Title: 2015 Beaufort Vinduro, May 9 - 10
Post by: Tex on April 10, 2015, 12:18:17 am
It's on again, the "tour of the Pyrenees"!

The first Beaufort Vinduro last year was a hit with everyone who attended. We'll be sticking to a similar format this year, with a practice track available on Saturday, and the main event on Sunday.  There was a great atmosphere on the Saturday night at the pub too, which I'm sure will be the same again!

Bikes need to be registered (full, CPS, rec rego or UVP), and riders licensed.

Entry forms available very soon.

That's a very specific request! Hopefully we'll get a bit (but not too much) before the event...

The course will be similar to last year, consisting of three sections of approximately 30 kms each. Section 4 will be slightly different as additional interesting trails have been included. Once again there will be two separate fuel dumps. At any time you’re only a short ride from the course back to the starting area at Raglan Reserve. Sweep riders will be on hand to keep an eye on things.

Finish the whole course and earn yourself a groovy medal!

There’ll be a practice track available on Saturday. Breakfast will be available at Raglan Reserve until 10am. Get there early for riders’ briefing as first bikes are away at 9am.

Camping available at Raglan Reserve, and plenty of other accommodation available around town. Saturday night at the pub was a good laugh in 2014, so sure to be again.

More details available on VERi website.

Same here, call me a tightarse but I hate having to pay to have water delivered

I hear on the grapevine that we now have the Rec Reg. permit in place for Beaufort.
That means you can ride a bike with Rec. Reg. and not have to worry about the normal Rec. Reg. restrictions as to where you can ride during the event.

Thats confirmed Geoff. VERi is offering the opportunity to ride areas not generally accessible to the public so if you want to enjoy a ride with plenty of variety and the value of a proper full day out riding then Beaufort is a must!

"Conditions are perfect," reported Drakie this morning. He's been out with some VERi club members checking out the tracks this week. We just need some more rain in the next few days to keep it at the optimum condition, which I think will happen.

It might sound obvious, but it got a bit cool riding around in drizzly conditions, so chuck in a spare pair of gloves and a waterproof jacket for the weekend.

For anybody making the late dash for a Sunday entry, VERi will have EFTPOS available (well, dependent on phone service!). It'd be very handy if completed entry forms could be presented to the hard working and notoriously short tempered staff at the sign in - you have been warned! Its also not a good look having entrants brawling over a single working pen..........

Post by: Canam370 on May 08, 2015, 09:37:29 pm
I know most of you who are planning to attend the Beaufort Vinduro are hoping for challenging conditions i.e; wet, muddy, slippery - a real test of man and machine! Unfortunately conditions are disappointingly mundane with no dust, great traction and top trails. Sorry. But it might still be prudent to pack in some shower pants in case the weather becomes more interesting.

The course will cover approximately 120klms with four sections, the longest being the first at about 40k's. There will be fuel dumps at the ends of sections one and three, so make sure you have two fuel containers if you'll need to refuel.

We have also been assured by the arrowers that they have performed their duties in an exemplary fashion. Their names will be available on the day to those who think that the section setters have been a little generous with the descriptions of their own prowess!

This one is shaping up nicely so if you are thinking that you might like to ride - then do it!!!!

Post by: Tex on May 08, 2015, 10:45:28 pm
Yep, I can confirm that conditions are currently primo!

It's a long course, with plenty of smooth flowing trails, but you will need to keep your wits about you as there are some slimy rocks, protruding tree roots, and 4WD wheel ruts that can catch out the unwary.

Section 1 also contains some "interesting" downhill bits but I was able to tackle everything on a twin shock DT125.

VERi will of course accept entries tomorrow, and on Sunday morning, so if you haven't entered yet but are keen, then by all means head over to Beaufort for this unique event.

I was too busy attaching arrows to trees to take many photos, but here's a taste of what can be expected...

Punters have been rolling in all day, and we are expecting more to arrive tomorrow, so it should be a good turn-out overall.

The practice track has been put to good use, although one rider had a spectacular crash which shook him up a bit and bent his bike somewhat  :-\.

As the light faded, and campfires started appearing at the Raglan Reserve the usual bench racing sessions got underway, with many people making sure they got plenty of fluids into themselves ahead of tomorrow's long ride. The boys from Sth Aust in particular were onto it early, and their dedication to the fluid intake regime is to be commended.

Overnight downpour changed the nature of the track somewhat, but certainly didn't dampen riders' enthusiasm! Entry numbers received a late boost, with several people arriving this morning to sign on. The end result was a healthy field of riders, on the usual variety of bikes.

First rider back was Phil who was #36, so he must've been flying!

Everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed the course, even those who didn't complete the whole thing for one reason or another.

