I won't dribble on as I can't begin to speak highly enough of this event. To the 3 'main' guys and all involved who made it all possible, THANKS to everyone for a brilliant CD6! VMX Utopia! 8)
feel free to post pics or whatever as didn't get to take sweet FA and missed so much because of riding (which was Utopia in itself and the track perfect!) There being simply too much and too many like minded people and bikes for my small brain to comprehend!
-
Sounds like it was another top Event Doc, was the weather kind?
looking forward to the stories and pics in the next week.
-
Just got in and tipped everything out of the ute and onto the garage floor and now I'm off to bed.

Ditto all of the above. Awesome track and great people. Shared Vandy's campsite along with YZHilly and YZ250H. The latter two I was meeting for the first time, and two nicer guys you couldn't hope to meet.
Thanks again to the organisers and workers, looking forward to the next one.

We all went a little crazy while you were all gone. Hoony said bloody a couple of times and Paul put up a pic of a dog doing something to gnome but overall I kept them all in line (plus I deleted all the rude stuff I put up). :)

I wholeheartedly concur. It was superb. Superbly superb!!
Can't credit the VMX crew enough. I've only been to 2 CD's & this was far & away the better one. The venue, the tracks (3 of), the "ambience" (to quote someone on the day), the quality & variety of bikes, the people, the weather, the ozvmx contacts, the comeraderie, catching up w old contacts/friends & meeting new ones, talking bike techno re owners' modifications, the smell of racing fuel, the legends' laps, the 4-strokes, the no of trials bikes/riders who came, the no of sidecars who came & demo'd ...
My only regret was lack of time... to meet more of the ozvmx forum members, to watch the trials guys, to talk longer w everybody, to find Graeme & say a HUGE thankyou for the forum.
I was only there Sat & w'in an hour or so, I knew my stay wasn't going to be long enough. It just passed all too quickly - as all good things do!
I'll post some pics of some of my favourite bikes soon.
Does anybody have a contact they could PM me for the guy who was selling a circa 72/73 incomplete husky? (He also had a Suz & TY for sale I think & was over near Doc). Everytime I went back he wasn't there & I ran out of time.
-
Thanks for the pic's. I was all set to go, planned it all year, even got the Can am ready. Come Thursday got crook as a dog and was crook all weekend.
Just as well it was a dog flu and not swine.

Hey Vandy, rumour has it you where the only site with onsite water
That was classic. I turned up just as Vandy and YZ250H (YZHilly denied any involvement) had finished setting up a tarp as an awning off the side of Vandy's trailer. As I pulled in Vandy says, "park the ute over this boggy bit of ground so that people don't walk through it all the time"
Half an hour later, we're standing around having a beer and someone looks at the "boggy" patch of ground and notices that water is actually bubbling out of the ground. It turns out that of the thousand or so tent pegs that were driven in the weekend, YZ250H (the Human Divining Rod) managed to put one straight through a water pipe.
Luckily there were a few plumbers among the punters on hand (I think Oldfart supervised) and the problem was sorted by the time Vandy and I got back from our stroll around the compound ;D ;D

What a fantastic weekend. Great bikes, Great weather and sensational people. It was a long way from home but it was worth it. It was great to meet a few people from the forum, and what can you say about those mad kiwi's, what a keen bunch of blokes.
To Hoony, thanks for the text message, and yes we did talk about you and said you where weak as pi-- for not going. The only reason we did not ring you as there was no service at the track unless you were with telstra.
The band once again was sensational and had a great time dancing and making a dick of myself, Bruce Mac didnt relise I was dancing he thought I was having a fit.
Cant wait till the next one

Yep, I can't add anything more. A fanbloodytastic weekend. Just in the door a little while ago and unloaded all the crap and now browsing all the pics on here.
Words can't describe it all... Beautiful setting, good weather, ripper tracks, great bikes, fantastic people etc etc. The highlight was seeing the Legends on the track (if you were there on Sunday, you got an extra treat - Gally and Ballard at it), but really everything else was tops too.
Hanging with our crew, checking out the bikes (so many brilliantly restored bikes!), meeting so many forum regulars (and DJRacing and TMBill again), riding on the tracks, the lovely ladies at the canteen (especially the lovely ladies at the canteen), the band on Saturday night... it just goes on. A HUGE Thank You to all involved in making this another outrageously successful Classic Dirt event.
Here's a few pics from the weekend.

Hey Vandy, rumour has it you where the only site with onsite water ;D ;D ;D
i think Mainline worded it pretty well but how bloody unlikely was that? in all the acres of paddock that played host to CD6, YZ250H {not mentioning any names ;D} drives a peg straight through a polly water pipe and yes Stu, a big thanks to you and the boys for digging it up and fixing it but i swear, that tent peg was 263mm long tops! so if you had to dig any deeper than that then there must've been foul play involved.
whats those stack of yellow tyres for behind all the suzukis lined up?
Lieth, forum member Basil has these tyres for sale at a good price. thats his little "for sale" stash.
Cookies' GP2 Phantom
that was right next to where we were set up JC.
Cookie, a nicer fella you wouldn't meet. he helped us out with setting up/packing up, always had a freindly word etc a great bloke.
and it was good to catch up with you too JC even if it took us a few moments to work out who each other was. i'll dig up those websites we discussed and send them over in the next day or so.
:)
-
Hi JC,
It was great to finally meet you.
I also wished you had more time to spend in our camp.
What a great concept.
Get a bunch of people together that love the past and make it new again,
Shiny paint and that new vinyl seat smell,
Add in some legends that still go fast and jump high,
Jam us all onto "The Holly Grail" of dirt bike tracks,
Add in the text friendships gained on OZVMX forum and
open the gate to the public so they can see what we have all done in our sheds and still feel the same excitement watching these past steeds roar around the track and fly effortlessly through the air.
Classic Dirt will become bigger than the Pro MX series as I believe there were 1000 bikes this year.

