Have a modified 490 torque arm on mine, can't see me putting the original back on as the spherical bearing is unobtainable for the 465
-
Ok that makes sense, this one is a home job...
Ill head down that path ,,,thanks mate... ;)
-
If you want some details of what I did just ask me, not sure what 490 arm I used but any year should be fine you need to shorten it anyway
-
That would be great Tony !
Im onto a airbox (looks like its been shot by a 12guage) lol,
The rear backing plate has the eyelet broken off where the control arm attaches, fabrication time by the looks...

these are the parts I have thus far :)

I'll take some photos of the original & new torque arm after I've won the last round of our clubs trials champs tomorrow & have washed the bike, will be easiest time to get the bikes out.
I cut the end with the spherical bearing off the 490 torque arm & machined up a new 1 that was same basic size as the original but left the hole at 21.5mm from memory, the end was made to be fitted up inside the arm which is hollow & the arm was shortened to get the centre distances the same as on the 465.
I welded in the new eye then reamed it out to 22mm to fit the bearing. Came out looking factory made & has the advantage of having a bearing that is easily gotten from any bearing supplier. The original spacers are used with O-rings used for sealing
Is the airbox you're looking a G or H, there is a fairly decent H model airbox listed in the states at the moment which may be the 1 you're talking about, I bought 1 that had slots cut in the side which I had cut out & a new section welded in, my original had a repaired airboot & I wanted a good boot so this worked out quite well

Same seller also has the 465 torque arm for $20us & a hub & brake plate as well, I have to look via the UK site as no used parts show up for me anymore on the US site even if I'm not signed in
-
Here is a thorough rebuild of a 465, damn good read and lots of detail including how to convert a 490 torque to fit a 465 ;)
I have also put it all into a word document, much easier to read and without all the irrelevant bits. PM me if you want me to email it to you.

Gday i used a torque arm off a 84 125 and does the job well they even look a bit better got it from wreckers for $30
-
Thanks Tony , I`d be interested in a look for sure mate ..& yes that one of the airboxes im checking out , cheers ;)
I sent you a pm Bishboy , sound like a intresting read for sure mate , thankyou...
And thankyou Jason for the heads up , any pics mate ? regards Glen...
Ok so I stripped the motor down "head, clutch, stator" only & it has all new seal`s & everything is tight , upon pulling the flywheel off there was no woodruff key so I pulled the flywheel off another 3R5 bottom end to find the woodruff flopping around inside the keyway , in my opinion it has to be to small ? or is this a Yamaha thing ?
Also the original bike(YZ465) in discussion has a IT465 (Im guessing) stator , im just wondering because theres such a mixed bag of parts does the IT465 stator require the IT465 flywheel & the same goes for the YZ ?
regards Glen .
-
:) I changed the reeds & kicker spring & bars , getting a key for the flywheel......things are looking up ;)
-
I checked the flywheel part # is same on IT250K / YZ465 /IT465
-
Thanks for that, the backing plate has 2 locations for the pick up , so wasn't real sure....
Im guessing as I go at the moment ;)

