Title: 2015 Harrow Vinduro, July 25-26.
Post by: Canam370 on May 06, 2015, 07:32:24 pm
Well, only 2 vinduro's in Vic (Beaufort 9/10 May and Hopetoun 20/21 June) as 'warm-ups' before the Harrow classic in July! Best do these two as riding conditioning 'coz you'll need your wits about you if you want to survive the bogs, rivers, greasy logs, fuel bowl emptying open runs and navigation tribulations!

The Europeans took the guernsey last year as, not unexpectedly, the pre-eminent enduro machinery. The riders peeled off an outstanding number of cumulative laps, soundly smashing the Oriental machines riders paltry efforts.

It seems that this year the riders of the Asian leaf blowers have underhandedly lobbied some members of the VERi committee to try and turn back the clock on last years result by having the Harrow course RUN IN THE REVERSE DIRECTION this year! I suspect that Mr GMC has had something to do with this as it seems he has abandoned his Factory Ride BMW175 to putter about on some not quite ripe green thingy and it appears he is looking for any 'advantage' (perceived or otherwise). Not to worry, he patently has cognitive issues if he can't recognise having been on a good thing with the mighty Bimmer.

Stay tuned.

I think that was a typo, it should have read "mighty Bummer"

Sounds like good advice, what jets do you recommend?

Well, if you can't take the advice re; tuning, then perhaps coming back to the Bimmer will get you mobile again! Never mind skiting about how many carbies you have - just concentrate on fixing the sad one you need to get the green thingy going. Are you starting to appreciate just how good you had it with your sponsored Factory European Ride? Did you think that the colour of the green thingy matched the greener grass over the fence?  ::)

Can't believe you would want to desert the all conquering euro team for the for the losing rice burners.

Yes life was good on team DMC but you failed to supply me a cheque for my living expenses.
I still don't think that 8 Big Macs a day & 3 slabs of Jim Beam a weekend was excessive!

Can't believe you would want to desert the all conquering euro team for the for the losing rice burners.

Well last year it was a Hodaka that deserted the Jap team to become a Euro so there is lots of team jumping going on.
This year we will be checking compliance plates for country of origin, the Euro's will have to win it on the track instead of off it this time.

Well, if you can't take the advice re; tuning, then perhaps coming back to the Bimmer will get you mobile again!

Thanks for the kind offer but all is good, the KDX lives.
Couldn't get the float level right last night, it was either flooding or no fuel coming through at all, in the end I went through the procedure that usually fixes most things...

And for all of the riders of Oriental leaf blowers just a reminder of the European Cherman Wundermachine which denied your securing of the premier at last years Harrow........

The vibrant Teutonic Terror may be absent from this years festivities but no matter (the whiney Orientophile enjoying the sponsored ride last year has been ditched) - winners are grinners! Class will always shine. Don't forget to organise the sampan (maybe a Junk would be more appropriate!) ferry for the puddle crossings - I recall many drowned beigecycles in the river which probably accounts for part of the Orientals dismal performance.

What an outrage! In fact, I'm outraged! Not happy with cheating their way to victory in 2014, the riders of "other" (i.e. weird) brands within the committee have obviously come up with this reverse direction scheme to once again steal the trophy.

Clearly used to malfunctioning machinery that runs in all manner of ways aside from the conventionally accepted one, they have hobbled us decent people with this bizarre condition.

I thought something was up when I noticed at Beaufort that Drakie has the rear tyre of his GasGas on backwards!

Here's one of these non-Japanese scoundrels practicing:

Well, it won't matter, our factory rider GMC has seen the error of his ways and will be proudly riding (backwards) for the rising sun at the 2015 Harrow 100.

What is it with these ‘other’ brands that they can only use letters for their brand name.
It’s like they can’t spell or something, like how pathetic is it that a business has to resort to 3 letters as some sort of weird product branding. :o
KTM
ATK
DKW
BSA
SWM
BMW
AJS
CCM
JAP yes they had to name a pommy bike JAP to make it sound fast
VOR
DOT

Then there are the simpletons that found 3 letters too hard so they came up with
MZ
TM
CZ

Least the Japs have pronounceable names and only resort to letters for their models
Long may the Orientals reign supreme (Mmmm supreme, must go order myself a pizza)

I believe that piece of Engineering mastery (the motor cycle) , "this wonderful trojen", " this wolf in a gerbils clothing" has been donated and is proudly displayed in the Museum of Modern art.

The Trojen is cocooned in a hermetically sealed chamber (coincidentally donated by Tex - strange but true, ask him. He obviously appreciates the historical significance of this machine despite his misleading words) ready to be returned to the fray at a moments notice!

Coincidentally , whilst wondering around the Classic Dirt 11 pit area a few week-ends ago I came across the Welsh team preparing for this years Harrow in fine form.

