OK, Mark could you flick me an email to [email protected] cos I've lost all me email addresses when me computer shit itself, got a late model replacement from a hock shop, I will email you a copy of the ad but it did come from the JAP engine facebook page, google that and have a look, some good stuff on there from time to time.
Grahame, the ad comes from circa 1975/6, as far as I can tell, I have a copy of Kevin McDonalds advert for the 4V JAP as well.
KB thanks for the pix, great stuff, ta
KDX there's a pic of Alf's JAP drag bike on the forum somewhere, I do have a pic of it on me spare hard drive , will look it up.
Now, this pic has had a run on the forum before, but it wont hurt to put it up again, IMHO the best JAP engined longtracker I've seen, plus it's probably the last JAP engine modei, note that there's no mag drive cover.

Pure horn, Al. 22" rear, 2 speed box, probably interspan ignition, flat slide Mikuni, reverse cone megaphone and topped off by the best looking 500 single (dirt) ever, IMHO. Drool, drool.

a few years ago I went to a blokes house to do a magazine story on his green frame Ducati. While there I checked out his collection of bikes which featured a number of important GP road racing bikes including a new, unridden TZ750e, a few Brit motocross bikes and much more quality stuff. My favourite was a two stroke twin Scott speedway bike. It was one of the coolest bikes I've ever seen.

A mate has a four valve JAP (not Jonesy) that will hopefully be coming out to play in a Hagon frame next year.

Now wouldn't the Scott be great to hear at full noise lapping the Headquarters !!, Me Dad has a thing about Scotts, a Flying Squirrel I think.

Foss, that 4v JAP Longtracker is bloody beautiful. I reckon that the
carby is an AMAL Concentric MK2 40mm. What do you think? I'm sure we're
seeing the same thing here.
cheers Mark
-
Yeah, Mark it's a MK 2 concentric alright, a bloody big one too, Doncha reckon Alvin would like the Scott ??, big two stroke an' the colour ??
Foss
-
Yeah Foss, Alvin will get movement when he sees the Scott. It sure is a cool lookin' bike.
-
I've got a 1926 Flying Squirrel. It has telescopic forks like the speedway one but extra bracing on the front. Also has a full frame with the tank being the top tube of the frame. 3 speed gearbox.
I did have a pre war JAP, but thought I would never get to use it so sold it about 10 years ago. My first introduction to early speedway stuff was firing up an early 30's 4 valve Rudge in a cobblestone lane way in Geelong. I was 18 and had only really raced MX. It was an eye opener how hard this very old bike went. It made me think about the old stuff in a new light.
Cheers, Grahame
-
It's coincidence that you mention a Rudge Speedway bike, Grahame, ( I've seen and heard a video of a Rudge skidder being fired up, a really rorty sound !!)
Here's a pic , from the JAP engine page, courtesy of Bennie, Dutch on this forum , of a Jap fitted with, in some's opinion, a Rudge 4V head.
Check out the 2 into 1 exhaust.
Is there any more info on this engine , Dutch ?

Oh, and while you're at it, have a look at this link, Speedway, Longtrack, MX Sidecars, Dragbikes, road racers, all Wessie powered

That JAP engine is made by German tuner Siegfried Priehs from Rodenkirchen.
Yes the JAP engine is fitted with a Rudge 4V head, and the bike was very succesfull ridden by Rider Hans von Weyhe in the early seventies.
Tuner Priehs also made later his own speedway / engines (a Dohc 4V and a Sohc 4V) under the name SPR.
-
Here some extra info on that Dohc 4V grasstracker,
This frame is made by KeithJarvis (England)
The counter-shaft and the swinging-arm are co-located, so there is constant chain tension.
-
Thanks for the info, Dutch,

The BLACK ERNA V twin Weslake,..... 1000 cc, 120 HP, 0 to 170 kph in 6/7 sec :o
I don't think that I would like to pilot that missile.

Yep, that would tend to pucker the orifice somewhat , wouldn't it ??

Here's another from Dutch on The JAP engine page

This from Dutch
Here are 2 pics from the Australian HIGGS Jap.
The engine is a Jap bottomhalf, but on top a modified Neil Street SR4 Valve head. Note that there is NO camchain but the cams are beveldriven.
Also interesting the fuel injector, and the frame is platinum plated. Is there more information from this HIGGS engine?
I've only posted 1 pic, but aren't Aussies and Speedway engine builders an ingenious lot, eh ?

<but aren't Aussies and Speedway engine builders an ingenious lot, eh>
Here are some more Aussie (Jawa) engines but what are they.
Take a look at this video and there you see 3 different Jawa 4 Valve conversion from Mauger - Crump and? The question is what 4V conversion are these, SERCO? SR4? or IVAN TIGHE.

What a great bit of video, Dutch !!
Unfortunately I can't help much except to say that Ivan's bike, the first one shown, appears to be a version of the Neil Street/ Ivan Tighe OHC 4V conversion, very similar to the one I saw at in the pits at Liverpool Speedway ridden by Phil Crump. Firko ??

That's what it looks like to me too Foss. I always thought Ivan only rode straight Jawas not conversions but perhaps he rode the Street/Serco in that interim period prior to the 4v Jawa but one would assume that as Jawa's #1 works rider, Ivan would be aboard an 894 twin cammer in 1976.
-
I don't think that there was twin cam speedway 894 bike in 1976. The first time that Ivan Mauger used a 894 Jawa was in the longtrack final 12-9-1976 in Marianske Lazne (CZ) the 894 speedwaybike came later (think early 1977)
Any ideas about that Billy Sanders Dohc 4V conversion (with the black cover) in the video.
