This is the start of my TSM125 vinduro special with a fresh coat of silver and gloss spashed on only moments ago ;D pretty riveting stuff eh but they all have to start somewhere..the scrap bin in this instance :D

this is the bike I am hunting the RM125S/M sidecover for although it's actually neither an M or an S..a little fugly to start with but a bit of grinding and shaping has it okay :)

stay tuned.. :P

im interested doc
go the rat
-
What is that frame Doc ??? a modifed TM frame ?
-
Paul it had me interested enough to try and rebuild it to it's former glory and from what I can see the mod was done back in the day around '75ish. Bill, yup, the frame is TM125K but the rear is 100% fabricated. I thought at first it simply had an RM rear cut but it's not. I took a square, a tape and string line and sure as eggs it's straight and symetrical enough for me. The shock angle is a little excessive but I'll give it a go before I go changing the swingarm shock mounts just incase by some fluke it suits a flyweight like myself. I don't know if you ever remember the T&M Eng. Elsinores of the 70's ridden by Americans Bruce McDougal and/or RonTurner, anyway it's this T&M theme I'm using on this bike so hopefully it will have the same eye catching appeal but in more the early Suzuki shade of orange rather than the very orange orange they used way back when;D
here's the T&M bike

If it was in NZ Doc I'd swear that frame was mine!
-
Really Brent! :D pretty sure I have another similar one on the way both thanks to Cyclone Sully in CQ but I was thinking of doing the TS185 deal with that one since I need another 125 like a hole in the head ::) It's tidier with the laid forward mounts but not in quite the same fabrication style as this one. It's only rubbish if you can't use it and while they are modified they're still certainly useable for projects and utilizing other otherwise near useless/worthless parts ;D this one gets the '77 TS125 with the RMS gear and the TS/TM125 motor goes back into the post classic TS to keep it pre'72 dirt track eligable..well sorta..so long as they overlook the TM bits ::)
-
Doc I have a TM125 pipe , I "think" it is at GMCs Shed with some other pipes I left there for him to mull over.....about a year or two or more ago.... ::) Tim
-
Thanks for the offer Tim, if you wish to sell the pipe you have a buyer ;) if you happen to spot any useable RM/TM seats and I'll proably buy those as well ;D
-
Doc have tracked down a seat for you. Is on a RM125S (Looks like a TM engine???) Basically complete bike (except for pipe bugger!) but in pieces. Yep has the plastics. Working on price you interested.
-
Is the Pope catholic.
-
too right stew, is the bear catholic and does a pope sh*t in the woods! :D
for sure I'm interested Tim! ;)
-
On to it will try for expectable price
-
thanks regardless Tim, one never knows if one does never enquires about such things ;)
fitted a new front tyre and bolted up the XL250 forks to zee hybrid today. DR500 front guard found a new home and the shocks I dug up are Honda something or other :P had to replace the upper eyes from 8 to 10mm but ya get that using the shonky honda bits :-X Seems to be coming together okay and they sure don't come any cheaper for a tin arse like me ;D
(http://oszfaq.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pWDsE1gkflsLffFJJKtT63r8TWIWp_P0cj_7wfREJAFmaplY8hFwcMqz4992gn9fICyFcSZZV3dZchw_m8-JqIg/9th%20march%202009%20008.jpg)
swingarm had a small mod on each side just back from the pivot..never knew there was a problem with them :-\
-
Doc maybe the swinging arm becomes weaker with the shocks laid down ???
-
I'm wondering why you haven't made/shouted yourself a bike stand yet, they make working on them much more bearable.
-
To get the most outta that back tyre Doc you'll have to drop in a worked over TM400 ;D.
-
Loz, I move the bikes around too much due to limited space to use bike stands. I don't like lifting bikes as my back is the weakest link hence I simply fit side stands and all is swell ;D
Bill, just looking at the angles I'd reckon that's what they might have thought too but the more you look the less it seems a problem. I'd rather them not be there but since she'll be a 'vinduro' a little extra weight is fine. I can't take them off so they can stay :D
MX..now it's funny you should say that as initially I tried shoehorning in my spare 400C donk ;D It goes in fine but the selector shaft meant the frame would need some major surgery and the motor would hang out to the right a little to get sprockets lining up. Not exactly the most desirable setup and I highly doubt it'd ever be a success unfortunately. After riding Dave Tanner's RN400 the only way I could describe what it felt like was the power of my 400C but in a lightweight TM125 chassis. Ever since I had grand plans but they came crashing down when the practical stuff took over from the theoretical delusions :D I still have a TM250 chassis that may intermingle with the 400 so all is not lost :P on the original note, funnily enough the tyre works well on anything from 125-400. I normally have it reserved for the 400 but I ran it at Coff's DT last year on the TM125 and I never had to give the tyres another thought..3rd overall, it really was that good :)

