Title: Shipping trap for the unwary.
Post by: firko on July 07, 2009, 10:34:03 am
Nice tank, just what I need so I was about to bid until I saw the shipping cost. I contacted the seller but he won't budge so the search for a tank seller offering an honest shipping cost goes on. The trap to avoid is anybody shipping UPS or FedEx. They sellers do it because they don't have to go to the post office as both of those companies pick up at your address. The downside is that the buyer cops the extravagent fees.

Yep..tops. I recently got a fibreglass B44GP replica tank here for $35 shipping. The crook thing is the above bloke has some nice tanks for sale and he's effectively removing cashed up UK/Euro and Aussie buyers from the equation. Some American sellers just don't get it.

I got a CB450 twin tank over for $70. Was here in 6 days. Not bad I thought.

To the sellers credit, he just got back to me again stating that the shipping is indeed way too much and he'd be happy to send the tank via USPS. Methinks he may have had other enquiries from overseas, prompting a rethink. Now, I'll watch the bidding with interest and hopefully get to bid on it.

Hey Guy's i've only had about 50 trades in the States but never had any problems at all, I've had wheels, pipes and a few other bulky items through from time to time and never been nailed yet. I had a piston kit turn up 2 days after the auction closed out of Texas, so saved this trader to favorites, good luck, cheers MC

Oldfart - you wouldn't buy it regardless would you - I went through partsfixation buy 1 full gasket kit $20 freight to NZ buy 15 full kits $20 freight to NZ. Some of these clowns think they can make up for the shortfall on their auction price by whackn up the freight costs.
cheers MC

Yeah Canada is expensive, but its good if they live near the border and can go across to USA and then post it from US and its cheaper

The flip side of the coin is to also ask if you can use your own freight and set your self up a TNT account ect. Then organise your own freight at your own cost!!!

Just an Idea that I use in my day to day work as a purchasing officer, as lots of companies want to charge you more than what it worth. I have had people try and charge me for there fuel to go to the post office after spending 600bucks with them, But nothing will suprise me nothing.

Look for soultions don't look at the poblems, and if you do there is usally a way out of it. Haven't been beaten yet.

Cheers Nutz

i think the first step is for the USPS online calulator to be made more accuarate. Its so way off its not funny, or for sellers to  not use it full stop.

long beach is a sea port all boxes go via private import companys.there are a few i know of but the 2 in nsw imprt cars first and boxes last.any size box can be sent via shipping container.search hot rod clubs in your area and see who thay get to import stuff and tag along with them thats what i did.

Shipping makes this tank a bit expensive as well. And it has plenty of dents

foot note on the fed ex thing i just got a guy to send me a tank, seat, bars, controls, electrics and pipe in a box and it came to $120, he went in 3 times with differance size boxes and the price went from #200,180 and so on.

Seems that tracks as well so its not a bad deal compared to the normal USPS so i said go for it, seems if you do the yards there is always another price.

Another recent benchmark for evertone.  Husky 1984 tank (quite large due to assymetric shape) just arrived today from US.  US$43.60 USPS shipping cost on the box. Very reasonable in my opinion and certainly worth pushing back when people ask heaps more. Cheers :D

That's good. I just bought a more compact '74 Maico coffin alloy tank and got hit $56.20 to ship it. I'm happy with that but would have liked it a tad cheaper.

Stung by my own stupidity, asked a guy in the US to post me a tank seat set via USPS send him $150 to cover the cost etc.

GEt a phone call today from a freight forwarding in Melb claiming to have my goods ? WTF he was told to post it.   NOw i have them on the phone demanding $200 customs clearance and dutys before i can get my box sent to my door ?

Seems no matter how clear you are, be clearer, i thought the shipper understood what i was asking him to do.  now im stuck with a $200 tank seat set, that i paid $150 to post as well but now also has a $200 freight forwarder charge on it, cause he though it was easyier to send via a transport company.

What do you do ?  suck it in and put it down to just another experiance i guess but that made a borderline deal just get stupid.