Hi Vandy,
What you said about Cookie was very true, & the same could be said about you! It was one of the highlights for me meeting you & talking about yr RT1 mods etc. So friendly & informative. VMX at its best. Many thanks. I'll look forward to those websites.
-
Pete, that was a treat seeing Mat Daley on yr husky too. He still looks soo fit & healthy. The Husky looked trim & terrific too (to put it mildly). What a timeless picture they made.
Thsi was the 1st bike I set eyes on at CD6. Sure whetted the appetite
-
Hi Guys,
Looks like it was an awesome weekend, very disappointed that work got in the way. Thanks to everyone that put pictures up, it is the next best thing.
Cheers.
-
What a weekend! Had a great time catching up face to face with blokes I hadn't seen for years. Got to meet a whole lot of new characters as well. The setting was fantastic, the tracks great! Couldn't believe how little they cut up over the weekend, really brought back the reality of the need to separate Vintage and Moderns, unfortunately something we can't do in North Queensland. The band, the Q and A, the food, the bar just made it such a great experience. Being my first CD I was amazed with the quantity and superb quality of the motorcycles. Would love to know how many were roughly there as it was huge.
To the VMX Mag organising crew, thankyou for the effort it certainly will be the hi-light of my year. Well done to the Sunshine Coast MX Club, the SES and the School's P and C for all their efforts. The Scout truck with loads of wood for sale what a gem!
Hopefully we can leave the boys alone for a little while to recover as I feel its probably like running a marathon. Directly after the event they say never again, but start back training the following week! Take care all and catchyou round the traps.
NQ Rosco.
-
Thanks to everyone for making it a fantastic W/end.
Thanks Shoey & the Husky boys for the hospitailty ;D ;D.
It was great to meet a heap of forum member's.
Even fixing the pipe that got stabed was fun, thanks guys.

Just back from the marathon drive to report that the 'Good Old Boys' had a hoot of a time meeting old mates and making new friends. Thanks to Chippy for setting up Kamp Kevlar, the Sunshine Coast MCC and most of all Ken, Ajay and Jeff for going to the extreme to make sure that this was by far the best Classic Dirt ever. It was great to party with Chris Malam and his lovely shiela Vee from the UK, the weird and wacky Team Husky and those Pesky Kiwis led by Mike Jolley, TM Bill and DJ, not to mention the lovely Val and birthday girl Karen. The vibe at CD6 was beyond cool with not a frown, argument or shit slag to be heard or seen anywhere all weekend.
It'd take a damn good club and a damn good venue to top this years amazing effort. Our vote for CD7 goes to a return to Conondale. It'd even be worth the trip for those Victorians that seem to think they've been slighted by it not being in their backyard.
On a slight thread twist, Mike Jolley misplaced his camera at Conondale which contained all of his memories of the event including his great ride on Dave Tanners RN400. The Camera is a metallic blue Fuji brand held held mini digital and Mike 'thinks' he lost it in the vicinity of the shower area. There's a few beers in it for anyone who found it. If you found it, PM me or Bazza for details on returning it.........
-
Just got home after a fairly epic road trip with CrossedUp2 and DG26, and am buggered (despite a deliberatly low-stress day today).
Two words for the whole weekend:
F$%king tops.
These two words apply to the company, the venue, the organisation, the bikes - pretty well everything except the travelling...
Will post more later, sleep now.
-
That would have to be the best VMX meeting in the WORLD bar none! even after all the rain leading up to it the 4 tracks were perfect. One Trillion thanks to Ken,AJ,Jeff, the Sunny Coast Motorcycle Club, the Legends and everyone else involved for a specticle never seen like this for our SPORT, PASSION,HOBBY or whatever it means to YOU! Too all the people who coudnt make it you have got 12 months to get your act together because everyone you miss out on is one you dont catch up on. CD7 WILL be at Conondale. If you have any doubts about it then come to the VMX Nats in August and see for yourself (where else are you gonna see 40 500cc twostrokes blasting off and all the other full classes doing the business) First there was Motox, then Conondale and Classic Dirt, the GODS are smilling on us people, take the ride!!Heaven is below the Maleny fog.For four days I never saw a grumpy or angry person, thats got to be good for you! Cant wait for the Nats, see you all there. Cheers John.
-
I am with you guys about how good the Conondale track is for these vintage events. The Nats should be huge, I hope the club can do a little marketing to bring in heaps of spectators and really spread the word. SEQ was a real hotbed of dirtbike activity in the late 70s/early 80s, and there must be hundreds of guys from those days still around and keen to get hooked on VMX!
As for CD7, well, yes, I'd be back like a shot if it is at Conondale. CD6 was the perfect weekend. Just too short! ;D
I didn't manage to do half of what I wanted to. Didn't watch the trials, didn't watch the vinduro, didn't ride the vinduro, didn't see some of the people I wanted to. But I DID ride both tracks, did see the legends, did hang out on Friday and Saturday nights and talk more shit than is normal, did see more great bikes than you could believe, did talk to old faces and new, did... it just goes on.
But you know what really stood out? The quality of bikes and riding. The first few CDs I went to were great, but it was early on and there was a much less 'competitive' atmosphere in that there were lots of trailies and guys just out for a casual cruise. Lots of XT500s, XL500s, TS Suzis and so on. Each year since, the kinds of bikes, the quality of the restorations, and the riding skills have improved. This year was outstanding, with some superb looking bikes and very fast people. I'm not suggesting that Classic Dirt should lose its appeal to the average Joe, but it IS interesting to see how much the level of the participation has changed over the years.
-
ok , i think we should make allllllllll the honda riders camp together, thats all ;D
how bloody great was that, 460 riders going around, grining from ear to ear, did the enduro loop on the yz , stagered down to the trails, too many people to say hi too, beers allways placed in ones hand even at 2am in the morning, great bikes and great people.
i dont think you can top it, but i hope they do.
Cheers Trev