-
Ummm the jack in the stand does the lifting(I have some simple/cheap plans if you want them) or you can use a static stand with a ramp to get the bike off and on. If your back is shot means no more endless bending over
-
eh thanks Loz but the stands aren't for the garage..as I said I move them around too much to use stands. As for working on them I just sit on the floor if it's low and stand if it's high and a milk crate for my ass if it's inbetween ;) I was making lift stands many moons ago and selling them locally but the profit margin is crap. I need about a dozen stands for the bikes that'll be up here with me but milk crates tarted up will do for those too. Call me lazy :D
-
okay update time, an hour or so to kill today so a little more done. Imagination is no longer needed for the colours/asthetics department. Seems to fit together well enough to keep this little black duck happy 8) No show bike and the finish is far from perfect but eh, I stuffed up anyway in my haste as I'm using a '77 TS125 tank ::) bloody idiot ::) hard to get good help these days! :-X the TS tank offers up a bit more capacity but has more of an early RM shape to it. It's got reserve too, good for dummies like me ;D DS tailight, painted the crappy old bars, levers/grips on and I guess now I'll have to hunt up an orange preston petty headlight to wire up and complete the picture. I love these bitsa's, whole lot easier to do than a resto and when finished you won't find another like it :D

'tis slowly getting there :) taking a little longer than I thought and I still have an airbox to make and ignition and wiring to route..or root..whatever ::) anyway a seat..I need a seat as it sort of seriously lacks one :P..hmmmm..an' a rear tyre...chain...ummm..best get back to it.. :P

