Do these three have abnormally long suspension or is that typical HL?
It's a serious question; I'm not too familiar with these bikes.
They look a tad ungainly - much like a woman in high heels who can't really walk in high heels.
If you know what I mean...
-
YEAH THERE FAIRLY HIGH I COULDNT REACH THE GROUND ON THE ONE I USE TO OWN FUNNY PROBABLY THE SAME IF NOT A BIT TALLER THAN A MEGA 2 MAICO THIS IS NT A NORTON VILLIERS THIS IS A HALLMAN PROFAB

The bike in the first pic looks particularly goofy - I'm guessing its due to the thick red stripe on the original side plate, extra rear number-plates and overly-long rear guard. The bike in the last pic is the most original, and it (to my eyes) easily the best looking of the four shown (even though red handgrips make baby Jesus cry).
-
Yeah, I like the fourth photo as well. It looks in proportion - long legs, but in proportion.
-
The fourth photo has my vote too. The first one looks gawdy IMHO

It could be the way the picture was taken but some how I dont think so. The swingarm looks to be on more of an angle and the rear guard makes the back wheel look like a 17". I think the rear shocks could be a little to long for my likings which make the whole bike look out of shape, but then I dont own it, but if I did I would think its cool.

Bike from UK looks to have the best proportion of them all. Bike with red hand grips and guard dog keeping watch looks good too. That first bike with number 1 on sideplate ::)
Come on DJ, if you owned it I bet it would be corrected quick smart and look great. ;D
-
To be honest Quicky, I dont think I would even be able to reach the footpegs so reaching the ground on that bike is just out of the question, so just so I could ride it I would have to lower the thing to get on it or put a carrier on the back so I could have a stepladder with me at all times.
-
Here's my friend Bens 2 HLs in the UK. One is a GMC replica, the other a genuine NV bike. I can't remember which is which. That Florida HL (#1) with the Fournales shocks is bloody ridiculous. These bikes were built in 77-78 and were never mean't to have that sort of suspension travel. That bike'd be a pig to ride. The yellow UK Pro Fab bike is more like it should be.

I spotted this sweet TT500 with some tasteful and sensible mods at CD5. With taste, lateral thinking and a bit of nouse, the stock framed bikes can be made to look and work well.

The ones in firko's first post look right. The earlier ones reminded me of one of these, but not as well put together

The goofy numberplates by the back mudgaurd are origional, they were the first thing to fall of the HL thats why so few survive. shock lenth should be .395mm The bike i am selling is 99% origional and unrestored and started 4th kick today after sitting in my loft for the last 10ish yrs. Its not a beauty queen but its as you want to find them unmolested.
-
What dave hasnt mentioned is the bike is actually in the UK, i think.
-
i wouldnt mind a look in that loft ;)

On the subject of overly long legs, this bike was featured in an article by Super Hunky.
I forget where I found the article but some of you may be familiar with it.
Fourth photo is for comparative purposes only - Stacy Keibler has looong travel too. ;)

Below is Gary Benns ex factory works NV HL with the great Craig Dack standing behind it with CDR/Nokia Yamaha factory rider Matty Moss and his works 450. Photographed at Broadford for the HL v YZ450f shootout I did for ADB prior to CD4

great shots firko, I never saw the article. What was the verdict?
-
The YZ450F destroyed the HL in every department except for cool factor. The 4 stroke has come a loooong way since the HL and even though the HL had some serious engine work and featured trick stuff like OW forks and very trick Ohlins and is owned by one of racings most famous tuners, it was unfortunately way off the YZf's pace.
-
I'd hoped for a different answer but expected that one.
MXA recently did a comparison between a 92? Cr500 and a new CR450f and the gist of it was that once the test riders got used to the CR500 they were turning some good laps. Most of them seemed to want the 500 engine in the 4 stroke frame. I suppose though that the difference between those two bikes and the HL v YZ test was a bit less extreme.
-
Wonder which one would last the best engine wise before overhaul?
One of my bizarre passions was to build a HL type machine with an XS650 lump for go ;) Still maybe someone has done already it.
-
I would say the TT500 engine would last way longer.. Less revs and less moving parts(single cam, etc.)

A bit like this one? I've seen it at Nudgee a few times - it's pretty quick!
-
Bloody hell I knew that would be so............... :D ;) Cheers Tim
-
Sounds good too.
-
Last one I have Tim - whoops sorry, back to the HL...