Here's some more pics - rare stuff that was there

A rare sprint

the other side

How rare is this NSU? (apologies for the lack of light)
-
Or this Duke
-
I said to Walter that his chilli mix was like a CR125M - the hit comes on quick, has a strong chilli hit, but doesn't last long. And that Firko's was like a 490 - builds nicely and hangs in there for a good long while. He agreed with that.
-
How rare is this NSU? (apologies for the lack of light)
Even without the socialising and riding Classic Dirt is worth it's value when it brings gems like this, and the other rarities, out into public view.
-
Yeh. Here's a rare Monty that was there too, even if only a trailie
-
excuse me jc anyone know the owner of the gt80 behind the monty im interested in it thanks Michael. :)
-
there was more than a few GT80's kicking around Frosty but I never spoke to the owners sorry. Not as many XR75/80's as last year and I don't think I saw a TM75 or twinshock RM80 which makes me hope the event is held there again as I'd love to take a collection of mini's even if only for display ;)
-
if anyone spoke to them or knows who they are or you are the owner please let me know interested in complete bikes and even info that one in that photo is of alot of interest to me because its like what im doing up now and i have no good photos to go from and need a seat please let me know if they want to sell them or can send me photos thanks alot Michael. :)
-
A Big thanks to all that made this event ,it was great (only got 1 day as had quite sick wife)but really enjoyed the trip. Really big thanks to Dodgee ,Brad and Bill for the use of your bikes and hospitality.
-

Was offered a MX 80 and a YZ 80 this week for $600 the pair if your interested
-
Where do you start ???
That would have to be the best CD event yet :D
Congratulations and thanks to Suzuki Australia , VMX magazine and the Qvmx club for supporting organising and running the event :)
Green park lends itself perfectly to the event and with the wet weather leading into the event the tracks perfect.
Thanks to the generosity of Dodgee , John, Brad, jonsey, Trevor and DJ i got to ride both the MX tracks , the Enduro loops and some Trials sections ;D
Amazing bikes , great people and an atmosphere that was VMX heaven
cant wait for the next one ;)

The smiles on thier faces says it all :)
-
Hey Guys,
Can I also say a big thanks to all involved. Especially Dodgee, Old Fart, Doc, Brad, DJ, TMBill, Woody and all the VMXers I met over the weekend whilst manning the VMX Merchandise tent. Everybody had a smiling, happy face that made the long hours worthwhile. We had visitors from the UK, South Africa, NZ and from all over Australia. The event just gets bigger and bigger.
Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club boys and girls for all their work [I know they really lightened our workload], and to the ladies in the canteen for the great food and happy faces.
We seem to have broken the Classic Dirt flooding curse and it seems that we were wrong and Chris Malam is actually NOT to blame. Who would have thought!! Perfect weather, perfect track. No dust, very little mud and great sunshine.
The Legends were just that. They all had a ball. Glen Bell still hauls a#s, Gally is still as competitive as ever, Party Boy and Peter Fleming were having a ball and the crowd loved it. Porky is still inspirational and Geoff Ballard just doesn't know when to stop. And Peter Ploen and Anthony Gunter were everybodys favourites.
Thanks again to Suzuki Australia [Perry and Sou especially] Engineered Environments, Wiltec and all the other sponsors. Without them the event would never go ahead.
The standard of the bikes just had to be seen to be believed. At the first Classic Dirt they were still covered in cobwebs from being in the shed for 20 years - they have gotten better and better as the years have gone by, but this years bikes were simply world class.
And lastly to all the VMXers, both old and new, that attended. There wasn't a harsh word all weekend, no bad behaviour. You did your sport credit, which is no mean feat in this day and age. Your average footy club could learn a lot from you guys.
See you next year for CD7 [who knows where?]!!!

