Title: Woohoo, got me a slide scanner
Post by: Graeme M on July 26, 2009, 03:10:34 pm
Bought a Canon MP980 multi function thing - printer, copier, scanner. Chose it cos it also scans slides, and today sat down and ran off a couple of the old slides. I can see I need to experiment with settings to get a good result, and in any case it probably doesn't scan as well as a specialist 35mm film scanner, but at least I can digitise them well enough to look at again. Being slides I haven't really looked at them in years and I have hundreds of them.

Here's a few I did today.

Yeah, it's neat seeing them all again, it's years since I looked at them. I have a lot of MX, Enduro and Dirt Track from the early 80s in Queensland. It'll take me ages to scan them all in but I'll do it. I'll share some of the better ones as I do them...

The scanner is a multifunction Canon MP980, about $450 I think. We needed a new printer and I convinced the finance manager that for a few extra dollars we could get the slide scanning function as well.

Have you got any shots from the 1980 3 hour at Action Park?

Yep, the Moates shot is at the Melanesia 2000, I think it was called. Not sure of the year, I'll have to have a look.

No 1980 3-Hour photos I don't think, but I'll see what I have as I go through them. I didn't get into the photography until about 1980/81 and the majority of pics will be 1982-85. I do have some prints of a 3-hour in about 1980 when Hansford rode though.

Michael, you're a nice young bloke and I'm stoked that someone your age is interested in old bikes but could you please start using capital letters, full stops ending actual sentences and commas and apostrophes where needed? I imagine it's accepted  to use such grammar when texting but on a forum post it makes it bloody hard to decipher what you're actually talking about without any punctuation.

I'm not telling you this for the sake of laying shit, I'm doing it so more of us can understand your posts. Mate, you've only just left school so you surely must remember what the English teachers taught you?

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I had to read Michaels post four times before it made any sense  ::). Now, back to the slide scanner post.

A couple more.  I've been experimenting with settings and have discovered a whole new world of colour balance correction, adjusting tones and saturation and so on. Sadly I haven't a clue what all that means and most of my efforts don't improve things much, but I am getting closer to an acceptable result. 1985 3-Hour.

Here Here, Firko.
I constantly say the same thing to my 2 teenagers.
Please don't take it the wrong way Michael, because that's not how it is meant. Having someone your age interested is refreshing.
Great Photo's by the way Graeme, especially the Dirt Track ones, back to you.

Yep, this is the Old Photos and English 101 thread.

#8, I have about a dozen or so pics from the 1980 3-Hour including a few of Hansford. Anyone special you were looking for?

Graeme,

Given your enthusiasm to post pics, I have obviously taken your ruling on June 19th about pics too literally.  I suppose that's what being a novice is all about.

I followed your suggestion and then followed Jock's guide, only I left the photos in photobucket and posted the URL address.  Do I take it that the photos can be uploaded into the post now????    ::)

Firko; notice the punctuation.  It's close to correct even if I know jack ... about computers.

No, I have got attaching photos turned off cos I am running out of space. But I am thinking of upgrading my server package so that may change. Because I own the site though I can upload my own photos...

However, you can certainly insert images into posts the way I am if you have the photos hosted elsewhere. In other words, host the pics somewhere else, then use the image URL in the Insert Image action when you areb posting. That works and looks just the same as mine do above.

Not sure about the YZ #8. I do have some photos of a YZ with a big tank but I think that was a few years later and may have been Kevin Horton. I'll have a dig around.

Hey Graeme. I was racing in the 85 3 hour. I teamed up with a guy on a cr500 from down south ( cant even remember his name). The #3 RM500 are the Owen brothers. Dave Armstrong was there as well. Do you know who is on the #1?

He rode it by himself, the first year 1980 we rode it together, then I was back in Vic racing and he rode it by himself 3 or 4 years in a row

Brad, I actually have a lot of photos from that event in my collection, can you recall your number? Who did you ride with - was it Baldwin? I took a few of some trick Hondas, I think Foreman was on a Honda too with twin front disks. Yes, the #3 bike was Gary and Terry Owen who rode for our local Suzuki dealer Greg Ohl Suzuki. They were quick riders, not sure where they are now. Last I heard of Terry he was in the NT and still riding. Greg Ohl retired from the industry to run a business on Fraser Island although I believe he was seriously injured in an accident a little while back.

I'll try to scan in all the pics from that 85 3-Hour and post them up over the next few days.

Its all a bit hazy now. He rode for Bennett Honda i recall. Baldwin doesn't ring a bell. Cant even remember the riding number as it wasn't my bike. Hopefully you have a pic that will jog my memory.

Might take a couple of days but I'll post up a new thread about that 3-hour. About time we had some 80s Dirt Track to look at...

It was always a wet meeting from memory. Remember the real wet one (first one i think) when Dack got his bike bogged and had to walk away from it standing upright in the mud?
Who is the #B in the same shot?

Graeme,

If my failing memory serves me correct, wasn't there also a 2 or 3 hour motocross at Maleny involving teams of 2 or iron-man in around 1980?  Any one?  Any one?

Don't know that I can recall that one. Do you mean at Conondale or the other track, what was it... Stanmore Park? There was an endurance race at Toowoomba I think, can't remember now but I think that was MX. That one lasted for quite a few years too I believe.

There was a lot of local MX and DT back in the late 70s/early 80s. The old Dirt Track races at Tivoli, Kedron, Kingaroy and so on, plus MX just about everywhere. Around my home town we had races at Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Miriamvale, Mothar Mountain at Gympie and so on. Plus with the enduros and black events and you could race nearly every weekend in that part of the world.

Ahhh... the good old black enduro/pony express races. All those guys racing like Roger Sover and his mate Richard Sole...

I just remember it as Maleny. It was on a relatively steep hillside; we started at the top and rode down into a valley and then worked our way back up.  It was an open meeting with ACUQ (as it was then) sanction.  I remember the events at Tivoli including Mr MX rounds.

Thanks for that.  At least I'm not totally senile.  But I can't even remember who I rode with, let alone who else was in the race.  Lots of fun, tho (but).
