Matt Moss already had the Lites championship wrapped up, but the competition was intense for the round win and minor places in the championship. America’s Kyle Cunningham riding for the Serco Yamaha took the first of the three motos, local privateer, Brendan Harrison took the second and Rockstar Motul Suzuki’s Lawson Bopping won the third as the rain set in.

Cunningham won the round overall which gave him second in the overall Lites championship, Bopping finished second in the round and third overall in the championship and Brendan Harrison finished the round third.

“I just want to thank my team and all my sponsors. It’s been a great series and it’s been a great preparation for the US next year,” said Moss.

Cunningham prepares to return to America for the 2010 AMA Supercross series after filling in for an injured Mitch Hoad.

“I had a few ups and downs throughout the season and overall it was a great learning experience for me and everybody is really nice out here,” Cunningham said from the podium.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of Gavin Eales and everybody at Serco Yamaha. I had my sister here tonight which really helped me cross the finish line and to do it in front of the team’s home crowd was awesome.”

Monster Energy Super X will return to Australia and New Zealand in 2010 with the series calendar to be released early next year.

Daniel McCoy gets a solid start to MX Nationals

MXRad Motorex Coastal KTM race team's Daniel McCoy has had a positive start to the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals taking a 8th place overall at round 1 in Horsham, Vic, last Sunday.

McCoy showed enough speed to be with the front runners every time he hit the track for the three 20 minute moto's but a small injury and some bad luck saw him further down the overall standings than he deserved to be.

“I pulled a muscle pretty bad in my chest in practice, so I was riding with a bit of pain," McCoy explained.

“I got a great start in moto 1 and just put my head down and started to log some laps. The lead bunch got out in front pretty early and set a really fast pace, but I had my own battles with reigning champ Jay Marmont behind me”.

“After the 20 minutes though, I was able to cross the line for fifth, which was a good start to the year”.

Out of character for the drought-stricken region, the heavens opened for the second moto, and the tacky clay surface turned to an unpredictable mud. The rain wasn’t real hard for the second moto McCoy had to make the choice between roll-offs or tear-offs.

“With it running at just a drizzle, I went for tear-offs, but the water crept it's way between the bottom tear-off and goggle lens and my vision was gone," McCoy told.

“I ditched the goggles on the second lap and raced the whole 20 minutes without them. The roost was horrible, my eyes were swelling up and I was in pain, but I managed to stay in sixth for the majority of the moto, until a last lap battle with Craig Anderson and Cheyne Boyd relegated me back to seventh.”

   “Moto three was a real wet one with conditions deteriorating rapidly. Lap times slowed a lot and the riders did the best they could with the slippery conditions. I was running around the same position I had been for the first two motos and then I was taken out right near the end, which dropped me back to 10th. A bit of a bummer, but still a good start to the season."

“So far, I’m stoked with how the team has come together. My bike is running awesome and I’ve got awesome support from some great companies. I really want to thank everyone who has been involved with the team so far, and hopefully we can put us on the box for the next round," McCoy concluded.

Ryan Villopoto confirmed for the Sydney and Brisbane Monster Energy Super X event
Global Action Sports confirmed today that one of the biggest supercross stars on the planet, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, will compete in the final two rounds of the Monster Energy Super X in Sydney at Parramatta Stadium on November 27 and Brisbane at QSAC on December 4, 2010.

The two Australian events will be the first time Villopoto has ever raced in Australia.

21 year old Villopoto was leading the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series with an incredible seven race wins, the most of any rider in 2010, until a broken leg forced him out of the championship. He is considered to be the future dominant star of the sport along with his arch rival, Ryan Dungey who went on to win this year’s AMA series.

Following a hugely successful career in the AMA motocross and supercross Lites championships, Villopoto went on to become one of only three riders in history to win his first premier class supercross race and the only person besides the GOAT, Ricky Carmichael, to claim three straight 250cc motocross titles and then win his 450 class debut.

Managing Director of Global Action Sports Mike Porra said the signing of Villopoto to race two events in this year’s series is testament to the growth of supercross and Super X in Australasia.

“Villopoto is the hottest property in the world of supercross and it is so exciting for fans down under to get the opportunity to see such a big star compete on Australian soil. We have a huge lineup of international riders competing in the series this year, which proves its well on its way to becoming the second biggest supercross series in the world.

“It’s going to be an epic battle between Ryan Villopoto and his team mate Chad Reed as well as all of Australia’s best who have been stepping it up every year,” concluded Porra.

Other international riders heading down under to compete include:

- Geico Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham (USA); Second overall in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Canberra and Launceston)

- Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps (USA); Third in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Canberra and Launceston)

- Jagermeister KTM’s Mike Alessi (USA): Former world number two in motocross (All rounds)

- Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGRMX’s Justin Brayton (USA); Fifth in this year’s AMA World Supercross series (Newcastle, Canberra and Launceston)

- Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda/Red Bull’s Ben Townley (NZ); Currently third overall in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship underway in the USA (Auckland and Dunedin)
Australia’s greatest ever supercross rider and twice world champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed, will be competing and all of Australia’s best including CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Jay Marmont, Rockstar Motul Suzuki twins Matt and Jake Moss as well as young gun JDR Motorex KTM’s Tye Simmonds.

Gotta love that little Alessi kiddie, but he never finished 2nd in the World MX Championships. He might have done so in one of those minibike one day extravaganzas - but never against the big boys.

From memory he did finish 2nd to Ivan Tedesco in the Lites [after failing to knock him out of the race - literally]. But that doesn't count.
