This is a good subject, who is the biggest name rider you have passed on a motocross track.
I will start, I once passed Gally when he was standing on the side of the track watching. That's the closest i have ever got to passing someone famous,
what about you?
-
passed jimmy ellis once when he fell off :o
it was early in the race though :'(
i fell off in the vic 500 title
and got lapped by leisky wiliams and moates doh :'(

I passed Troy Bayliss in minibikes ::) and Peter Melton when we were 16 in c grade . I accidently made Leisky crash once in a supercross so i beat him :-[

I diced with Tony Gunter for a few laps at Mt Kembla at what must have been his first open meeting. I didn't know him from Adam at the time. Don't even know what he was riding. I was on the MX250. He was the talk of the meeting and my racing buddies filled me in when I got back to the pits.
I remember he approached and jumped The Wall better than me but I could close up a few bike lengths on him on the hard packed clay left hander after The Wall. Then there was an off camber section which had a, for me anyway ::), difficult dogleg around a tree. He absolutely murdered me through there - probably pulled 4 bike lengths in 8 bike lengths :o. To this day I don't know how he was that much faster than me through there ::).
Kept with him most of the rest of the lap but he edged away. Probably superior fitness :P. He was probably 17, I was about 24.

You had to go and add 'motocross track' didn't you. >:(
I beat Kevin Schwantz once and blew past Mick Shearer like he was standing still...................... oh yeah, he was standing still when his bike broke............... ;D

In PRACTICE at Speedworld in Phoenix, Az. I passed a # 53 Suzuki rider--Brad something ;D ;D. After realizing this, I actually pulled off-thinking that I must have hit warp speed to do that( he was only putting around). He actually wondered if I was okay there on the side of the track.....Brad Lackey-a great bloke..won that day too.
-
I once passed Stephen Gall riding an MT-1 in 1972 at the Kingsgrove Brickpits. Shame it was a race to see who could ride the slowest ::).
-
Passed a Polish /CZ rider once then got re passed and yep my next try I tee boned him :-[, Remember at the following protest steward had a stab at his last name and then just smiled and called him Mr Alphabet because of his surnames huge length............. :o
-
Beaten both Lackey and Pomeroy in vintage races in the US.........when they both DNF'd. Besides that, I've beaten the water truck on more than one occasion.

I don't think I have ever passed anybody, except when I pass them going in the other direction.
Gotta start somewhere.
VMX42
P.S. and Ken dicing with the water truck is truely something to behold!! Just dont try to a block pass, you might come off second best.

SLIGHT VARIATION. I WAS PASSED BY ANT WEST AT NORTH BRIS FLAT TRACK . I HAD A CR500 HE HAD A CR 125 CIRCA 1997

I still get to race Jens Olsen,
can Often beat him to the first Corner,
he then normally passes me about shoulder High mid air on the biggest jump on the track,
I think the only time I passed him is when his bike seized and turned left in front of me
and I passed doing a somersault over the bars,
He is the nicest guy though, was already up and apologizing before I dragged myself of the ground.

Just remembered as a kid on the mighty Gemini 80 often raced and always beat a youngster (who is still a mate today) on his boring modified Dax his name Mike Bigger..... :)
-
...Jens Olsen,
... normally passes me about shoulder High mid air on the biggest jump on the track,
This is off topic, but:
Oh Yeah! :o That same meeting, I saw him over-jump the second of the two small table tops on the back straight. Can't recall which bike it was (I think it was the TS-hybrid), but it was definitely a short travel bike and he landed flat after getting a LOT of air.
I was a few places behind at the time, and I cringed, but he rode off unfazed and was gone within a few corners...
-
I beat the most important person to beat... :D the sweep rider...
-
I passed Gall back in the 80s :o he was riding a pushy from the Gong to Sutho to keep fit. I was a passenger in a car ;D jimson

On dirt track years ago at the old Mount Beauty flat track I passed Robbie Phillis once ... it was a 2 hour flat track event with a Le Mans start an I was on my XR500RC (only a year or so old back then). Phillis was on an RM80!!! (his nephews or something I recall). When the start gun fired he bolted across and basically pushed the RM into life and blasted off. I got my XR going pretty quickly (it always was an easy starter) and took after in the first half of the pack. After the first lap I passed Robbie as he was laying on the track after hitting a rider who was just taking off from the start.
And on the road race circuit I passed Garry McCoy at Eastern Creek when I was campaining my RS125 and he was on a exotic Aprillia 125 that was on loan to him from some European Team .. this was when he was just getting going after the late and great Barry Sheen helped him get a ride. I lined up next to McCoy on the grid and could not believe how fast he got away .. he was fast an the bike was a jet. Anyway around 2 laps later it crapped a plug and I passed him ;D Sweet.
-
Yep, we passed each other a couple of times jim. Either way always a pleasure.
I got passed by five CR's lastweekend at nepean whilst i was pushing my bike back after breaking the cylinder mounts off the front.

My claims to fame
Racing Anthony Gunter's brother here in Darwin (TM125 v BMW450), does that make me fast by association?
On my TM125 at CD7 I chased Dave Tanner for a few laps on his RH250, I didn't pass him but didn't fall too far behind. Truth is I don't think he knew I was there! ;D
At the QLD vintage titles this year I led a 125 championship race for 4 of 5 laps. Unfortunaltely none of those laps were the last one.
Two years ago I beat my mate Muz in a barrel race. It was the first time I'd beaten him in ANY motorcycle event in nearly 40 years
-
Not on a motocross track, but I did beat Kevin Schwantz once.
Unfortunately, it was in an off road race and it was 10 years ago........ ::)
-
I passed Bob Hannah twice at Unadilla, once on the way to the beer tent and once on the way back.
-
Passed Stephen Grant at Woodford . [ He was broken down ] ;D
Passed Troy Spedding at Boonah. [ He had 2 flat tyres but passed me again later.] ;D
-
Passed -Brad Vanberello, stopped on the side on the track waiting for us to catch up ;D
Passed - Geoff Udy on his Pe 400 this weekend on my Pe 250 ::)
-
If I may use "beaten" instead of "passed"---I beat Kirk Hutton at Dargle Thumper Nats some years ago-----at table tennis back at the motel.
-
Ah-haaah ! I beat Gregg Hansford and Warren Willing during the Marlboro Series round at Gracefield, Wellington in 1974.. ;)..but it was on the pool table at the Grove Motel, Lower Hutt... ::)
