I really want to thank everyone who has been involved with the team so far, and hopefully we can put us on the box for the next round," McCoy concluded.

Ryan Villopoto confirmed for the Sydney and Brisbane Monster Energy Super X event
Global Action Sports confirmed today that one of the biggest supercross stars on the planet, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, will compete in the final two rounds of the Monster Energy Super X in Sydney at Parramatta Stadium on November 27 and Brisbane at QSAC on December 4, 2010.

The two Australian events will be the first time Villopoto has ever raced in Australia.

21 year old Villopoto was leading the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series with an incredible seven race wins, the most of any rider in 2010, until a broken leg forced him out of the championship. He is considered to be the future dominant star of the sport along with his arch rival, Ryan Dungey who went on to win this year’s AMA series.

Following a hugely successful career in the AMA motocross and supercross Lites championships, Villopoto went on to become one of only three riders in history to win his first premier class supercross race and the only person besides the GOAT, Ricky Carmichael, to claim three straight 250cc motocross titles and then win his 450 class debut.

Managing Director of Global Action Sports Mike Porra said the signing of Villopoto to race two events in this year’s series is testament to the growth of supercross and Super X in Australasia.

“Villopoto is the hottest property in the world of supercross and it is so exciting for fans down under to get the opportunity to see such a big star compete on Australian soil. We have a huge lineup of international riders competing in the series this year, which proves its well on its way to becoming the second biggest supercross series in the world.

“It’s going to be an epic battle between Ryan Villopoto and his team mate Chad Reed as well as all of Australia’s best who have been stepping it up every year,” concluded Porra.

Other international riders heading down under to compete include:

- Geico Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham (USA); Second overall in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Canberra and Launceston)

- Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps (USA); Third in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Canberra and Launceston)

- Jagermeister KTM’s Mike Alessi (USA): Former world number two in motocross (All rounds)

- Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGRMX’s Justin Brayton (USA); Fifth in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Newcastle, Canberra and Launceston)

- Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda/Red Bull’s Ben Townley (NZ); Currently third overall in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship underway in the USA (Auckland and Dunedin)
Australia’s greatest ever supercross rider and twice world champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed, will be competing and all of Australia’s best including CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Jay Marmont, Rockstar Motul Suzuki twins Matt and Jake Moss as well as young gun JDR Motorex KTM’s Tye Simmonds.

Gotta love that little Alessi kiddie, but he never finished 2nd in the World MX Championships. He might have done so in one of those minibike one day extravaganzas - but never against the big boys.

From memory he did finish 2nd to Ivan Tedesco in the Lites [after failing to knock him out of the race - literally]. But that doesn't count.

Yeah, it seems to go in fits and starts - you don't hear about it for a while then it is all the rage.

For the aussies, we call it glandular fever even though Epstein Barr virus sounds a bit more serious.  ;D

IMO, Chad knows he can't match the Dunga so dogged it. Probably wrong but it doesn't look good. Just waiting for Villapoto and the African-American Animal to return.
At the super -x in bris last Dec and only 2 doubled in off the big sweeper- shit hot to watch.
Got tickets for Canberra and the rider list looks great- track has to be better this year.

Come on mate.. Chad never backed down from racing RC or Stewart who are 2 of the best ever. He always believes he can win and racing Dungey is no different.
If he thought he couldn't win he'd pull the pin alltogether.

Multiple AMA/World Supercross champion, Newcastle’s Chad Reed has confirmed from his Florida base today that he will be at the start gates for the first round of Monster Energy Super X at Energy Australia Stadium on October 16.

After parting with long time sponsor Thor and Monster Energy Kawasaki, the Kurri Kurri native has still yet to reveal which brand of bike he will be riding for the round or if he will be competing in the whole series. The opening round will be Reeds first competitive race since withdrawing from the AMA Lucas Oils Motocross Championship back on July 24th.

28-year-old Reed has endured a difficult racing season overseas battling both injury and illness.

One of the AMA/World Supercross title favourites, Reed was ruled out of the running in January with injury. He made a successful return to race the US national outdoors season, winning the opening round, before being diagnosed with the debilitating Epstein Barr virus which put a halt to his championship defense.

The back-to-back Super X Open Champion underwent an extensive and exhausting treatment program to attack the virus and has gone to great lengths to ensure he would be fit to compete at Newcastle.

A partner with Global Action Sports in the successful Super X venture, Reed finally realised a long-held goal of having a round held in his home town.

Currently free of any commitment to motorcycle manufacturers, Reed has partnered with a blue-chip global brand to appear at Energy Australia Stadium and will debut his unique race machine in the week leading up to the event.

“It’s been a tough year, and although it’s not ideal to be racing at this point I would not miss the chance to be able to race in front of a home crowd with my family, friends and fans in the stands,” said Reed.

“This will be a really special time for me, I can’t wait to compete in front of a Novacastrian crowd again.”

Are you going to support SX in NSW   ?  :P

Newcastle will host the first round of the 2010 Monster Energy Super X Championship this Saturday October 16, with a huge lineup of Australian and American supercross stars, ready to battle it out at Energy Australia Stadium.

All eyes will be on local hero and reigning Super X champion, Chad Reed, as he makes his return to racing, after being sidelined from US competition earlier in the year with the Epstein Barr virus. Reed unveiled the new team and motorcycle he will be competing on in the series opener earlier this week, TeamVodafone, and can’t wait to get out and race in front of his home town.

Reardon-Mosig-Waters= “I am extremely proud of the effort of all three riders,” Konsky said. “It was a solid performance considering the team came together with two new riders just three weeks ago.

“We came in wanting to lay a strong foundation and that is what we achieved.”

Good size crowd and a great start to the season..
And of course the Reed Red Rocket played the tunes  ;D   :P  :P