-
Doc,Thats come up a bloody treat :o Well done ,I might have to do a Honda version now i;ve seen that ;)
-
thanks KB, it's not a million bucks and it still needs some freshening up of the motor but eh, used a whole heap of bits and an otherwise useless frame and it's not yellow ;D I reckon with the TS125 flywheel ignition it'll mellow it right out. Imagine the ground clearance with an up pipe! there is such a thing ya know..they're era and they're rare but they did and do exist and I need to do some sweet talking ;)
-
looking great Doc, I'm always impressed by the final product you turn out.
-
Hey Doc, that really is looking good! the whole design/colours are fantastic 8)
Love these projects, don't know why I haven't read this tread before??
Nice to see you used a real quality product in the front forks. ;D
-
Paul, still a little way to go but yeh, it's different without being different ;) The original shock mounts are still in place also so there is a 'chance' it could still make pre'75 with the motor it has fitted. Don't know what the regs are on frame mods but it's all the same geometry with a little added weight so there's no advantages ;)
:D obviously a honda man MX? thanks..sorta...:P Honda front wheel too and infact you are quite possibly correct as I rate these forks as some of best from japan pre'75 (excepting the bling stuff of course) I'd like to hunt down a matching rear rim and it really shats me that I sold off 2 perfectly good motosport rear wheels complete for next to nothing last year ::)
-
Doc,
As usual you never cease to amaze me, is it just me or is that carb mounted a loooong way back? ???
-
Hey Doc, what is the yellow bike in the background of the previous page
Brett
-
thanks evo, the carb is a loooong way back but that's because of the Hodaka Super Combat reed block. Makes the airfilter box construction a bit of a task and I may remove the valve until I have the motor running 100% sweet anyway ;)
oldyzman, the yellow beasty be a '69 TS250-I
-
still on the topic of wasting time,
I was sniffing around thinking I may have an illusive complete spare NOS TM125 $100US+ shipping on ebay chainguide kicking around to fit to my LRT (little red tomato) but alas, the dog barked and I woke up ::) anyway it made me think I better do something or my chain WILL fly off and smash my $5000 100% perfectly intact magneto cover :o perish the thought!! :'( anyway in my rumagings I came up with this PE175 item and how easy was it!! Drill 2 x 6mm holes, tap a thread, make 2 x 6mm spacers and bolt it straight up 8) beeeaudiful! Might look a little funny but eh, I'm after some functionality (think that's a word) this is going to take one heck of a derailment or rock mashing to bend and I'll sleep well tonight ;D
(http://oszfaq.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pRVoOXKQ-moTL_K-OVmDYrOIKqO_SfQ3AmdVVLo901X8r2GbqGz-zgmpRfn8_gyiyHnWX5qujZPM5icKdhffd-A/15th%20march%202009.jpg)
photo is a little deceptive, the stay on the rear is actually 4mm thick aluminium and heavy duty and not as thin as it appears.
-
ingenuity and functionality -it will last a life time.
well done 8)
-
once again Doc, simply brilliant!
you have an awesome knack/ability to turn something from a pile of bits 8)
very nice 8)
-
And in the time it takes most of us to think about it! 8)
-
if ya want some brand new ones of those plates, i have the CAD drawing of them so that you can either cut your own or just punch it into a CNC machine. have both types (T - rollers) (x-1 roller and one nylon block) and could also arrange (z- 2 nylon blocks)
-
a little lateral thinking helps ppls and, not being overly anal about era or legality for vmx helps as well ;)
Leith thanks but used will do. Otherwise it'll make the rest of the bike look second rate ;)
check the fuel tank in the auction below. I made my final bid and didn't expect I'd win but what a great little paint job..file that for future reference I think ;)

The nice tank sold for $163.71 AUS -$77.05 GB.
ToxicCrow Cool name for a painters. ;D
cheers Alison
-
yeah I was watching 247 ;) thing is the paint was brand new unmarked and very nice but the tank also came with a new tap and it had also had the liner treatment done so the price isn't too bad all things considered. I went to about $120 with my bidding. Anything over that price I'd prefer to have my own tank done locally in my own colours, after all, it is just a TS125 tank and nothing overly special or sought after but in my eyes it was quite an appealing paintjob ;) I don't know if you looked but he also had a repainted '76 TS100 tank (std suzuki blue nothing special) and that sold for well over $300au :o the vintage market place is a very unpredictable animal :D
-
$300 we bit of madness. ::)
Don't suppose the red one would have fitted the TM250?
you have probably answered that before for me :-\
Cheers alison.
-
Alison no, it wouldn't fit the TM250 (easily). You could use a TS250 tank, different rear mount would need sorting and it may look a little odd on a '74 and they aren't as slim as the later TM250 tanks so preferably you'll be wanting the real deal ;) I don't know of any sorry...
-
Hey Doc,
Here's a whole bike with another special lookin tank ;D 8)

getting the money this one. 8)

can we get a pic of the finished time waster yet ?? :o

That thing on ebay looks crap. What's the chrome look side covers caper?
I think he's a Harley tragic.

