The next event on the VERi calendar is the Hopetoun GP on the weekend on June 20 - 21.
This year we are going with a desert race/rally theme. Think early days of the Paris-Dakar, Baja 1000, Finke, Mint 400, etc, etc. We hope to see some bikes with big tanks and other period accessories, as well as the usual vinduro bikes.
Keep checking this thread, the VERi website, and VERi Facebook page for more details. Entry forms should be available soon.
Here are some pics from around the interwebs to get you inspired...

Too bad, as it would be great to see it there. Post up a pic of it here anyway!

The entry for and UVP application form are available on the VERi website, and have been sent via email to VERi members and those on our mailing list. If you want me to send you a copy, send me a PM.

I only have one working bike that is registered Tex, and it fits none of the criteria above. It does however only have about 4 inches of suspension. Can I bring that?

Of course!
Sorry I should make it clear that all of the usual pre 85 vinduro bikes are of course welcome, and will doubtless make up the majority of the field.
We are just trying to see if we can also attract a few different machines with this loose theme.

looking forward to the wall of death in the mallee channel! how good was that!
-
Tex can I give my 89 Kdx 200 a run at Hopetoun it has a big tank and Dakar stickers could fit a map roller to handle bars if needed it is rec registered cheers
-
Sounds like it'll pass muster. Application to allow for rec reg is being processed now. Stay tuned and there ought to be confirmation shortly.

The Baja 1000 is an iconic desert race that many here will have heard of, and hopefully will serve as some inspiration for riders entering the Hopetoun GP Vinduro! 8) I came across some info about bikes that have won the Baja 1000 that some might find interesting. Feel free to add any more details, or make corrections!

VERi has permission to allow rec reg'd bikes to enter the Hopetoun Desert ride so if you want to join the fun get an entry in! There's still time to get your eligible bike rec registered (which will be handy for other future events -such as Harrow in July- and also for general riding) and enjoy a unique ride.
Visit the VERi website (verivinduro.com.au) for access to entry forms, accommodation guide and lots other good stuff!

That's a young GMC, Sea Lake 1980
Still have my trophy from that event too :o
Hopetoun is only a stones throw from Sea Lake (if the stone is thrown from a rocket launcher)
PS VERi wil accept entries on the day if you have a rego'd bike

that explains the change in this countries GDP..... 8)

Hopefully I won't present myself with another one this weekend

Today (Tuesday) is the last opportunity to pre-enter. Contact the Club Secretary (Drakie) on the number listed on the poster if you wish to do so. Or, send me a PM.
You can of course enter at the event.
And why wouldn't you want to? You'll enjoy a fantastic ride, and get one of these:

The Hopetoun momentum is well and truly established! Pre entries have well exceeded last years event and still more are promised. Its gonna be mega!! 8)
-
im on the maybe maybe not list so I will enter otd if I can get away. got to get the big 510 in a bit better shape as well!
-
Based on pre-entries, the approximate percentage of bikes entered at this point in time is...
Yamaha 38%
Kawasaki 23%
Honda 23%
Suzuki 8%
KTM 2%
BMW 2%
Husqvarna 2%
Can-Am 2%
Tex
-
2% Can-Am? That is a bloody good effort.
-
Hi Tex
Is the setup for this years event similar to last?
Will there be a fuel drop (car and trailor) at a fill up point (Dattuck dune area) so fuel range can be around the 80km`s mark?

Same set up (unless something unforeseen happens of course).

The good thing about statistics is you can make them look like anything you want ;D
50 entries means one bike is 2%
Anything less than 2 % would be one of Canam370's bikes ;D

whipped the laidback bar mounts on the 510 off and threw on a set of uprights, should prevent a bad case of overbarightis I hope. oil change and pump up the tyres and she is ready to go. Hopetoun here we come
-
Yep will be good to see it out there ads to the percentage of four stroke farm bikes out there ???????? make sure that oil cooler has a fan on it and a big ??Tank ???? see you there cheers
-
Just a quick question concerning the Saturday practice to those that went last year - it says on the entry that we will need to trailer our bikes out to the Dattuck dune area for the session. Can I just confirm that the dune area is accessible by 2wd car and trailer?
-
I wasn't there last year so I'm not 100% certain but I think you can get there okay in 2WD
I hope so anyway as i will be in the same boat ;D
All loaded up now for an early start, see you all up there
-
spoke to a mate from up that way and he said it will still be slick in the clay bits :o but the sand should be nice.... woo hoo bikes almost ready (quick test tomorrow am then load up and depart. looking forward to it, charging the go pro as we type
-
Yes you can drive into the Dattuck dune refueling area with a 2wd without a problem
-
Thanks for the confirmation - I'm looking forward to getting there this arvo :)