Wow thanks mate , I appreciate the info :D
At the moment Im trying to get it all together & work from there..Did the static timing today , still no W-key so I went fishing in the other shed & found one off a mx80 that worked for that....
Swing arm came apart well , not so well the lower shock mount,,,ill get it ! ;)
-
Flywheel key is common to pretty much all yamahas from then on, check out this list
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-90280-03017-00.html
My lower shock mount has some play in it, if I grab the rear wheel there is movement inside the mount. From what I've seen I'll have to get a new pin made up & possibly new sleeves in the swingarm.
The all balls/moose racing kit for the 465 fits well apart from the seals in the covers which are too big, I ended up reusing mine & have picked up a pair of the correct ones for when I paint the frame over the break in the series here
If you need to heat the pin etc up to get it out the bush for the shock does show up on ebay & is listed as being available as well as the thrust washers, the pin isn't though
-
I have a length of 1/2 inch stainless rod ,I cut a piece long enough to put holes in the ends for a split pin, then with a good battery drill ,drill a 1/2 inch hole through lower shock mount and swing arm (this can be done on the bike)with cutting compound.
I have done this to my yz d and yz h with good results
cheers Arno
-
Thanks guys ,
I have the 250 roller & its swing arm pivot points are good & free , however Im reluctant to use the 250 stuff unless I really need to, I must say im much more at home on a Suzuki 8)
I need to get some pics up but I think I need a new computer & haven't had much luck uploading :(
I have an issue with the rear side of the main down tube on the 465 frame,..A couple of inches from the bottom of the top gusset , the structural re-enforcing has been removed all the way down the main down tube except the mount for the shock reservoir , its been left in tact,,,,,the thing that has me baffled is that its a neat job ,,,,,if this makes sense was it a frame flex mod or for a different expansion chamber ???
ps I can email pics
glen ;)
-
Airboxed off the list.....missing the filter cover , but Ill cross that bridge when I get the box...
Pulled the clutch back off after reading more about these bikes, to find.......yes the pressed on gear behind the clutch basket hass dislodged itself ,,,, I have another one ill check today if its ok ,,,can the pinion gear be welded in place or should I address the issue with a later model 490 clutch & crank gear ? Thoughts please :)
regards glen.
-
I have had them repaired .he welded three spots on the high side of gear tooth , after first cleaning up the damaged part and pressing back on flush with good results ,you have to check inner sleeve as welding made them tight, he also fixed
cheers Arno 72
-
That's the go,,,uni-filter bulk order ;)
Well the other clutch is worse..Looks like ill get a good one out of it all ,,,,,if I weld the basket...
-
You can buy new billet clutch baskets from the UK. Check the older VMX mags for the guy
I have one and its grouse
-
Thanks Ted,,,,lovely job on the yz by the way!
That sounds promising, I'll look into it, I'd prefer to keep the original box if I can...both kicker shafts have been repaired aswel which doesn't surprise me,,,
I'm enjoying it regardless.
-
Wanted some thoughts on the inner clutch bearing,,inparticular the bearing collar,,,I have one that's usable but the other has signs of being to hot,,,my question is can or has anyone drilled a hole in theirs or can a later model sleeve be used??
Ps, I Realize most of you guys have answered these questions before, on top of already putting the hard yards in!!!
So I appreciate any & all advice, cheers.
-
both kicker shafts have been repaired as well which doesn't surprise me,,,
The fix for that is to throw them over your left shoulder and get one from a K series. YZ250K replaces YZ250H. I think 250 and 465 have the same kicker shafts, but worth checking before you rush offto EBay :-\. Apparently you will never break that one. It's manufactured differently.
-
Copy that YZ250H,,,,going over back shoulder now :)
-
Ok.....just got off the phone [Wreckers] & the 1st chap says the 81 airbox won't fit the 80 , to which I agreed, then proceeded to cross reference the two ,as you guys know different parts numbers, I also read [thanks to this forum] that the 81 is slightly bigger.
Then 5 min later they call back saying the 81 will fit the 80?????
Wondering if I should buy or not, mine is the 1980 frame... ???
-
Bought the air box,,,, they were nice guy ;D
-
the YZ250K kickstart will interchange with the earlier YZ250/465/490's, but the YZ250K kickstart is angled forward, very short and hit's the foot peg earlier.
the best kickstarter to use is the 1981/82 IT250 H/J version, these have a dogleg which allows the kickstarter more than half a turn before hitting the footpeg. i used one on my YZ465/490 engine, basically you get 2 sparks per full kick which makes starting the bigger engine a lot easier. these kickstarters are obsolete but can be found, be prepared to pay a fair bit more for a good one though...
-
Thanks Zakk ;)
-
Oh Crap, I thought he was talking about the kickstart shaft being broken not the kick lever. Sorry. I still use the H kick lever. It works well (if you are able to get your right knee.
Best go and retrieve that lever you tossed over your shoulder :o
-
LOL , I actually as the shaft not the kicker ;)
So to reiterate,,,yz250H shaft & kicker ?
or yz250H shaft , it490 kicker ?
Having a tuff time finding a billet clutch basket , patience will win out I guess..
If anyone has a complete 83-85 yz490 clutch with crank gear I`d be very keen ;)

YZ250K shaft with YZ250/465 kick lever combination works very well for me. If you are starting it without something to stand on you will need to practice putiing your right knee under your right armpit :o :o
Glad we got that sorted out ???

Hehe ;) cheers mate...
