Just out of interest, be nice to get a handle on what sort of red (or silver) we got lurking out there in the Honda forumland. And maybe what red we had back in the day?
My list is short: I had an XL250 in the mid seventies that I reworked into a motocrosser (laid down shocks, fork extender kit, mikuni carb, polished ports, cr250 seat, and all painted honda racing red of course). I never raced it but bushbashed it for several years around Mt Kuring-gai on northern outskirts of Sydney (and at Hungry Creek).
These days, I started off with an '83 CR250RD in '05, then moved on to a 1986 CR250RG in '07(which just plain makes it even more fun to race). I race ACT club rounds (Old School and Over 35s) and various grasstracks events around southern nsw. and HEAVEN....eventually.... I'm 49 (and should - as with all of us - know better).
So what else is out there? And how often do they get raced?

thanks guys - great to see what we all got between us. i reckon there's every model covered just about thru to '89 (important for any self respecting honda vmx fraternity). i am of course well jealous of several (most) of you individually, the size of your collections....but share in it vicariously i guess. look forward to meeting youse at a race track soon, to put it to those rotten yellow/white/green and other colour-lovers!
-
Twisty, I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner.
My usual ride(s) are White, Yamaha 500's or yellow, Zook TM125's. But then my XR200 powered KTM is red, in colour and motor!
The TL's with big bore kits were a blast. The TL125 became the bike it should have been. The 250 taken out to 350 was too powerfull for trials (for me) but the best play bike ever. It would climb anything! It had all the power you could need and would find traction in the worst places. I eventually found a 350 motor that had been bored and stroked to 420 (I think) but the TL was stolen before I made the deal.
I rode trials but much the same way I ride MX. Somewhere at the back of a C grade field.
I loved to pull up at the local big hill in Wgton in the early 80's (Spooky creek for any wgton kiwis) in runners with jeans tucked into my socks and no peak on my helmet. I'd stall it, and nearly fall off, next to someone on a PE, IT or such and say "Geez that hill looks pretty steep, do you reckon I'll get up there"?
They'd usually say to the effect of "no mate it's a bit too steep and loose". I'd let them go and wait till they ran out of go half way up, start the TL and ride up to where they had stopped, stop beside them and say " you're right mate, this is a c*%t of a hill isn't it", then procede to carry on up the hill! I loved doing that. Of course having 4psi in a two ply tyre and all that 4 stroke torque helped a lot.

When are you Honda loving freaks ever going to learn & get some real red in your shed ? :D I was once a Honda fan , until I realized that they were just treating me like a fool . Thats when I saw the light & bought a Maico 8) . What sort of a company spends a fortune on bikes & top riders to win the World 500 mx titles in '79 & '80 and then doesn't even sell an open class motocross bike to the public ? ??? When they finally do build one to sell in '81 , it is a lemon anyway ::). Takes them until '83 to make a good big bore . In doing so they effectively bypassed the the open class for the entire vintage & evolution movement . Lets face it , the smaller capacity classes are just for midgets & learners and open class is where the action really is at ;D . Considering the age of most VMX competitors , if you weigh under 80 KGs , you have either got an AIDS related illness or have got a bad case of worms :D. That is why we need a big bore to lug our fat arses around .
-
You just have to ride a 125 like you stole it. Thats where a Honda wins hands down. Thrash it all day and park it till next time. Im 90 kg (big boned), and my little 74 and 80 125's drag me around all day!
I reckon you are secretly angry that you sold all your good bikes :D
-
ooooh I so much agree Husky. In another era - loved my CR250 but my YZ makes it look bad - and the extra poke certainly helps with the extra kg's!!!

The two examples of 125 Honda models that Brad mentions were definitely good bikes . I , unfortunately bought a new CR125 M3 in 1977 & it was an absolute dog >:(. What annoyed me was Honda's advertising of the time suggesting you were getting something similar to what the factory guys were winning on the year before . Suzuki did the same thing by implying that the TM400 Cyclone was based on what DeCoster was riding . At least Suzuki made a TM400 to sell to the public . I think that the European companies were a bit more honest & actually made production bikes based on their worksbikes . I don't know if Honda ever made a production bike that was even close to the previous year's factory bike . If they would have made an RC replica big bore in '78 , '79 or '80 , I probably would have bought one & I think that a lot of other people would have as well .
-
The closest production honda evr made to a works bike was the '83 RD models, absolutely awsome every one of them, I am doing my 125RD up at the moment (Mugen Kit, Marzochi forks/ohlins shock)and Im going to go modern racing on it and I reckon it will stack up against any modern 125..... ;D
-
From all reports, Suzuki shouldn't have sold the TM400 seeing as it is top of the list of worst bikes ever.
At the end of the day you can pick any manufacturer to bits as they all had good and bad bikes. Either side of the 81 490 Maico is the best example.
All manufacturers have stretched the truth as well regarding how close they were to the factory bikes. Maybe the reason why the European bikes were close to their own factory bikes was more the fact that they didn't throw as much money into R & D the way the jap's did.
E74,with regards to the 125 rd, i did the modern thing on mine( just a stocker though), great bike for sure but i think there is no substitute for 25 years of R&D.
-
the RC replica is nice - where did you score the photo from?

I pinched the RC replica picture from the MXTRAX.UK vintage forum :http://www.mxtrax.co.uk/nice-1980-rc500-replica/forum/viewtopic/60/284597?siteid=6&3 (http://www.mxtrax.co.uk/nice-1980-rc500-replica/forum/viewtopic/60/284597?siteid=6&3)
It is the place I go to when OZVMX becomes boring with too many guys waffling on about TS & PE Suzukis & DT Yamahas . I wish there was a website called OZ vintage shitbox where they could go to instead ::).
Anyway , the Pommy website link with the RC replica story, has a link back to a US website called : honda-elsinore.com , where it is the feature bike of the month .

Said harshly but true.
-
Yamaha & Suzuki do have a lot of relevance to vintage motocross in Australia , because they actually did make some motocross models ;).
-
E74,with regards to the 125 rd, i did the modern thing on mine( just a stocker though), great bike for sure but i think there is no substitute for 25 years of R&D.
I have a 2007 RM125 and they havent changed since the 2002 model so I am only trying to catch 19 years of technology. ::) so whith my new rebuild I reckon I can carve the same lap times (Grass Track that is ;)) on old red as on it , then again I may just be old or intoxicated :-\
-
I was of the understanding that modern 125 two stroke mxers , with the benefits of power valves etc , were making more power now than old school 250 air cooled mxers . I would have expected an '07 model 125 to hose an '83 model .
-
Mark, you are a stirrer my friend! As the saying goes, "A lot of truth is said in jest". Livens up the website somewhat.