Fine form meaning , all 4 bikes were non operational or maybe just running , but not running anywhere real soon.

With the help of all and I mean all 4 people in his pit area the whole day was spent getting these four jiggers running. I'm very happy to say that on Sunday all the four bikes were running to some extent.

So the scene is set for the Welsh boy at this years Harrow , can he finally finish a Harrow on one of his own bikes. Stay tuned it only 50 ODD days until we find out.

As mentioned in an earlier post the Harrow course will be run in the reverse direction to last years. The organisers have done this to try even the field for the Asian machinery entrants. If the event is started from the end and heading back towards the start then the reliability of the Accidentals ( ;D) will be improved given that they seem to start off well but fail later. See, whatever to help out!!

Outstanding! Looks like its still running too! The rider smiles because his bike is resting on a river base composed of drowned Jappers and that he will be able to ride his fine Euro steed onwards whenever he wants to!

VERi (vintage enduro riders incorporated) are pleased to announce the running of the 8th annual Harrow 100 which will be taking place on the weekend of July 25th and 26th of this year. VERi organizers are happy to welcome Yamaha Australia to the event and Yamaha will be making available the latest demo motorcycles and quads for test rides.

A number of sponsors from previous years events are also returning .

This year will also include a vintage tractor display with machines and weather permitting maybe a tractor pull contest.

As we get closer to the event we will advise where the Yamaha test riding will be held , but having said that it will be close to the park ferme and “no” you will not be able to ride the Harrow 100 course on the test bikes or in the test buggy.

The Harrow 100 is open to all registered pre 85 enduro and trail bikes. UVP unregistered vehicle permits will be available and rec rego for suitable bike is acceptable for this event. VERi  as usual is aiming to recreate what it was like to ride in an enduro in the 70’s and 80's and it must be stressed that this is not a competition or race but an organized trail ride where you will get to see some of the most spectacular country side the Grampians has to offer.

The course is approximately 100 Km’s  long with participants, some well into their seventies, usually completing one lap on Saturday and 2 laps on Sunday. This event would not be possible without the fantastic community support VERi receives every year from the local Harrow Farmers and residents. “Yes Yes yes I hear the cry’s “Shoey said that last year” ,  but it’s very close to 100km’s and includes some new surprises and cool trail sections.

There will be a fuel stop / dump at the half way point

Bikes will be sealed in Parc Ferme over night, riders then have to cold start their mounts within a minute on Sunday morning and as usual there be  a lot of nervous faces and frantic kicking.

This year’s theme is Japanese Vs The rest of the world ie Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki Versus Husqvarna, SWM, KTM, BMW etc. Last years event was won by the Euro’s,  but the Japanese riders disputed the result when one of the euro bikes country of origin was questioned!

If you would like to find out more about this event or even come and join the fun check out verivinduro.com.au or contact Steve Baker, Mobile 0412 287 524 or Shoey , Mobile 0409 810 551

Entry form will be available soon

Got a spiffy looking vinduro bike that you'd like to show off? You can bring it along and put it on display. It doesn't have to be one that you'll be riding around the course either (because they won't be very shiny after riding on Saturday). VERi will award a prize or two based on criteria that we'll announce closer to the event.

On a positive note I can watch my daughter graduate from UNI (well her first course anyway), but It would have been nice to apply a coating of Harrow's finest earth to those pesky Whale Eating / Rice Burners.......Next Year....

There are some "model continuation" exceptions to the '85 rule.

To quote the VERi web site on eligibility -
The following models were manufactured post 84 however they are identical to their earlier brothers with the exception of BNG (Bold New Graphics) so are welcome at VERi events. (flow on models)
Yamaha
1985 IT 200
1985 IT 250
1985 IT 490
1985 TT 600 (excluding Belgarda)
DT 175 - all drum brake models

The mailout for Harrow entries happened at 10:44 last night. My entry and payment submitted 06:45 this morning. I hope Vinduro Penrite Team will be in the first 20 bikes away!

I haven't seen a 'mail-out' as yet.  Did I miss something?

Last year with checking the bikes even the one's with full rego , will that happen again with full regoed bikes ?

All bikes will be scrutineered. This will mostly be to check for overall safety issues; such as broken off levers, throttles that don't return, stuffed wheel bearings, etc. If a bike is plainly unroadworthy it will be pulled up. All riders are expected to have their bikes in a roadworthy condition that is compliant with the conditions of their registration/permit. This responsibility falls squarely with the rider.

Likewise, all riders are subject to the applicable Victorian road rules when travelling on public roads.

Your DT should be fine as per VERi guidelines, CanAm370 can confirm, so send him a PM.

I have a non Japanese bike (I'm too ashamed to say what it is), and I am worried about taking this fragile hand grenade to Harrow. Do you think I should bring it?

