I see that there are both WP (WhitePower) and FOX shocks were avalaible for the 83/84 KTM's.
Of the 2 shocks, what was considered to be the better option in the day?

i know of a magazine test comparison between WP and ohlins but not with Fox.

I would think that White Power would be better than Fox. A good indicaion is that both White Power and Ohlins are still making shocks for motocross bikes today.

i am pretty sure fox are making monoshocks for modern dirt bikes now. i might be wrong though

They make mountain bike shocks and some road bike shocks but never seen a modern dirt bike Fox shock.

one of the reasons they stoped the dirt bike shocks in mid 80's was that because the stock single shocks were so much better and people didnt want to spend big dollars on a aftermarket one when they can just tune the stock one to suit. thats what Bob? Fox said in an old article i found somewhere.

Ohlins and WP continued to sell shocks to suit motocross bikes through the 80's even tho the bikes changed dramatically every couple of years. I think Fox just got left behind in the ever advancing technology of the motocross world.

yeah and they were still working out of a small factory. they made good parts though. these days its such a breeze to restore fox suspension components as you can get all the parts and they are standard sort of sizes and they were built and designed well back then.

That's true and i can't believe how simple the Fox Airshock is internally and how well they work for what they are. Most of the damping is controlled by a main jet from a Holley carby!

yeah i know, i was reading an article today from 79 and the writer said the airshox should last the lifetime of the bike or even longer. Thor Lawson can even make you whole brand new replica ones if you want, but they end up expensive that way.

OK, so this shock owes the new owner $375 Aussie, I doubt that you could rebuild an original shock  for that much?

How much for that in a YSS Walter?

Rebuilding an old shock is $90  till what ever . It always depends on its condition. Sometimes making a hybrid is the best option . For example rechroming and grinding a shaft is $ 85.00 where a new YSS shaft is only $50 . Same goes for bodies, pistons and seal blocks .

my currency converter says $261 AU plus shipping. and yeah it depends. if your cluey with shocks and know where to get parts and can do the majority of the owrk youself except for maybe the final assembly and regas it can work out a good deal. it all starts to get expensive when you have to pay someone for labour and time to design/calculate things out/look for parts etc which is quite often what is needed when trying to do up old shocks that you can not get parts for and are trying to improve/update etc.

with the fox shocks,Thor Lawson can pretty much help with all parts plus there is another guy who specializes in twin clickers.

So do you think it was worth $280 odd dollars Walter?

well i definitely do especially since its new. you gotta remember that this is a correct vintage period high quality shock from back in the day.

it would have cost more than $280AU back then. i was surprised to see some old prices of airshox back then and they were around the $400pr mark then. imagine what price a new equivalent would be worth now. possibly cheaper these days when you can just chuck a block of billet alloy in machine and a computer will control a machine to cut it out, but i still think they would be exepensive as the prices of raw materials like metals has gone up a lot in past few years.

Unless we make them in big numbers , there is no way to match that . So if you like the fox concept , for $280.00 go for it .