You are probably right in saying he is a Harley tragic.... he has even painted the frame covers gloss black to resemble the Sportster oil tank :D :D

Each to his own ;D I be happy to be getting $2928.85 for it so far :o
-
agreed the paintwork doesn't really suit but to say the bike looks crap is not seeing the woods for the trees. Respray the tank and return the fork lowers to the oem finish instead of crud black and you'd have a pretty tidy not far off original '76 TS250. Personally I'd fit the early model high plastic colour matched guards to give it a bit more red but I'd keep the chrome guards as they're worth squillion in really good nic ;)
-
Looks way older than the A model it is
"the cherry red TM style tank and black engine with diaphragm carb"
Cant say i like the styling. belongs on a J or K or even an L that came with those chrome guards and a big fat leg spreader tank.
and its got bloody road tyres on it, not even trials universals :D
-
Hmm, s'pose I was a bit harsh with my description DR, but why give it a look that is totally off the mark. No one, well not in Australia anyway would be interested in buying it the way it is. Am I wrong?
As vmx247 said, everyone to his own, but it's not for me.

Sometimes that's the sad part about it :(
1:If you don't ask, you won't know. :P
2:Buying a bike and then only to be told that it can't race in that era >:(
3:New vmxer's can be put off for life. :o

-
I didn't mean to sound overly critical of your comments pmc, while I liked the 125 duster paintjob I don't really like what he's done to the 250. It would turn off a lot of people and the chrome or polishing is a little over the top but you have to admire the effort and the quality of the work. A few nos covers and some nice new paint and you'd have a bling 250 albeit a little expensive to start with. $3600au it sold for and the buyer, if you look at his recent purchases, seems a bit of a Suzuki enthusiast ;)
-

been watching that ebay TS250 Alison but I feel it is already at top $ for what it is. No doubt it will probably go up some more I'd say. Not a bad thing at all but I feel anything over $800 is too much in todays market ;) Seems there are cheapy TS250's and there are expensive bling TS250's but rarely do you see much inbetween. The bike in this auction is such a bike and hence it will attract more bids I'd reckon.
Below is a pic of a TS250 that I'll have in my hot little mitts in about a week or so, over $500 less than the bike on ebay and it's good runner ;) another time waster ;D
-
Another one -looks heavy to me,or maybe its too much black. :-\
Like the freight to Perth ,you would think we live on the moon ;) ;D and not knowing who the freight company is,strange. :o
Bit of air in the front tyre may get a bit of extra money ;D
What do you think ???

not a bad thing either Alison but yes, very heavy metal. Mind you replace the steel lowered clunker type forks and whack on a set of alloy rims and you'd shed a kilo or 2 (a kilo or 2 off the bike that is unless it's a really hot day then you may shed more :P) I think the front tyre looks weird as it's one of those low profile chinese cheapies from a pitbike. I bought one for the front of the SL100 and I can't give it away quick enough now :D ya never know unless you try but I should have known better..$20 doesn't buy much of a tyre :D
-
Thanks DR ,it shows there not as rare as rocking horse poop, with the amount of them around at the moment up for grabs 8)
Got me stumped as to how the fellow in Tassie thinks he will get 14k for his zuki,
he can only try I suppose ;D
cheers Alison
-
bit of a story behind that Tassie seller apparently. He's fishing and one never knows their luck ;) rumour has it both the TM250 and the MX may end up in a bike museum if passed in.

the lift stands are okay for bikes without downpipes and if you have room but sadly a lot of mine don't fit the catagory VMX. I can honestly say bike stands do absolutely nothing for me ::) A milk crate can be cut to suit the pipes and it can double as a seat and a storage device on the way too and from, much more functional than a dedicated bike stand of any type and best of all..free! ;)
-
yer yer use the milk crate then -support the farming industry ;D ;)

suppose this can't be run in the pre 75 class then if its a January 75 model.
Is it Jan 75 Doc,? also whats the different visual appearance of this one to a Dec 74 model ???
thanks Alison

rear shock- frame mount move forward on frame - shock mount on swing arm moved forward - stickers on tank

ditto :D your swingarm should arrive friday Stew ;)