On behalf of VERi, thanks to everyone who turned up and made this event another success. Thanks also to all the volunteers who made this complex event work, club members and otherwise.

The locals seem to be really enthusiastic about the event too, so it should only get bigger and better with time.

The day improved markedly with the conditions alternating between squalls and sunshine. The course held up well and EVERY rider through the checkpoints grinning (wetly) and having some sort of a tale to tell. Unlike SOME off-road disciplines ( ::)) no-one refused to ride or was grizzling about the conditions, and were all looking forward to enjoying the challenges ahead with everyone pitching in to help each other on the trail. no-one refused to ride or was grizzling about the conditions, and were all looking forward to enjoying the challenges ahead

Well I feel guilty now because I did grumble a bit about the cold but the tracks themselves were just friggin awesome.

Yes there were a couple of greasy hills not far from the start that seemed to have a few spectators but that was about the worst of it as far as hills go. There was a steep downhill sometime later that had me praying for my front brake cable to hang in there as I was squeezing it so hard.

The rain then set in but the pines did a good job of protecting us from some of it, you noticed the rain when we broke out onto a fire road every now and then as the rain would sting your face. I had a bit of a sore neck at the end of the day as I was riding with my head down so much trying to use the helmet peak to protect me from the elements.

With Drakie dribbling on about distances to the fuel dumps during riders briefing I was starting to think I should have bought a second fuel drum for the second fuel stop but when I refueled at the first fuel check it only took 3-4 litres. I checked it at the finish and I still had nearly half a tank. Either my KDX 250 is really fuel efficient or I was just running on the pilot jet all day!

After the pines section and the first fuel dump the tracks opened up a bit but by that time I was soaked through and I was starting to suffer from ‘Coolgardie Syndrome’ The faster speeds and the cold wind went right through my soaked clothes to turn my body into a fridge. I nursed myself through for a finish but there were a couple of times I overshot some corners because my cold fingers refused to act quickly to grab the brake. The fact that no one caught up to me suggests to me that everyone else had dropped the pace too.

This event reminded me so much of an 80’s Enduro it was like stepping back in time.

I had to bail out of Sat. as I had to go to a funeral, in Stratford of all places (4 hrs in the opposite direction)  so thanks to all who helped to make this event happen, especially  Rach. on the ‘desk’

It was my first outing on my new 250 (yes it runs at last) and it was a good event to run a bike in as overheating was never going to be an issue. Just have to fiddle with some tuning and set up issues now and then ponder gearing for Hopetoun.

come on Tex More photos Please ...

Don't think there will be a lot of photo's as it wasn't a good day to have a camera out, I had mine with me but I didn't dare take it out of the car.

Nope, the other sweeps were fit enough to help push anyone stuck. And do something about your stutter.......

no-one refused to ride or was grizzling about the conditions, and were all looking forward to enjoying the challenges ahead with everyone pitching in to help each other on the trail. Good on you all!!

Drakie made the point (several times), how everyone just "stepped up" and got into the challenge.

This event reminded me so much of an 80’s Enduro it was like stepping back in time.

Yeah, he said that a lot too!

Amazing what a sprinkling of universal solvent will do to a track! And how much of a blast would it have been if the weather had held off a little?
Phil was lucky/unlucky with the stick which popped off his radiator cap - could have got his leg or the radiator itself!!

Here is a pic from the Special Test Track on Saturday.

Thanks for the pic mboddy - trying to get some air time on the IT175J ! Very much appreciate you sharing the pic!

Such an enjoyable event even if I did spend some quality time side of track pondering my failed head gasket & attempting a rebuild in the rain :)

Thanks to everyone at VERi who put on such a great, well organised event look forward to seeing all your smiling faces at the next event (probably Harrow for me)

 - Cheers Jon.

Also massive thanks to Canam370 (Paul) for coming to collect me, getting into his heated ute was very welcomed even if I was a certain shade of orange :) being covered head to toe in orange clay after attempting a tow up a greasy hill

I would have been cursing, big time. There is no way my current fitness would have got me through this one.

Had it been dry it looks like it would have been awesome ( not saying playing in the mud isn't lol ).

Watching Phil's Video, I was short of breath ;) watching those knobbies turn to slicks reminded me of 3 bridges in the wet.

Lil Ms Pentrite is an inspiration to the spirit of Vinduro.

That can't be the same day at the top of the hill , when I got to to the spot where the klx is parked it was covered in cloud , raining and I couldn't even see the perimeter trees , perfect conditions for riding.

They'll be available for collection at Hopetoun this weekend. Anyone who won't be there can get them at a subsequent event, or we can organise some other way.

A post out won't be a problem. Left-overs after Beaufort to be mailed unless otherwise specified. They look good too!!!