Bill always dresses like that. He says it attracts the ladies…
VMX42
Just to clarify ;D as the picture shows theres plenty of room for improvment, and women love a challenge ;)
-
So Bill you really are just a 'work in progress' eh?
Vally really has her work cut out for her then. Good thing she likes a challenge!!
Can't wait to see the updated [manscaped] TMBill at CD7.
Have a great trip home.
Catch ya soon,

C'mon who's got some more pics of the track action . I've started getting my IT465H finished after riding Barsby's YZ465H on the weekend i have too get mine on the track .Thanks mate and Vandy's RT1 was a nice ride i didnt know how hard i could push it around the corners till someone stuffed it up the inside and a few others joined in and it was on for a few laps on the grass track ,great fun i'm even looking for a pre 75 bike maybe .
-
Yep, made it home at 2pm today after shuffling bikes around SEQ on Monday and setting off yesterday morning. Travel is really pretty boring on your own for 18 hours. Anyway... Thanks to those who organised this show - I have spoken to a few personally, but for those I missed - a huge thank you.
Had a ball - will be back next year with another 12 months of riding under my belt ;). I'll make someone else put up the tarp (especially the banging the pegs in part) next time. It's funny - I picked up the shovel to help Noel dig the hole, turned around and the place was deserted ::) ;D ;D. Was a good laugh. Some smartass put the punctured piece of pipe in my ute, so I am going to mount it as a trophy and make it the "what are the odds" trophy or the "shit happens" trophy to be presented at the next CD. Seriously.... in a paddock that big in the middle of frickin' nowhere, what are the odds of driving a 250mm peg dead centre through a 50mm water pipe ???
-
Got to give my shout out to the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club and VMX magazine for putting on the premier event in the southern hemisphere (never been north to compare).
Great to see the usual suspects again and met some new.
The Kiwi boys were a pleasure.
I feel like i have come down from the biggest high, almost depressed coming back to reality.
Cheers all and lets do it all again next year.

My still-dis-jointed thoughts from CD6...
Qld is a long way from Yass... Its a ~3000km round trip, and I know others drove further (including Barsby who drove solo). We didn't try to set any land-speed records, but the whole trip was 6 days.
Don (DG26) and Peter (CrossedUp2) are good travelling companions - Pete plays mum ("Have you got sunscreen?" etc), Don is forever on the wisecracks. Neither trust the GPS, though. :D
I somehow managed to miss virtually everyone I specifically wanted to catch up with, but managed to talk to a stack of others.
Scored some bargains, inc a pile of not-too-used tyres (average price is about $8 each), a 75 Montesa Enduro with a Cappra motor, a YZ250G gearbox, an MX125C head and some plastics. Overall, the swap meet side of things seemed smaller than previous years.
Didn't quite clear Drunk's Hill, but I know I can do it. If I don't do it at the Nationals, then everyone is welcome to come and abuse me. Cleared the reverse direction pretty regularly though.
Seemed to be a lot fewer of the casual/'Farmer Joe' types out there. Definitely a lot fewer blokes wearing old jeans and flannos on their bikes than in previous years. Also a lot fewer scruffy bikes.
Mark 'The Crasher' Birkett tested the durability of my KDX, and it came through with only minor flesh wounds. Young Doug also rode it, and I'm glad I didn't see how fast he was on it, because I know he'd have made me look ultra-slow. :D
The stories about Mr K Smth and his slowness on a bike are true - I always thought that they were poetic licence.
Damn - I must owe Barsby some beers. But not as many as Mainline does. ;D
Vinduro course was a ton of fun, although I'm now trying to figure out what as gained by limiting access to bikes with headlights (before the event, it seemed like a sensible idea, but now I just don't get it).
Big thanks to Dennis, Don, Tony, Pete, Gerard, Graeme, Bill and Mick for the ride on their bikes. :) I had many more rides lined up, but either I forgot or the bike in question wasn't available when the time came - but thanks anyhow.
I also owe thanks to the people that helped transport stuff back to civilisation: Graeme, Snowy, Vandy and (obviously) Pete/Don.
So yeah, another top event - big congratulations and thanks to the people that made it happen.

Vandy's RT1 was a nice ride i didnt know how hard i could push it around the corners till someone stuffed it up the inside and a few others joined in and it was on for a few laps on the grass track ,great fun i'm even looking for a pre 75 bike maybe .
this ones gotta be told Hilly,
Hilly was a bit unsure as to whether the big RT1 would "bite" him or not so reluctantly headed off for a ride on the pre~75 track. well he's gone for a while so we all asumed he was doin ok and when he came back, big grin! ;D he tells us about "bangin elbows" with some 125 rider and "it was on! man!"
later that night i'm chattin with a mate of mine that bought Graemes old TM125 and he tells me he was "bangin elbows" with some guy on one of my bikes and carried on with the "it was on! man!" story.
it was almost word for word exact from two different guys that didn't know each other. 8)
sorry this pics blurry Hilly but it's the only one i have of you :)