No. Leave it at home.  ;)

Before we collected and opened todays mail , we have 75 confirmed entries for the 2015 Harrow 100.

Entries are steadily rolling in and the event is building. (two weeks to go)  If you require UVP's watch out , the cut of date is the 15th of July.

I think % 75 of the entries received to date are European bikes.   ::)

On another note please do not  wear your mankini this year for the river crossings Veri is still recieving bills for all the sheep  that had to recieve counciling

Get that rear tail light working there Dennis , you will need that for the UVP and so the Husky riders can see you when they fly past.

Hey Ekka

I forgot about the locating beacon required for the KTM  , I think the model designation for that is The River Skipper , which is in keeping with the earlier model The Jack Pinner  :o , go figure on those names.

At this stage we are , one on Saturday and three on Sunday. This is subject to change depending on course conditions etc etc . This will be confirmed at Riders briefing on Saturday morning.

Stay tuned for final instructions

Following collection of todays mail

121 riders have registered and entered to date.  Of the 121 entered riders approx. %75 of those riders have indicated that they are riding or wish they could ride a European machine.

The widdle fellas a prone to be startled by loud noises , a little pressure , a bit of distance , a cold start , a bit of water , a steep metal bridge , dark places , wet weather , Honda reliability ("for you Marko" big buddy) and generally anything green or yellow. So if you see some be very quite and don't make eye contact.

* Get someone to help push it.

How do you get a Euro bike to go faster?

* Get 2 people to push it

How do you get a Euro bike to go ludicrous speed?

Answers to some of the more frequent questions:

What's the deal with camping?
No need to book, just pay when you get there. Plenty of spots available. Basic showers & toilets on site.

Can we have a campfire?
Yes. Might pay to bring your own wood though.

Can I renew my VERi membership/take out a membership at Harrow?
Yes.

How long is the loop?
Around 90 kms apparently. There'll be a fuel dump approx half way around.

When's the next event after Harrow?
Blackwood, August 29-30.

I look forward to seeing all the pictures of Japanese bikes broken down, stuck in dog holes and generally being trounced by the far superior euro bikes, which will once again rain supreme.

The Vinduro Penrite Team have completed preparations. We'll pack the trailer tomorrow and head down to Wodonga as the first step in the 2000+km round trip.
This trip makes Sarah and my 3rd Harrow, and Mark is continuing his unbroken run since its inception.
We hope to get to our accommodation just outside Harrow late on Friday arvo.

See you there!

Doesnt look good, but pistons are cheap at yambits.

In my enthusiasm to not pack the car friday night, I missed a few things...

Had the car loaded yesterday morning, went to put the bike on and noticed I forgot to put the bash plate on after I replaced the clutch. Put that on and upon getting up off the floor, I lent on the pipe which went clunk.

It shouldn't go clunk. Whole bloody thing was loose. Pulled it off and found holes in it in the welding that happened at hopetoun. So a day of fun and excitement with the MIG and high temp paint to hide the welding...

Prolly would have near frozen to death at Harrow anyway. :)

I've seen a DT400 piston like that repaired by puddle welding/casting to get a traveller going again.

A bloke named Whirly Wilson, who was a  famous fix anything engineer in Ararat, did it for the local Yamaha agent when I worked there as a kid.

Pretty sure that the Hodaka was on display only. I daresay most people who took part are too exhausted to write anything right now, or are still travelling. I am a superman, but even so am pretty shattered after 2 x 110 km loops, but I'll try and give a quick overview...

Mate, you missed an awesome event. It was tough, no question, but everyone who completed a lap had a look on their face that was a mix of elation, satisfaction, pride and f**k-I'm-tired!

The ride was epic, and the stories even more so. People had all kinds of adventures, trials, failures, successes, crashes, near misses, break downs, trackside repairs, hilarity and disappointment. This was a real experience. I'll say it again - "epic".

How Stephen and Rob and their helpers managed to come up with this extraordinary course is beyond me, but I'm sure I speak for everyone there when I say that we're glad they did.

Just briefly on my own experience; after a very convivial Friday night (campfire-pub-campfire) I did one lap on Saturday. I had a relatively trouble free run, only getting the XT250 briefly bogged once (thanks for the push Rosco), and got back tired and cold but stoked that I'd completed the course. I had a quieter eve on Saturday night, and in the morn one of my team mates arrived on Sunday morn (the other was a DNS) and we both did a lap today. My back brakes had given up the ghost the previous day, and when we both got flat front tyres early on, so it was an interesting day but we made it through.

Epic.

The results are being collated, the numbers crunched, tea leaves mixed with chicken intestines being stirred so the decision can be determined as fairly and accurately as possible. Also, the committee is happy to announce an extension to the cut-off for postal 'donations' from the various factions - in the interest of fairness of course. 8)

I would like to give a big call out to the guys who turned up mid week at Harrow , to Help the Veri Harrow organising team get this event together.

