Title: YZ175D.
Post by: Nathan S on July 13, 2008, 11:19:10 pm
The bike was bought as a rusty roller from billjackjane about a year ago, with the specific intention of turning into a "YZ175" - I love my YZ125D, and figured that this would be a way to build a 250-class bike that handled about the same, while having a bit more grunt against the 250s.

Cases are DT125D, and the top end is IT175D, ignition is DT175, while the rest of the engine/gearbox is YZ125D.
I used the external rotor DT ignition simply because I had it... I'm on the look-out for an internal rotor ignition from a YZ125X~E.

Forks and triple clamps are YZ250D, while the shock is a modified YZ125D item (more length, but with the travel restricted back to 9"). I think it needs a stiffer rear spring for my fat arse, but it might just need additional pre-load (remember that extra length).

It's borrowing the pipe from my 125D, until I repair the E pipe I've got for it. Longer term, Uncle Lozza will make me an Institute Special Pipe for it, but that can wait until I've sorted out the gearbox and have a less rattly top end on it!

I owe Scott W (Mr VMXPlastics) a huge thank-you for helping me out with parts - including one of his new rear guards which looks far better than the bent POS that's in the photos.
I also owe Marty from Wrights Motorcycles a huge thank you for helping me out with shock regassing, oils and all of the generic stuff like levers and kill-switch.
I reckon I've got a bit over $550 tied up in it: $150ish for the bike, a hundred or so on paints and oils, $50 on the 250 front end, $40 for the late model footpegs, and the rest with Messers Wilson and Wright.
And to be fair, I've 'borrowed' the bars and chain from my DT125 race bike, so $700 will be a more realistic figure once those parts are replaced.

very cool Nathan!
it always amazes me how you manage to do these things on a budget and still turn out something that looks the goods.
go hard & stick it to the 250 brigade!

ah, another bitsa budget bike  :) she looks good Nathan and I'd reckon a whole heap of fun to ride. pre '78 too which is even better.  I wish the C models RM were a flow on and fell back into pre'78 also as I'd go a PE175 in an RM frame anyday if it were practicle in terms of eligability :-\ They are way closer to the 76/77 models than the the 79/80 which were a completely different thing..whine whine snivel snivel :P looks good though and you've saved another bike that never was..well it was but not really  ;)

Hi Nathan,
I too had the same idea when I first got into Viper. Not being able to find or afford a 250 I built a YZ175 but I took the easy way though and ran an IT175E engine in my YZ125E frame.
Use to struggle off the line (Lack of power) but made up for it round the track in handlabilty.
It also didnt take as much out of me as the 250 does.
Great work.

There was a YZ175C, I think it was the only run though.

Will catch up with you soon.

Beer, drugs (Prescription kind) blah blah blah!

PS It was good to catch up with a few of the boys at Ravenswood and Blue Rock now looks in doubt for me.
At this rate I dont think the old girls are going to get a run this year. Damn it.

Come on mate... You can do it!
Get them Yz's out and stretch there legs.. not the frames..
If not you will just have to keep training for the 09 season.
09 should be a bumper season, cant wait!  hopefully we will be back at monza and the weather is great!

Unfortunately I promised Daryl we would do all the Clubbies together and that clashes with the possible date change to the 17th plus our vice president, (Ex president) Franz Van der Bomm, has his 60th the night before. I missed his testimonial a couple of years back as I was away at a Viper event. He has since been struck down with Motor Neurone Disease. It is a horrible disease, the mind is still sharp as a tack but the body refuses to co-operate. I wont be missing that.

The 28th of Sept clashes too so it looks like Oct 26th is my only chance if that is the day they pick otherwise it will be a 09 comeback.

Nathan, I've got a garage full of bits of bikes, I think you need a holiday over here and if you feel the need to build another bike........... ;)  ;D  ;D
We have just the class for that bike to race in. Its called Evolites and its for 175/185 2 stokes and up to 250 4 strokes. You would have a ball on your YZ175.
Great job Nathan .

Thanks for the kind words.  :) Yes, I hope to have it at the next ACT HEAVEN round.

Been thinking a bit more about how much it owes me.
The more think about it, the more comfortable I am with the $700 figure - but I also think that it might be a bit misleading....
A lot of stuff came from my big pile of bits - and while it costs me nothing to drag something from the shed, those bits cost me something, somewhere along the line.

DJ, yeah, that Unzed trip is still on the cards - it you're still prepared to have all three of us... Sometime in the next 23 months, while Thomas can still fly for free...

Neale, I still owe you money! Send me your account details!

Vandy, haven't forgotten about your MX barrel... Just haven't picked it up yet!

Nathan, you Anna and Thomas are most welcome, the offer is always open.
I understand what you mean about the bike costing $700, but as you say, when you start to add up the parts you already have and the cost of them it can alter things a bit. I know, I found that out when I built the bike I had at CD5. But still Nathan, its a cool bike and even if you doubled the cost its still a cheap bike for VMX racing, and this day and age $1500 doesnt go far.
You had better come over for the 16 August, we are running our event "The Masters of Motocross" and its free entry for Aussies.

It will "fit" but the squish domes are different diameters (56mm versus 66mm) it's for a 175 only

No, it does not.
The X to D was where they changed - to D has short 10mm studs that are spaced further apart (to give the transfers more room).
For any given year, the 125s and the 175s share the same stud spacing.

E74, thanks but not in my current financial state.

Doesnt an IT175 head have a 4 stud pattern until 1980 when it changed to a 5 stud pattern and it wasnt until 1984 when the IT200cc came out with a 6 stud pattern?

good pick Dj,
all this 175 talk has me a little bluffed but either way, $175 for a DG head is a good price me thinks.

From 1977 onward, the DT and IT175s went to 6-stud heads, even though the 125s stayed with 4-studs.

From 1980, it got more confusing: The new style motors (IT175, YZ125, and later YZ100) with the chain on the right all got 5-stud heads, regardless of capacity, while the old style motors kept whatever they had.

Nathan,

I fairly sure you'll find that the YZ175C barrell does not fit the YZ125C/X bottom end. Thats when the studs were 1st widened for the larger transfer ports, at least according to the magazines of the day. They may well have been widened again for the IT175D. I think the YZ175C still used thro-studs to the head.

Hmmm, interesting.
Given the rarity of the YZ125C in this country, its probably academic, but for the sake of accuracy, I'm more than happy to be corrected.

The 175C does run the "all the way through" head/barrel studs.