Anyone got the pic of the OzVMX group?? of the 800 or so pictures from this event I've perused already, it appears I'm an extremely elusive type as I'm yet to find a pic anywhere to prove I WAS actually there! :D I'm not even in the background :P but eh, with 1500 odd bikes and 460 riders I'm not overly surprised either! :o 8) jeez it was good..I want to do it all again this weekend!!
-
, so I am going to mount it as a trophy and make it the "what are the odds" trophy or the "shit happens" trophy to be presented at the next CD.
A top idea 8) ;D.
-
Anyone got the pic of the OzVMX group??
I'm sorry I missed this and it was taken at Kamp Kevlar too! I was off talking to someone or other and totally forgot about it. Some of the other GOBs got in though. I also dipped out on getting a nametag. Any idea on why? ???
-
Firko, the nametags were in VMX Central...did you try there? ;)
-
Hey Guys,
I just got an email pointing out that I thanked everybody in my previous post but made a mistake in not mentioning the Sunshine club. So to correct that, here goes;
THANKS TO THE BEST CLUB WE HAVE WORKED WITH ON ANY OF THE CLASSIC DIRT EVENTS. THE SUNSHINE M/C CLUB WERE JUST FANTASTIC. NOTHING WAS A PROBLEM, AND IF THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE, THEY WERE THERE BEFORE ANYBODY EVEN HAD TIME TO MENTION IT.
So please accept my appologies for my omission. I will claim exhaustion and old age as my defence. But again, thanks to all the Sunshine guys and girls for an amazing effort that really helped with our workload. Just fantastic… [am I off the hook now?].
If that is how they always work then the Nationals in August will be another event not to miss!!!
Thanks
VMX42
-
Yeah, let me back that one up. :o
The Sunshine Club and indeed even Motorcycling Queensland were totally supportive and were, by and large, responsible for the incredibly efficient running of the event. Thanks guys (and girls)! ;D
I, for one, am now looking for excuses to go back to QLD to the Nationals... ;) (and no, I don't ride ::) )

Some of the evil GOBs. Scary eh? Frank Stanborough on the far right is 72 and almost died of prostate cancer last year. He gave a speech after recieving the KK Bling Award for his superb Manx Metisse and said that building bikes for Classic Dirt and VMX has given him a reason to get up in the morning after going into a pretty bad bout of depression after his illness. We managed to talk him into bringing the Norton along to CD5 last year and the rest is history. He worked all year to get his NSU Sportmax powered Greeves ready for CD6 but was let down at the last minute by a dodgy supplier. You couldn't shut him up talking about his Manx and almost finished Greeves to anyone who had 5 minutes to listen however. Frank even even had a couple of Margaritas and some of Basils evil Moor-Geist Schnapps and rocked on to Ajays band, especially bopping his head to the Status Quo numbers! Franks now an official GOB and Klub Kevlars resident father figure and engineering guru;D

My Boyd and Stellings almost ran but suffered a gear selection problem so it remained parked. Methinks it's going to be a pretty handy race bike and a quick comparo showed it to be even lighter than DaveTanners exotic RN works bike. A rough weigh in with two sets of bathroom scales had her at 180lbs.

Great stuff Firko and everyone for the pics :P
got this one off a modern forum:
Message: My old man went down and did a bit of work around the trail loop and mx track for belly in the week leading up to it then took his PE down on the saturday and said it was awesome! Reckons the legends race was great and couldn't believe how quick they were going round that track!
Would have been a great event there were so many good lookin bikes heading there on saturday morning!

Two of Aussie Motocrosses living legends, Laurie Alderton and Vern Grayson. You could write a book based on their adventures over 50 years of riding dirt bikes. These days as well as still racing, Vern is building an aeroplane under his house and Laurie competes on the seniors sail boarding circuit. Laurie rode well in the legends laps despite a tweaked shoulder he got while sailboarding and Vern would have had his equally famous Cheney Triumph at Conondale except for the fact that it was blocked in by the 'plane fuselage. He promised he'd bring it along next year. Pretty impressive stuff considering both blokes are well over 70!

Klub Kevlar International Social Director, Kiwi Mike Jolley had a hoot riding Jonesys Weslake BSA/Metisse, Betty and anything offered including Dave Tanners RN400. Unfortunately he lost his camera on Sunday and the shots of the RN ride are lost. Once again, if anyone knows of the cameras wherabouts, a small reward will head their way if the camera or even the card is returned. In the background a drunken and lost Magoo is seen wandering aimlessly on Betrics XR75, looking for someone to play with.
-
So far I only heard of Macca,Hilly and Barnsy who made the trip up from the south.Any others?
Also Nathan s says that the swapmeet side was a bit smaller - seems to be getting smaller with each event.
Any comments ? Any bargains found?
Cheers Brent
-
John Boag was also up from Victoria . I had a chat to the Vic guys & found them all to be top blokes . I hope they had a great time & it was good to see them put in the effort to travel the distance . I have got to say a special thank you to Bahnsy, who transported a frame back to Victoria for me.
I have to say that CD6 was probably the most fun dirt bike related weekend, that I have had in over 30 years of riding & racing bikes. A big thumbs up to everyone involved with the organizing of the event. As far as the swapmeet was concerned, it was a bit smaller than at previous Classic Dirt's. But as a few people said to me , Ebay is probably the main reason for this . Also with so much going on & things to look at , over a large area, people don't want to be stuck hanging around a stall with stuff to sell. In saying that , there was still some bargains out there . The best ones that I saw were the Pro-Fab Mag Husky swingarm that '67 Husky Pete ended up with & the VB Cappra tank that Alan from Rockhampton pounced on.

Does anyone know who was taking photos on the vinduro track water crossing and if they will be posted somewhere?

