Has anyone got any tips on re-painting the inlaid 'Montesa' name on the fibreglass tanks?
I'm repairing one and was wondering any tips for best results? Hand paint by brush or mask up and spray?
-
One way to do it would be to after spraying the tank red, use an airbrush and spray into the inset
letters and then lightly wet sand the overspray, then shoot clear over the whole tank.
Originally, the lettering was hand painted over the gelcoat and then the whole tank cleared.

Thats an idea; I'm been thinking about doing/learning a little airbrushing and I saw an airbrushing kit for about $40 down at the Autoshop the other day. Just noted it; didn't pick it up and suss it for quality or anything. Now ya got me thinking ;D.
Thanks guys. It's always worth the ask an'it 8).

Just repainted my VB tank, got the original paint matched, but ended up a bit too orange, have to do for a while though. What is the correct colour for the tank & for the lettering(looks like a pearl colour, but may be just faded), and where do you get it?

The lettering on my tank is a dark gold. It is what i would consider as a pretty standard gold paint with that metal flake look which might be what you describe as 'pearl'.
I won't fuss too much, there's only a handfull of Monties out there for your bike to be compared to and Monty owners are so please to see a fellow sufferer they won't give you a hard time ;D.
'Montesa Police' is an oxymoron ;D

Here's a better pixie 8)

I'm fooling the system by posting twice - this file is 112kb and the system only allows 128kb but rejected.

Graeme do you know what the name of the Red you used? as i still need to paint the on the VR. I've got a sign writer(old school mate)lined up to do the "MONTESA" freehand with a brush .

None of those pixies are mine ::) worst luck :P. I've pinched a few from the internet, typically ebay, and keep as a reference to help in the resto. I'm currently in the process of painting mine, rub down and spray putty stage. I'm not gonna fuss too much, I'll look around for a car colour that approximates and away I'll go 8).
Mine is intended as a 'close to original' presentable period race bike rather than a showroom NOS resto or an over-blinged childhood wet dream ;).

Code 75 1978
Red Lucite Acrylic Lacquer (Dupont)
---------------------------------
PPG Delstar Acrylic Enamel
DAR 72155 SC
Fleet Bright Red
--------------------------------
Either of these two colours look correct.
I would suggest using the lacquer, wet sanding, doing the letters and
then clear coating.

I'll give ya $50 for Jared ;D.
Hmmmm, pretty. 8)

I'm not for sale! at least not for $50....
-
I think a corection is necesary here......to save both of our reputations :D
Correction;
I'll give ya $50 for it Jared .
;D
-
Thanks for that Jared,I will send you an email soon about the other parts Ill need.
It sounds like my tank is at about the same stage as yours Graeme, I'm not that fussy about the colour, but if someone points you in the right direction its that bit easier!
-
Where on the bike do the 360 decal fit?
-
I'm convinced I'm must be living in the sticks up here! I visited the only local Dupont automotive paint experts with your colour suggestions, Jared. No go with the PPG Delstar, no info. Couldn't identify Dupont code 75 1978 red lucite acrylic lacquer, must be too old!
Managed to drag out sample colour cards for more modern motorcycles, but not sure if they kept the mixing information for those colours. The guy was really trying to help, though, and didn't give up.
Finally found one which looks real close for the VB. It's an Aprilia colour, Rosso/2, and may just do the trick - If they can find the formula.

My sugestions having roll painted a car...YES Painted a car with a roller cost 374 dollars and came up a treat, took down to the local panel shop when I had finshed to see if they could pick how I painted it and they couldn't at all as it was smooth and shiny. If I was going to paint a tank and make it look like it was not hand painted I would thin the paint out like water and use acetone as the thinner(this is how I did the car) the purpose of doing this is that axetone evop. quicker than thinners so it will pool out in the embossed part on the tank and then stay there with in minutes it would be almost like a filler mix of color and would come up a treat. You all probly think I mad so I fouind US link of a guy who has done a car in the same fashion as what I did. Have a look.

We are just about to give a valiant the royal treatment as it is my second car I feel it will be heaps better.
Air brushing is good but it has to go on in certain fashion otherwise you will get like tone diffrences in your paint. Masking is ok but you will still end up with sharp edges unless you are a masking wiz. or have time afterwards to fix it.
I don't know but that would be my answer.

Fantastic. I love it ;D :D ;).
I haven't gotten to the lettering yet, probably be hand/brushed and spray clear coated.
-
The Montesa logo stickers on my Cota have metalflake in 'em. I'd guess aftermarket but the look cool.
-
Just got my tank back from the brother in law (retired automotive spray painter). He did the tank a Mazda red, masked & sprayed the gold lettering, then 2 coats of clear. Looks great. No decals yet. I had a set ordered from the US at AMS Racing, but put that on hold when the dollar dived. When I save up enough sheckles from my pension, he will fit them & clear 2 more coats. The gold looks much better sprayed than when I hand painted the letters last time.

How did I know you were going to say that?
I took a photo, but I haven't worked out yet how to get it below 633kb.

Have you got the program Paint or Paintshop or sim?

Try this one.

Didn't the V75 have a cast alloy finish? My VR did. Though I've seen photos of them polished.

sorry, Ross, I meant the fork legs.
