Title: 82 RM 125 Z
Post by: GMC on November 13, 2015, 04:52:43 pm
How do you guys go about removing or fitting the exhausts on this model?
The pipe hits on the radiator and the airbox when trying to remove it, a lot of this is because the engine spigot is so deep in the frame.

The stock pipe on this bike is a really tight fit and will only squeeze off if the radiator mounts are loosened but the stock pipe has a non standard header section so I don’t know if this has changed anything.

Trying to jig this model is nearly consuming my career so my question is is it normal to have to undo other parts to remove the exhaust on this model?

Yep GMC I have a D model, which is the same thing.Tank and radiator off (at least bottom radiator mount),usually no need to take airbox out.........then as Arkwright(Ronny Barker) on open all hours (Brit comedy from the 70s) says ....just   jjjjjj.....jiggle it haha. Regards Richo.

Geoff - the 250 is the same - loosen and move out the radiators before putting the mounting point through them.

Is the exhaust identical to the '81 (125X), despite totally different engines (and power characteristics)?

Is there a GMC pipe in the, er, pipeline?

I have a DG pipe on my 125D......I think they are slightly different at the muffler attachment otherwise they fit 125X ,Z and D.

Yeah, I have the DG pipe and alloy silencer on my 125X (teenage Simon would have been jealous- but in reality, any better/as good as stock?).
I've had to use some silicon tube and hose clamps to seal between the two - doesn't seem "right".

Thanks guys, it was starting to do my head in.
This model goes down as the hardest to jig
Previously the winner was the 73 KTM 250 which is a really tight fit but at least with the KTM it is possible to fit the pipe without removing other parts.
There was nothing I could do to get this pipe on in one simple move, kept remaking pieces to change the shape to no avail.
Pipe will now fit if the radiator bolts are removed so the rad can twist within the frame.

'Pipeline' yeah , I like what you did with that ;D

According to part No's the X & Z are the same, is the D the same fitment or is the pipe.muffler join in a different spot?

Looks "trick".
Any idea how the shape/performance compares with the common DG pipe?

Not sure how it compares as I don't know the DG specs and as it's the first and the bike is to be rebuilt I won't know how it performs for sometime.
However I have had good feedback from other Suzi 125 pipes so I suspect my calcs. should work on this one too.

Looks a bit larger in the chamber. Could be an allusion. Looks a lot more "factory".

Hi Geof
The D model pipe and silencer are the same overall dimension when joined together to a X/Z but the section that fits from the silencer to the pipe on a D is different.
So to enable fitment of  a X/Z pipe to a D you will need a X/Z silencer and vice versa.

Frank Pons told me that DG stood for Don't Go on the 81-83 RM125's. Also said that stock was pretty good.
The old CRF pipes were good also.

I can confirm 59's claim. His knowledge of  Suzuki 125's is only surpassed by his knowledge of aphrodisiacs