If its the same chap I spoke to ........He advised me that he was putting a Cd disc out . When I don't know

Same Old Dirt, Bikes and Fun at Suzuki Classic Dirt 6
Posted: Thursday, 11th June, 2009 : 1:07 PM - - 317 Reads -
Record numbers of local, interstate and international vintage motocross riders and enthusiasts attended Suzuki VMX Classic Dirt 6 over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, transforming Queensland’s Green Park MX complex into a celebration of the sport’s golden years.
The size of the crowd at the 6-8 June event, held at the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club’s superb, natural terrain track, underlined the view held by many regular historic motocross event attendees - Suzuki Classic Dirt is Australia’s premier vintage dirt bike event.
The event involves inviting past and present motocross and dirt bike riders, including a number of former champions, to a weekend of non-competitive vintage motocross riding.
Perry Morison, General Manager Motorcycles, Suzuki Australia, said that he was thrilled by the number of riders and the positive feedback received by Suzuki and event organisers.
“Since its inception in 2000, Suzuki has seen the merit in supporting these former MX riders; by providing the opportunity to get back into motocross in a non-competitive environment, these riders have the most fun they’ve had in years,” he said.
Catering for pre-1985 machinery, the event also gave riders the chance to test ride a full range of Suzuki’s latest 2-stroke and 4-stroke motocross models.
“Suzuki has proudly sponsored every Classic Dirt event,” he said.
“Each year we add further support by inviting former Suzuki champions to attend as our special VIP guests.
“World MX Champions Brad Lackey and Joel Robert, along with this year’s VIP, three-times Mr Motocross Anthony Gunter, have all been major hits with local MX fans”.
Organisers were overwhelmed with the weekend’s success, where vintage trials and enduro riders were also given dedicated riding areas within the magnificent Green Park riding complex.
Planning is now underway for Suzuki VMX Classic Dirt 7, scheduled for mid-2010.

Thanks Vandy i did enjoy the ride on your bike but can you get your camera looked at it makes me look fat .

Did anyone else try the Vinduro loop Sunday arvo? I thought a Nice trail ride in the bush , Faaaaark!. Help me out, tuff 8 k`s and I need a excuse for trashing the KDX I borrowed of Nathan.
-
yeah the vinduro course sounded pretty tough from what ive heard. cant wait to see photos of the tricky bits.

i took the xr had every intension of doing the loop but was having wa to much fun on the moto track

Cool, yer anything and well. So the Vinduros where also well represented?
-
I had a go on the easy vinduro loop on Sunday arvo. All the really hard bits had been bypassed and it was ok.
But early in the first session on Saturday even on the easy loop there were some very slippery down hill parts. I had a few minor spills and one time ended up at the bottom of a muddy gully. I was absolutely buggered.
I couldnt get the bike started again and luckily the bloke who had given the talk about the vinduro loop at the riders meeting came by. He helped a fella on an Ossa that was stuck halfway up the hill then came back and got my bike started. I owe that man a beer.
It was definitely a lot harder than i expected but the memories are worth it.
-
mmmm Snowy..I did the the full loop on Saturday morning but it was far from a nice easy ride in the sticks :o When I got to the top of the mountain (whichever mountain that was ???) there was only about 4 or 5 sets of fresh tracks at most. Mind you descending the mountain was sheer bliss and some of the tight twisty bits in the lower paddocks and the many creek crossings were absolute heaven and super picturesque. I cheated though and took the RL, I was passed in the lower sections but I had the near all the tracks to myself excepting another fast guy on a PE400. At one stage I was thinking "oh joy! I must be insane!!, if I break down or get stuck up here it's gonna take me all bloody weekend to get me and my bike out!!" ::) fortunately that's all the motivation I need to press on..mission completed 8) Bottom line, the enduro loop was testing. It felt more like 180k's not just 8 but it was also a hell of lot of fun ;D ;D ;D I wouldn't like to ride it all day or I'd be in bed very early that night and riding the next day could be out of the question :D
-
I only did the Enduro loop on Saturday.
First time out, I got about 800m in, and thought "If this is the easy stuff, there's no way that I'll be trying the Hard, particularly considering that I'm by myself". So I took all of the easy options from there.
Second time out, I discovered that I had actually been on the first hard option... So on that loop, I did all of the hard bits and didn't have a drama.
I was VERY slow and cautious though. :-\
Still fun.

I'm presuming the above RT1 is Vandys. I had a bit a gander at it and it looked the goods, a real wolf in sheeps clothing.
I reckon it needs a proper black with red or yellow pinstripe tank to set it off but that's just my taste. It's good to see guys use RT1/DT1s as they're good things if set up properly.
I'm pissed off with myself for missing the above forum group photo shoot. I was off chatting with god knows who and got back 5 minutes later. Oh well, next year maybe :(
-
Hey Snowy
Ribbo and I were on the enduro loop very early on Saturday , it had not had many bikes over it at that time and it was awesome.
We rode it again later and it was very muddy and it was even better. The uphill section with the creek directly in front of it that kinked left and then right was as good as it gets.
Each time we came around to this spot there were a number of riders laying on that particular section trying to get down to have another shot, some of the slides back down to the creek were quite amusing.
The very steep down hill section was a bit tricky on the auto's due to the lack of engine braking , but on the over hand it was fantastic.
Great loop. If the MX track wasnt so good we would have stayed on the loop all day.
Shoey
-
Mark,
No it (lowered RT1) was the other one. I don't know the rider but I spoke at some length to Gary, who had a hand in building it, & told me many of its tricks/'secrets'.
Spoke for even longer w Vandy about his too. Both guys very friendly, helpful & informative. Great to see such pre-70 bikes out there.
Just sooo much to take in that day. Fantastic.
-
I thought the Enduro loop was great. I enjoyed it so much on the Sunday that I never made it back to the MX track. The mud certainly made steering 'optional' and my KX (with Dolphin-torch headlight) is now one big pile of mud. I'm guessing my bike will look gumby if those creek crossing photo's do surface..
I did one enduro loop - the Hard sections, with a guy on a PE. Half way up the long hill he disappeared as I struggled up in first gear. Next year I'll bring a new rear tyre and I'll show him..
To be able to ride the MX and enduro tracks on the one weekend and on the one bike was fab.
Thanks organisers!
-
Thanks Walter , glad you enjoyed it.
-
The 112 RT1 is owned by Mitch Simmons. His dad is Gary.
The bike looses nothing in straight line speed to my dads side pipe 360, which is saying something.

