I picked up this cherry '68 Ford Ranchero today. It's a matching number 302/C4 auto/9", power steer, rare factory aircon, disc brake model. Original factory cherry red paint, original interior, straight as a gunbarrel with only a tiny bit of rust in the tray. It's got MDS CDI ignition, ceramic coated extractors, hi rise Weiand inlet manifold with a 600 Edelbrock carby, 2.5" stainless steel dual pipes, lowered 2 " with drop spindles on the front and Bilstein shocks all round. It's got 14" Mustang wheels in the photos but the car comes with 15x8 Cragar wheels. The seller ran over a piece of steel on the freeway and wrecked two tyres so the wheels and new tyres will be on it when I pick it up late this week. The paint's in good nick but for a faded bonnet and roof which I think adds patina. Three bikes will fit in the back with the gate up which was why I picked an American ute over an Aussie one. It should look good with some old VMX tackle in the back ;D

Yes but an Aussie ute will fit into the modern shopping mall parking bays (just)
Cool rig

I saw a Ranchero in Melbourne a month or so ago, didn't expect to see another so soon. Very nice Firko.

very nice Mark

Very nice car Firko will look great with any old bike in the back for sure.
-
A big yes to that pick-up pick up Firko :D

I don't particularly like the wheels that come with the car, 1990's style Cragar Pro Star drag race wheels (bottom photo). Like on my bikes I prefer to use period stuff on my cars so I've just bought this set of 7"x15 front/8.5"x15 rear American Racing 'Daisy' wheels.

Any big Aussie ute is cool but that one Firko is off the scale. It's uber cool.
-
The big ute will look great with the American Racers on it Mark. Is it going to wear the dreaded, "sideways any time" BF Goodrich's as well?

How do you get on with left hand Drive Firko just rite to bring all
your bikes to Broadford at Easter.

Not required to be converted now due to age of vehicle. ;)
-
Any car over 25 years doesn't need to be converted. Yeah Tim, I'll probably bring it to Broadford all things being OK.
Left hand drive isn't the problem you'd think Stiggy. It took me about 2 minutes of driving for the left and right sides of my brain to adjust to everything being the opposite to what I'm used to.
The only real difficulty is in not having a clear view when passing but that can be solved by dropping back a little to get a broader perspective of whats coming the other way and to see what gaps are available in front of whatever you're passing. Anyone who's driven an LHD rental car in the USA or Europe will tell you that it's a simple transformation.

I just have two words for you Firko. El Camino ;D
Nice set of "Flower Mags"!

I gave up waiting for you to weaken and sell me your Chevy Jay ;D. In retrospect I don't think I could afford the fuel bill on the 454! Yeah, I don't like those Cragar Pro Star drag style wheels, when I first saw the Ranchero it had cool period Cragar S/S wheels but he swapped them over to his '65 Mustang and I got the Pro Stars. I've liked American Daisy wheels since I had them on my 64 Nova SS in the old days and that set came up for the right price so I had to buy them. I reckon they'll suit the car perfectly.

will look good parked next to my 1959 el camino firko!!! 8) 8)

You've got a '59 El Camino Russell? I came close to buying one about 10 years ago with a 400 small block and turbo 400. I was talked out of buying it by my mate and have bloody regretted it ever since. That's my favourite El Camino. You could land a helicopter in the back of a '59

It's scary close to the one I almost bought Rusty. It was painted purple with a blue ghost flame job (which would have been gone within a week of me buying it!) and it had Boyd Coddington wheels that also would have got the flick. It also had the 400/400/9" combo so I wonder if it's the same car? I like the Chevy Rallye wheels on yours and you've given me an idea about repurposing the Mexican blanket that's on my bed as we speak. You and I have very similar tastes in wheeled vehicles my friend!
-
I always liked the tray detail on those camino's
-
That is one sweet lookin bike transporter! You don't see them every day.....

This is what I originally wanted, a '72 El Camino SS 454. back in my California days a good mate had an identical car to the one in the photo and I often rode in and occasionally drove it and loved the power of the LS7 454 and clunky Muncie 4 speed. I was considering buying one from the USA and even tried to gently push Tahitian Red to sell his, unfortunately with no result ::). Now by fate (or luck), I've become a Ranchero owner despite being a lifelong GM and Mopar guy. I'd never really taken much notice of the Rancheros but now I've got mine I'm pretty pleased I made the cross over. If I'd bought a big block El Camino it would have become a bit like my Jag, an occasional Sunday cruiser due to the petrol sucking big block engine milking my self funded pension. The little 302 in the Ranchero sounds tough without having the huge thirst and parts are available at Supercheap.

Reckon your one looks much better Mark!
cheers

despite being a lifelong GM and Mopar guy.
I knew there something I liked about you. ;D
If I were buying another Chevelle/El Camino I would get one with a 350. My favorite car was my Lime Green '70 Challenger 340 w/ a pistol grip 4 speed. Easy and fun to drive without busting the bank.
;)
-
Very nice ute Firko, i do like the look of the faded paint, there are a few old american pickup's etc just around the corner from work at Sutto's classic restorations that are actually getting painted like that.
cheers Dale.
P.S. will make a very nice bike hauler.

Hows this '66 Ranchero?....the front clip is exactly the same as our '68 XT Falcon. The wheelbase is longer, on the Fairlane/Torino pan making for the bigger tray. I think the XT front bodywork will fit mine....not that I'm considering it for one moment. Here's a comparo to the Aussie XT Falcon ute.

This is the 67 Ranchero, this time with a very similar but not identical front to our ZC/ZD Fairlane, once again pretty much the same as my '69 from the firewall back.

all our local cars were heavily influenced by chev and ford, they used to rotate their design boys out here for a bit of experience. it wasn't until the 70's that gmh and ford aus got clear of the heavy influence but you can still see it in the Q's and xd's etc
-
I reckon the '68 Failane was the goods!
pancho.

Dig that '66 Ranchero.....that car might even coax me into a ford :o XT GT bonnet scoop, GT grille and there you have an XT GT ute. BEWDIFUL mate