coolish start to the day soon changed when we hit the sand and it warmed up real quick!
-
forgot to add a huuuugggee thanx to the team organising the day, was a great course again, made even better with some extra sand sections. the mild disappointment when farmer brown filled in the wall of death >:( was sorted by the sensational hard c*ck hill section...luved it! ;)
-
My first Hopetoun GP, and I've got to say, that was an absolute hoot ;D
A great mix of loose sand and firmer trails to keep us on our toes. I'm stoked to have managed to get 3 laps under my belt, although my body is feeling a bit worse for wear today.
Well done to the VERI team on organising such a well run event - I can only imagine the amount of effort required to get the whole thing coming together as smoothly as it did.
-
Thanks to everyone who made this event such a success!

I'm surprised there hasn't been more feedback on this event - Considering that at least 60 people got to enjoy the efforts of the organisers, I am surprised that it seems to have happened without more than a murmur.
From my perspective as a competitor, this was run almost perfectly. IT was FUN!
I would have liked the track to be open till 3:30 as originally advertised, but I was feeling a bit stuffed after 3 laps, so doing 4 would have made it hard to drive home.
I think this was a brilliantly run event, and will happy come back next year to play in the sand again.
-
Thanks for the positive feedback Flipper - I'm sure the VERi and volunteers do appreciate it! Come along to Harrow in July to partake of more merriment and great riding.
-
I certainly appreciate the effort of the organisers and volunteers, however I am still walking funny and possibly a little mentally scarred from tank slapping a 38 year old bike through 60 odd kilometres of sand.
Obviously without any gumption to be able to open the throttle and lean back on the pegs. Also following two mates, one who broke a clutch cable and the other who broke the rear brake mount off the frame.
The camping was great, the venue was great, we need to get GMC a big hat, the food was good.
A memorable weekend all up, but bugger me, I hate sand. Due to not being able to ride it effectively.
-
its the weirdest stuff sand, promises so much when you set eyes upon it and it promptly dumps you on your arse when you set wheels upon it. :o took me 1/2 a lap of weave wobble to get into the swing and let the bike go. the husky was very unhappy below 3rd gear. the engine mass was like having the front brake on and it wobbled and wallowed like the Costa Concordia till you hit 3rd then it sat up and behaved itself. I fluffed the hill at the fuel dump and I also stalled at the very crest of hard c*ck hill when 2 kph ground speed and a rear wheel speed of 60Kph finally clashed! thank Christ it started on the second kick!
I poked the fork tubes down in the clamps and the rear end was very plush which was fab in the sand straights but "Wal's Weave saw a lot of straight lining going on.
feeling pretty happy with my self and the monster, I was then passed by a bloke standing upright on a kdx 250 like I was standing still!
good fun!
very impressed with the extra section at the start, a real sand workout.
here is some more footage of some of the easier bits!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ9c0fJ4y8U
-
I had a crack at the entry hill in second on the IT400 and muffed the line, spearing off to the left side. My mate was at the top of the hill and reckoned it was hilarious.
Cleared about 4-5 metres of scrub from the side of the hill though, so that was nice.
-
What a great weekend ride with a variety of different sections. The course had a mix of slow heavy sand to fast top gear harded packed tracks, somethng for everyone really. I think we all had a 'this might hurt moment' throughout the day but luckily no real injuries were to occur. All volunteers, riders and crew were friendly and respectful of each other and the area and I`m sure there will be quite a few returns next year.
A huge thankyou to all the people who volunteered to organise and run the event, to the local land owners who gave permission to use this spectacular part of the State, to all the riders and crew that turned up and especially the Township of Hopetoun for hosting the event.
Again, well done guys I will definitely be back again next year.