I too would like to thank everyone who was involved in CD6,what a fantastic weekend, even got the XS 650 a little air bourne over drunks hill.{once was to many!!} Had ago first up on saturday at the Vinduro track on the Dr500 and got bogged half way up the steep hill, then had the fun of slipping off the edge with the bike on top of me,was glad to get out in one piece.{Knew i should have brought a new tyre!!} Had the Rm125 going great at last until the head gasket went in a cloud of white smoke and steam.Looking forward to the next CD7.Cheers.
-
Jimmy, was that you :) sorry I was enjoying myself
It was late in the arvo Sunday and Brad alot wants to do a loop of the Enduro circuit ;)
So what bike does he take Cr 250 fox shocks and all ::) we get to the first slippery down hill and sharp left no problems ( hells gully ) then proceed to bog gully up hill .I sit on bike and point try that out ( ruts and grooves all over the place ( shoey favourite spot ) no effort at all .... I cheated and took the BYE PASS .......rest of loop was a breeze
It must of been close to 3 pm and the track was pretty well cut up but still enjoyable .

No worries... It would be hard not to have fun on a loop like that. I just wish my bike was running nicely so that I could have roosted (or tried!) up some of those hills. Already planning for next year - no what State hosts it..

Thanks to all the people who made this event what it was (if you were there you already know) but if it wasnt for the hard working team of VMX Mag, QVMX and sponsors like Suzuki Aust and Wiltec and others, we of the, "just turn up with a bike on the ute and $20 in the pocket" couldnt have this much fun with our pants on, but yet again the "CD" theme proves thats its not always about the fastest riders, the most expensive bikes, the whos who of vmx or the sheep stations because at the end of the day none of that matters.
It's an event to have as much fun as you possible can, and you can have alot of fun if you want, just remember that at 4:30am a 'walking esky' can do anything, until the next morning.
karen and myself have so many people to thank that if I/we miss someone out please dont be offended.
Brad, Lynette and family, thank you so much, without your help, hospitallity and generosity we wouldnt be able to this great event.
John and Sue, again as above, your help and generosity was overwhelming.
Doc, thanks for the help, I hope the early mornings werent to much of a problem.
Dodgey, the 'camp-mother' always there to help as was Oldfart.
All the Kiwi Team
Ajay and the band for singing happy birthday, Firko and the KK boys, for looking after Karen.
All the Forum Farts I got to meet, drink, ride and bullshit with.
Thanks for all the good times.
I dont care where the next "CD" is, count me in, I'll be there.

Its a great bike and as you can see it had alot of track time. I should have charged a fee, i would have made a heap. Everybody who rode it liked it to. Its one of the bikes im riding at the nationals.

That big Maico was absolutely singing. You can just hear when a 2 stroke is running well and that was possible the sweetest sound I heard all week end.

Awesome DJ. You got a pic of my old man on his 360.

Bert takes a better photo than you Brad ;) ...... He looked so bloody pleased on the side-piper

TM Bill is a bike tart.
so is my brother and his mate Chris.
thanks for the pics Dj.
i'll forward the ones of my bikes with the forementioned biketarts onto them.
for two blokes that only just became aware of the CD format and "old bikes", my brother and his mate had an absolute ball all weekend riding the old dungers as they both are used to their modern CRF450's, yet both came in, smiles wide as, each time they'd been out for a spin. they bludged the odd ride and were offered seat time on other guys bikes, then sunday morning, they were first dressed {with no bikes of thier own on site!} signed up to ride the Suzuki demo bikes.
it was great so see two guys get the most out of thier Classic Dirt experience.
very cool 8)

Hello everyone,I've just got back from CD6 and a couple of days R&R on Gold coast and can say it was totally worth the 3894 kms on the ute's odometer. It was great to catch up with all my old NSW &QLD mates and make several new ones at a venue that I can only describe as breathtaking.A special thanks to Suzuki Australia,VMX Magazine and the Sunshine Coast MCC for their brilliant organisation. I'd also like to thank Ribbo,Hilly,Bahnsy,Dave Russell and QVMX for helping me fix the "air hammer" on Saturday. And lastly thank you to Bruce Mac,Gonzo,Stephen Gall,co-pilot Harry and the Kenilworth Hotel! CD 7 at Conondale ? Count me in. Regards, Chris Cormack-happy mexican.