Dennis from the NSW VTR club , Billy Campbell , Colin and Jezza. These guys worked like " Trojans" to help us get this over the line.

A big personal thanks to Steve Baker for his planning , dedication and drive , "contrary to popular belief he is almost fun to be around". I must say I was impressed by the guy on the TS185 with old trials tyres who completed the course. Kudos also to my mate's brother who flew down to ride a bike he'd never seen before (CT185) after not riding a dirtbike for 20+ years. He reckons he'll be back next year, and will get his own bike!

There were a few first timers there - quite an introduction to vinduros!

even though I only got about 18ks, I thought it was awesome, first time I have been trail riding (or practically any riding, except a few laps in my ~ 1 acre paddock) for almost 30 years, I was having a ball, and surprisingly stayed on the bike, some bits were very tricky, but am keen to do more events when I get the bike back together and richened up...a lot

Well, stick another slug in it or put a bolt in the old one with some silicone (high temp stuff) and go to Blackwood.

Was good fun last year except for me nearly losing my mates bike in a rut that was nearly as deep as an '80 XT250.

Actually thinking about it, the DT175 are pretty forgiving, do you have an air leak somewhere? Have you pressure and vacuum tested the bottom end?

just found the cause of the melted piston, I filled the crank case with petrol Sunday, went to remove the engine from the frame tonight, which necessitates removing the ignition side cover to get one engine mount bolt out, when I loosened the screws, about a cup full of petrol came out...leaking crankshaft seal, who would have thought one could fail after only 25 years, and barely ridden  ::)

Vinduro Penrite Team have edited some footage from Day-1, Saturday. You might see yourself in an awkward situation, or you just might see ME in an awkward situation. Yes, there are blatant plugs for our team sponsor, but you have to admit, the fun is in reliving those gnarly sections!
The footage and editing is not "broadcast quality", but it ain't me day job!

Enjoy!

There was a "W" board before it. It is visible on the fence post on the left. I just got too focused on getting some air and completely forgot to respect the course markings!

I read the other Day the results  in the   Moscow  Times.

They were done By the Morego Lessgallope statistics company .

Yes there was more Japanese bike entered at harrow than Euro Bikes .

But More % of  Euro Bike Made it Home than the Japanese Bikes ..

So Euro Bike Won Again   .. ;D

Sorry to disappoint you folks, but after careful consideration, the VERi committee is pleased to announce (well some of us are) that the victors in 2015 are in fact the riders of the rising sun. Yes, Japanese bikes have taken the prize this year.

Was it the lack of re-badged Kawasakis on the RoW side, or the sheer weight of the 1000 or so Honda XRs entered on the Japanese side? Actually, it was many factors and no doubt there'll be a mix of smug satisfaction and outrage across all those who attended this awesome event. In any case the series is now at a 1-1 tie...

VERi almost had to have a new new committee elected over this issue. After an extraordinary meeting where careful and considered discussions were robustly entertained, engaging such debating tactics as headlocks, name calling and chinese burns, the Euro supporters finally declaring that they didn't care that the Orientals were still smarting (is that an oxymoron in this case?) from their defeat last year but they were above it all anyway, so to stop all the high pitched whining stated VERi should 'just give it to the Asians this year as a GIFT!' An accurate tally was impossible due to the Asian manufactured playing cards used to keep lap scores failing miserably to survive the conditions - well, who'd have seen that coming? Thanks for picking up the cards for us Tex. Next year a more responsible and less conniving committee member will be sourcing near indestructible scoring tags which will eliminate this scurrelous loophole.

The Euro Vs Japs was a close call this year, most of the Japs decided to take a sabbatical and left the challenge up to a gaggle of XR 200’s of which the Euro’s were still no match.

After an extraordinary meeting where careful and considered discussions were robustly entertained engaging such debating tactics as.......  chinese burns,

Were the Euro burns ineffective?

Next year a more responsible and less conniving committee member will be sourcing near indestructible scoring tags which will eliminate this scurrelous loophole.

I didn't realize you had given the job to some one else!

Hmmm, that's not quite how I remember it. The usual Euro-dodginess began with the RoW camp attempting to get Sepp Blatter onto the VERi committee. This failed like a Husky at a cold start test, and when they realised they couldn't slap any BMW stickers onto Kawasakis after the event they eventually had to hear the music of dozens of contented XRs thumping away and concede defeat.

No worries, but I think I became confused as I was supposed to be assisting with a poker run at the same time. The other club weren't impressed when had to try and make a full house out of enduro checkpoint cards.

Look on the bright side - you can use them as muffler packing for the SWM. They'll last way longer than the rest of the bike...