Got up this morning to listen in to the live audio from the US MX at High Point and was sitting thinking it's a whole week since CD7. This time a week ago I was wandering around checking out bikes, drinking coffee from the coffee guy and just taking in the whole scene. And there was still more riding to do...
I don't mind where CD7 ends up, but I'd love to ride Conondale again. My kidney probs left me unable to really go fast on the big track, but I still did some laps and had a ball, and the small track being without bumps suited me fine so I got in a whole bunch of time there (wish someone had a photo - I think I actually remembered to have my elbows up!).
I remember feeling especially good driving up from Landsborough on Friday morning - these were all roads I used to ride on my roadbike back in the 80s and it was great to be there again. Add in the scenery, the warm sun, and the knowledge that we'd soon be at Conondale, and well... it just doesn't come any better.
The drive home just slipped by as we spent half the time talking about it all or just remembering.
Yep, it was really something special. And now all these great stories and photos on the forum to keep the memories going. They sure made me feel better when I checked them out during lunch breaks last week. It was such a come down to find myself driving a desk in Canberra's cold again.

What a treat it was seeing Peter Ploen ride again. First & last time I saw him ride was at the huge Trans Tasman meet at Nerang in 74. Awesome track & every OZ MXer was there along w quite a few Kiwis.
Does anyone remember it?
For me three riders stood out that day - the Flood bros for their sheer speed & bravado off the huge downhill jumps, & Peter Ploen for his radical cornering style. The corner speed he maintained on the RN just blew me away. Lay it over, flick it round & pull the trigger. Never saw anyone corner like him.
Even last Sat, to see how early he got on the power coming out of corners (like all champs) was a treat. Seemed strange seeing him on a Maico, but every time I saw him on the bike he had a huge smile.
Would have been nice to see Gunter on an RM370 or even 75 RH (w a bit of suspension travel) instead of the 74 RH, but I ain't complaining. What a day it was!

Here's a final few odd photos of the Kevlar Kompound at CD6. Because we all live in either Sydney or NZ we entrusted the logistics of setting up the kompound to our Queensland based mate, Paul Chippendale. Chippy and his amazing family did a stellar job in not only organising the marquee, BBQ and all the small things that make a home away from home livable but also went overboard to make it all so seemless, despite a heavy business schedule and some family illness issues. All of us "Good 'Ol Boys (thanks Ross, we love the name :-*) are indebted to Paul and his great family. Big kudos also go to Ken, Alistair and Jeff for their belief in the CD concept and hard work all weekend. Believe me when I say that none of CD6 would have happened if it wasn't for those three blokes. Thanks must also go to Suzuki Australia and their belief in and support of Classic Dirt. I had a yarn with the Suzuki staff and they were ecstatic at the roll up and enthusiasm of the vintage population. Thanks must also go to what I believe to be the most efficient and happy club I've seen in recent times, the Sunshine Coast M/C. Their enthusiasm, profesionalism and no bullshit approach to the event ranged from preparing four outstanding courses to making sure the showers were hot and the toots had plenty of toilet paper. Kudos also to the local service providers, especially the Conondale school PC for operating a great canteen with great food at a reasonable price. When I asked them if I could borrow some dishwashing detergent to wash my chili pots, the ladies insisted on washing them for me. Too cool.
Lastly, thanks to all of the old and new friends who dropped by the Kompound throughout the weekend either for a feed, a beer or a good old fashioned yarn. There are way too many of you to mention each individually but you made a bunch of old fart Kevlars very proud to be a part of the VMX community. There was nary a negative word or shit sling thrown all weekend. Thanks also to those who travelled long distances to be a part of the event, especially our Kiwi friends Mike Jolley (attending his sixth CD!) TM Bill and the lovely Valeria and DJ and the equally sweet birthday girl Karen. I know there were more Kiwis but my memory of their names is drowned in a sea of Kozel, sorry folks!
Ray Ryan was a genius on many levels but the Classic Dirt concept is his legacy to our movement. I honestly believe that the Classic Dirt concept will become an international phenonemon over the next few years just as Ray envisioned. We couldn't give a flying f#*k where CD7 is held next year. All we know is that we'll be there with as much enthusiasm and sense of fun as we have for the last six. Bring it on.

It was great to see Klub Kevlars own Mel Gibson rise above his recent marriage split and jet over for a little Margarita action in the Kompound, a few laps on Black Betty and a quick scoot through the swapmeet looking for parts for his Maico project. He picked up a tidy early frame and some donkey grips before helicoptering out at sparrow fart on Sunday morning.

JC i was at that Trans Tasman race in Nerang. I was still at school and lived just over the hill from the track and walked to the race. The best aussies and kiwis were there and i remember a great battle between Moss Smith and Trever Flood both YZ360b mounted and Ploen on an RN400. Whatever happened to Moss Smith.. any kiwis remember him?

From Melbourne to Conondale car ran fine, no problems with the trailer and given the variation in weather the bikes even ran fine, but the camera shat itself. If anyone has some shots of a 83 KX500 or a 78 RM400 (Both numbered 31) it would be really appreciated. As it stands, the only momento's that i have is a T shirt and a stubby holder.
-
I couldn't make this one but will be sure to pull out all stops to get to CD7.
There's a couple of good raps on CD6 in the July Cycle Torque that's now out at your local bike dealer.
